KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was drawing near,
And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.2 and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.3 Then Satan entered into Judas, the one surnamed Iscariot, who was counted among the Twelve,
And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.4 and he went to the chief priests and temple guards to discuss a plan for handing him over to them.
And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.5 They were pleased and agreed to pay him money.
And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.6 He accepted their offer and sought a favorable opportunity to hand him over to them in the absence of a crowd.
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.7 When the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread arrived, the day for sacrificing the Passover lamb,
And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.8 he sent out Peter and John, instructing them, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?9 They asked him, "Where do you want us to make the preparations?"
And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.10 And he answered them, "When you go into the city, a man will meet you carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house that he enters
And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?11 and say to the master of the house, 'The teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.12 He will show you a large upper room that is furnished. Make the preparations there."
And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.13 Then they went off and found everything exactly as he had told them, and there they prepared the Passover.
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.14 When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles.
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.16 for, I tell you, I shall not eat it (again) until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:17 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves;
For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.18 for I tell you (that) from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.19 Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."
Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.
But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.21 "And yet behold, the hand of the one who is to betray me is with me on the table;
And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!22 for the Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed."
And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.23 And they began to debate among themselves who among them would do such a deed.
And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.24 Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest.
And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.25 He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as 'Benefactors';
But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.26 but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.27 For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves.
Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.28 It is you who have stood by me in my trials;
And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;29 and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me,
That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:31 "Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat,
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.32 but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers."
And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.33 He said to him, "Lord, I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you."
And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.34 But he replied, "I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me."
And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.35 He said to them, "When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?" "No, nothing," they replied.
Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.36 He said to them, "But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.
For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.37 For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, 'He was counted among the wicked'; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment."
And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.38 Then they said, "Lord, look, there are two swords here." But he replied, "It is enough!"
And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.39 Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.40 When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test."
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,41 After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed,
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done."
And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.43 (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.44 He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.)
And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,45 When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief.
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.46 He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test."
And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.47 While he was still speaking, a crowd approached and in front was one of the Twelve, a man named Judas. He went up to Jesus to kiss him.
But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?48 Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?49 His disciples realized what was about to happen, and they asked, "Lord, shall we strike with a sword?"
And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.51 But Jesus said in reply, "Stop, no more of this!" Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.53 Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness."
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.54 After arresting him they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest; Peter was following at a distance.
And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.55 They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them.
But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.56 When a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently at him and said, "This man too was with him."
And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.57 But he denied it saying, "Woman, I do not know him."
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.58 A short while later someone else saw him and said, "You too are one of them"; but Peter answered, "My friend, I am not."
And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.59 About an hour later, still another insisted, "Assuredly, this man too was with him, for he also is a Galilean."
And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.60 But Peter said, "My friend, I do not know what you are talking about." Just as he was saying this, the cock crowed,
And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.61 and the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times."
And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.62 He went out and began to weep bitterly.
And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.63 The men who held Jesus in custody were ridiculing and beating him.
And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?64 They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?"
And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.65 And they reviled him in saying many other things against him.
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,66 When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin.
Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:67 They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us," but he replied to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,
And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.68 and if I question, you will not respond.
Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.69 But from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."
Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied to them, "You say that I am."
And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.71 Then they said, "What further need have we for testimony? We have heard it from his own mouth."
