KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;1 Therefore, holy "brothers," sharing in a heavenly calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.2 who was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was "faithful in (all) his house."
For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.3 But he is worthy of more "glory" than Moses, as the founder of a house has more "honor" than the house itself.
For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.4 Every house is founded by someone, but the founder of all is God.
And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;5 Moses was "faithful in all his house" as a "servant" to testify to what would be spoken,
But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.6 but Christ was faithful as a son placed over his house. We are his house, if (only) we hold fast to our confidence and pride in our hope.
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,7 Therefore, as the holy Spirit says: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice,
Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:8 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion in the day of testing in the desert,
When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.9 where your ancestors tested and tried me and saw my works
Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.10 for forty years. Because of this I was provoked with that generation and I said, "They have always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways."
So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)11 As I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest."'"
Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.12 Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God.
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.13 Encourage yourselves daily while it is still "today," so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin.
For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;14 We have become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end,
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.15 for it is said: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice: 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion.'"
For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.16 Who were those who rebelled when they heard? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt under Moses?
But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?17 With whom was he "provoked for forty years"? Was it not those who had sinned, whose corpses fell in the desert?
And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?18 And to whom did he "swear that they should not enter into his rest," if not to those who were disobedient?
So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.19 And we see that they could not enter for lack of faith.
