And Eliphaz the Themanite, answered, and said:1 Eliphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:
Will a wise man answer as if he were speaking in the wind, and fill his stomach with burning heat?2 Le sage doit-il dans ses réponses parler comme en l'air, et remplir sa poitrine d'une chaleur inconsidérée?
Thou reprovest him by words, who is not equal to thee, and thou speakest that which is not good for thee.3 Tu accuses par tes paroles Celui qui n'est pas ton égal, et tu parles d'une manière qui ne t'est point avantageuse.
As much as is in thee, thou hast made void fear, and hast taken away prayers from before God.4 Tu as détruit, autant qu'il est en toi, la crainte de Dieu, et supprimé les prières qu'on doit Lui offrir.
For thy iniquity hath taught thy mouth, and thou imitatest the tongue of blasphemers.5 Car ton iniquité a instruit ta bouche, et tu imites le langage des blasphémateurs.
Thy own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I: and thy own lips shall answer thee.6 C'est ta bouche qui te condamnera, et non pas moi; et tes lèvres déposeront contre toi.
Art thou the first man that was born, or wast thou made before the hills ?7 Es-tu né le premier des hommes, et as-tu été formé avant les collines?
Hast thou heard God's counsel, and shall his wisdom be inferior to thee?8 Es-tu entré dans le conseil de Dieu, et Sa sagesse sera-t-elle inférieure à la tienne?
What knowest thou that we are ignorant of? what dost thou understand that we know not?9 Que sais-tu que nous ignorions? et quelle lumière as-tu que nous n'ayons également?
There are with us also aged and ancient men, much elder than thy fathers.10 Parmi nous aussi il y a des vieillars et des anciens, beaucoup plus âgés que tes pères.
Is it a great matter that God should comfort thee? but thy wicked words hinder this.11 Serait-il difficile à Dieu de te consoler? Mais tu L'en empêches par tes paroles perverses.
Why doth thy heart elevate thee, and why dost thou stare with thy eyes, as if they were thinking great things ?12 Pourquoi ton coeur te soulève-t-il? L'étonnement de tes yeux ne marque-t-il pas l'orgueil de tes pensées?
Why doth thy spirit swell against God, to utter such words out of thy mouth ?13 Pourquoi ton esprit s'enfle-t-il contre Dieu, jusqu'à faire proférer à ta bouche de si étranges discours?
What is man that he should be without spot, and he that is born of a woman that he should appear just?14 Qu'est-ce que l'homme pour qu'il soit pur, et le fils de la femme pour paraître juste?
Behold among his saints none is unchangeable, and the heavens are not pure in his sight.15 Entre Ses Saints même, personne n'est impeccable, et les cieux ne sont pas purs devant Ses yeux.
How much more is man abominable, and unprofitable, who drinketh iniquity like water?16 Combien plus l'homme, qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau, est-il abominable et inutile?
I will shew thee, hear me : and I mill tell thee what I have seen.17 Je t'instruirai, écoute-moi; je te raconterai ce que j'ai vu.
Wise men confess and hide not their fathers.18 Les sages le publient, et ils ne cachent point ce qu'ils ont reçu de leurs pères,
To whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger hath passed among them.19 auxquels seuls cette terre a été donnée, et nul étranger ne passait parmi eux.
The wicked man is proud all his days, and the number of the years of his tyranny is uncertain.20 Durant tous ses jours, l'impie croît en orgueil, et le nombre des années de sa tyrannie est incertain.
The sound of dread is always in his ears: and when there is peace, he always suspecteth treason.21 Son oreille est toujours frappée de bruits effrayants, et au milieu de la paix il soupçonne toujours des embûches.
He believeth not that he may return from darkness to light, looking round about for the sword on every side.22 Il ne croit pas qu'il puisse revenir des ténèbres à la lumière, et il ne voit partout que le glaive.
When he moveth himself to seek bread, he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.23 Lorsqu'il se remue pour chercher son pain, il sait que le jour des ténèbres est prêt à ses côtés.
Tribulation shall terrify him, and distress shall surround him, as a king that is prepared for the battle.24 L'adversité l'épouvante, et l'angoisse l'assiège, comme un roi qui se prépare au combat.
For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and hath strengthened himself against the Almighty.25 Car il a étendu sa main contre Dieu, et il s'est raidi contre le Tout-Puissant.
He hath run against him with his neck raised up, and is armed with a fat neck.26 Il a couru contre Dieu le cou tendu; il s'est armé d'un orgueil inflexible.
Fatness hath covered his face, and the fat hangeth down on his sides.27 L'embonpoint a couvert tout son visage, et la graisse pend à ses flancs.
He hath dwelt in desolate cities, and in desert houses that are reduced into heaps.28 Il a mis sa demeure dans des villes désolées, dans des maisons désertes, qui ne sont plus que des monceaux de pierres.
He shall not be enriched, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he push his root in the earth.29 Il ne s'enrichira pas, son opulence ne durera point, et il ne poussera point de racine sur la terre.
He shall not depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his branches, and he shall be taken away by the breath of his own month.30 Il ne sortira pas des ténèbres; la flamme desséchera ses rameaux; le souffle de sa bouche l'emportera.
He shall not believe, being vainly deceived by error, that he may be redeemed with any price.31 Il ne croira pas, trompé par une vaine erreur, qu'il puisse être racheté à aucun prix.
Before his days be full he shall perish: and his hands shall wither away.32 Il périra avant que ses jours soient accomplis, et ses mains se dessécheront.
He shall be blasted as a vine when its grapes are in the first flower, and as an olive tree that casteth its flower.33 Sa grappe sera frappée comme celle de la vigne à peine fleurie, et comme l'olivier qui laisse tomber sa fleur.
For the congregation of the hypocrite is barren, and fire shall devour their tabernacles, who love to take bribes.34 Car la famille de l'hypocrite sera inféconde, et le feu dévorera les maisons de ceux qui aiment à recevoir des présents.
He hath conceived sorrow, and hath brought forth iniquity, and his womb prepareth deceits.35 Il conçoit la douleur et il enfante l'iniquité, et son sein prépare la déception.
