1 Aleph. I am the man that see my poverty by the rod of his indignation.	1 Ich bin der Mann, der Leid erlebt hat durch die Rute seines Grimms.
2 Aleph. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, and not into light.	2 Er hat mich getrieben und gedrängt in Finsternis, nicht ins Licht.
3 Aleph. Only against me he hath turned, and turned again his hand all the day.	3 Täglich von neuem kehrt er die Hand nur gegen mich.
4 Beth. My skin and my flesh he hath made old, he hath broken my bones.	4 Er zehrte aus mein Fleisch und meine Haut, zerbrach meine Glieder,
5 Beth. He hath built round about me, and he hath compassed me with gall and labour.	5 umbaute und umschloss mich mit Gift und Erschöpfung.
6 Beth. He hath set me in dark places as those that are dead for ever.	6 Im Finstern ließ er mich wohnen wie längst Verstorbene.
7 Ghimel. He hath built against me round about, that I may not get out: he hath made my fetters heavy.	7 Er hat mich ummauert, ich kann nicht entrinnen. Er hat mich in schwere Fesseln gelegt.
8 Ghimel. Yea, and when I cry, and entreat, he hath shut out my prayer.	8 Wenn ich auch schrie und flehte, er blieb stumm bei meinem Gebet.
9 Ghimel. He hath shut up my ways with square stones, he hath turned my paths upside down.	9 Mit Quadern hat er mir den Weg verriegelt, meine Pfade irregeleitet.
10 Daleth. He is become to me as a bear lying in wait: as a lion in secret places.	10 Ein lauernder Bär war er mir, ein Löwe im Versteck.
11 Daleth. He hath turned aside my paths, and hath broken me in pieces, he hath made me desolate.	11 Er hat mich vom Weg vertrieben, mich zerfleischt und zerrissen.
12 Daleth. He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for his arrows.	12 Er spannte den Bogen und stellte mich hin als Ziel für den Pfeil.
13 He. He hath shot into my reins the daughters of his quiver.	13 In die Nieren ließ er mir dringen die Geschosse seines Köchers.
14 He. I am made a derision to all my people, their song all the day long.	14 Ein Gelächter war ich all meinem Volk, ihr Spottlied den ganzen Tag.
15 He. He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath inebriated me with wormwood.	15 Er speiste mich mit bitterer Kost und tränkte mich mit Wermut.
16 Vau. And he hath broken my teeth one by one, he hath fed me with ashes.	16 Meine Zähne ließ er auf Kiesel beißen, er drückte mich in den Staub.
17 Vau. And my soul is removed far off from peace, I have forgotten good things.	17 Du hast mich aus dem Frieden hinausgestoßen; ich habe vergessen, was Glück ist.
18 Vau. And I said: My end and my hope is perished from the Lord.	18 Ich sprach: Dahin ist mein Glanz und mein Vertrauen auf den Herrn.
19 Zain. Remember my poverty, and transgression, the wormwood, and the gall.	19 An meine Not und Unrast denken ist Wermut und Gift.
20 Zain. I will be mindful and remember, and my soul shall languish within me.	20 Immer denkt meine Seele daran und ist betrübt in mir.
21 Zain. These things I shall think over in my heart, therefore will I hope.	21 Das will ich mir zu Herzen nehmen, darauf darf ich harren:
22 Heth. The mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed: because his commiserations have not failed.	22 Die Huld des Herrn ist nicht erschöpft, sein Erbarmen ist nicht zu Ende.
23 Heth. They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness.	23 Neu ist es an jedem Morgen; groß ist deine Treue.
24 Heth. The Lord is my portion, said my soul: therefore will I wait for him.	24 Mein Anteil ist der Herr, sagt meine Seele, darum harre ich auf ihn.
25 Teth. The Lord is good to them that hope in him, to the soul that seeketh him.	25 Gut ist der Herr zu dem, der auf ihn hofft, zur Seele, die ihn sucht.
26 Teth. It is good to wait with silence for the salvation of God.	26 Gut ist es, schweigend zu harren auf die Hilfe des Herrn.
27 Teth. It is good for a man, when he hath borne the yoke from his youth.	27 Gut ist es für den Mann, ein Joch zu tragen in der Jugend.
28 Jod. He shall sit solitary, and hold his peace: because he hath taken it up upon himself.	28 Er sitze einsam und schweige, wenn der Herr es ihm auflegt.
29 Jod. He shall put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope.	29 Er beuge in den Staub seinen Mund; vielleicht ist noch Hoffnung.
30 Jod. He shall give his cheek to him that striketh him, he shall be filled with reproaches.	30 Er biete die Wange dem, der ihn schlägt, und lasse sich sättigen mit Schmach.
31 Caph. For the Lord will not cast off for ever.	31 Denn nicht für immer verwirft der Herr.
32 Caph. For if he hath cast off, he will also have mercy, according to the multitude of his mercies.	32 Hat er betrübt, erbarmt er sich auch wieder nach seiner großen Huld.
33 Caph. For he hath not willingly afflicted, nor cast off the children of men.	33 Denn nicht freudigen Herzens plagt und betrübt er die Menschen.
34 Lamed. To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the land,	34 Dass man mit Füßen tritt alle Gefangenen des Landes,
35 Lamed. To turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the most High,	35 dass man das Recht des Mannes beugt vor dem Antlitz des Höchsten,
36 Lamed. To destroy a man wrongfully in his judgment, the Lord hath not approved.	36 dass man im Rechtsstreit den Menschen bedrückt, sollte der Herr das nicht sehen?
37 Mem. Who is he that hath commanded a thing to be done, when the Lord commandeth it not?	37 Wer hat gesprochen und es geschah? Hat nicht der Herr es geboten?
38 Mem. Shall not both evil and good proceed out of the mouth of the Highest?	38 Geht nicht hervor aus des Höchsten Mund das Gute wie auch das Böse?
39 Mem. Why hath a living man murmured, man suffering for his sins?	39 Wie dürfte denn ein Lebender klagen, ein Mann über die Folgen seiner Sünden?
40 Nun. Let us search our ways, and seek, and return to the Lord.	40 Prüfen wir unsre Wege, erforschen wir sie und kehren wir um zum Herrn.
41 Nun. Let us lift up our hearts with our hands to the Lord in the heavens.	41 Erheben wir Herz und Hand zu Gott im Himmel.
42 Nun. We have done wickedly, and provoked thee to wrath: therefore thou art inexorable.	42 Wir haben gesündigt und getrotzt; du aber hast nicht vergeben.
43 Samech. Thou hast covered in thy wrath, and hast struck us: thou hast killed and hast not spared.	43 Du hast dich in Zorn gehüllt und uns verfolgt, getötet und nicht geschont.
44 Samech. Thou hast set a cloud before thee, that our prayer may not pass through.	44 Du hast dich in Wolken gehüllt, kein Gebet kann sie durchstoßen.
45 Samech. Thou hast made me as an outcast, and refuse in the midst of the people.	45 Zu Unrat und Auswurf hast du uns gemacht inmitten der Völker.
46 Phe. All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.	46 Ihren Mund rissen gegen uns auf all unsre Feinde.
47 Phe. Prophecy is become to us a fear, and a snare, and destruction.	47 Grauen und Grube wurde uns zuteil, Verwüstung und Verderben.
48 Phe. My eye hath run down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.	48 Tränenströme vergießt mein Auge über den Zusammenbruch der Tochter, meines Volkes.
49 Ain. My eye is afflicted, and hath not been quiet, because there was no rest:	49 Mein Auge ergießt sich und ruht nicht; es hört nicht auf,
50 Ain. Till the Lord regarded and looked down from the heavens.	50 bis der Herr vom Himmel her sieht und schaut.
51 Ain. My eye hath wasted my soul because of all the daughters of my city.	51 Mein Auge macht mich elend vor lauter Weinen in meiner Stadt.
52 Sade. My enemies have chased me and caught me like a bird, without cause.	52 Wie auf einen Vogel machten sie Jagd auf mich, die ohne Grund meine Feinde sind.
53 Sade. My life is fallen into the pit, and they have laid a stone over me.	53 Sie stürzten in die Grube mein Leben und warfen Steine auf mich.
54 Sade. Waters have flowed over my head: I said: I am cut off.	54 Das Wasser ging mir über den Kopf; ich sagte: Ich bin verloren.
55 Coph. I have called upon thy name, O Lord, from the lowest pit.	55 Da rief ich deinen Namen, Herr, tief unten aus der Grube.
56 Coph. Thou hast heard my voice: turn not away thy ear from my sighs, and cries.	56 Du hörst meine Stimme. Verschließ nicht dein Ohr vor meinem Seufzen, meinem Schreien!
57 Coph. Thou drewest near in the day, when I called upon thee, thou saidst: Fear not.	57 Du warst nahe am Tag, da ich dich rief; du sagtest: Fürchte dich nicht!
58 Res. Thou hast judged, O Lord, the cause of my soul, thou the Redeemer of my life.	58 Du, Herr, hast meine Sache geführt, hast mein Leben erlöst.
59 Res. Thou hast seen, O Lord, their iniquity against me: judge thou my judgment.	59 Du, Herr, hast meine Bedrückung gesehen, hast mir Recht verschafft.
60 Res. Thou hast seen all their fury, and all their thoughts against me.	60 Du hast gesehen ihre ganze Rachgier, all ihr Planen gegen mich.
61 Sin. Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, all their imaginations against me.	61 Du hast ihr Schmähen gehört, o Herr, all ihr Planen gegen mich.
62 Sin. The lips of them that rise up against me: and their devices against me all the day.	62 Das Denken und Reden meiner Gegner ist gegen mich den ganzen Tag.
63 Sin. Behold their sitting down, and their rising up, I am their song.	63 Blick auf ihr Sitzen und Stehen! Ein Spottlied bin ich für sie.
64 Thau. Thou shalt render them a recompense, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.	64 Du wirst ihnen vergelten, Herr, nach dem Tun ihrer Hände.
65 Thau. Thou shalt give them a buckler of heart, thy labour.	65 Du wirst ihren Sinn verblenden. Dein Fluch über sie!
66 Thau. Thou shalt persecute them in anger, and shalt destroy them from under the heavens, O Lord.	66 Du wirst sie im Zorn verfolgen und vernichten unter deinem Himmel, o Herr.
