DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 LA Sapienza non grida ella? E la Prudenza non dà ella fuori la sua voce?	1 Is not Wisdom cal ing? Is not Understanding raising her voice?
2 Ella sta in piè in capo de’ luoghi elevati, in su la via, Ne’ crocicchi.	2 On the heights overlooking the road, at the crossways, she takes her stand;
3 Ella grida presso alle porte, alla bocca della città, All’entrata degli usci delle case,	3 by the gates, at the entrance to the city, on the access-roads, she cries out,
4 Dicendo: Io grido a voi, o uomini principali; E la mia voce s’indirizza ancora al volgo.	4 'I am cal ing to you, al people, my words are addressed to al humanity.
5 Semplici, intendete che cosa sia avvedimento; E voi stolti, intendete che cosa sia buon senno.	5 Simpletons, learn how to behave, fools, come to your senses.
6 Ascoltate; perciocchè io proporrò cose eccellenti; L’aprir delle mie labbra sarà di cose diritte.	6 Listen, I have something important to tel you, when I speak, my words are right.
7 Conciossiachè il mio palato ragionerà di verità; Ma l’empietà è ciò che le mie labbra abbominano.	7 My mouth proclaims the truth, for evil is abhorrent to my lips.
8 Tutti i detti della mia bocca son con giustizia; In essi non vi è nulla di torto o di perverso.	8 Al the words from my mouth are upright, nothing false there, nothing crooked,
9 Essi tutti son diritti agl’intendenti, E bene addirizzati a coloro che hanno trovata la scienza.	9 everything plain, if you can understand, straight, if you have acquired knowledge.
10 Ricevete il mio ammaestramento, e non dell’argento; E scienza, anzi che oro eletto.	10 Accept my discipline rather than silver, and knowledge of me in preference to finest gold.
11 Perciocchè la sapienza è migliore che le perle; E tutte le cose le più care non l’agguagliano	11 For Wisdom is more precious than jewels, and nothing else is so worthy of desire.
12 Io, la Sapienza, abito nell’avvedimento, E trovo la conoscenza de’ buoni avvisi.	12 'I, Wisdom, share house with Discretion, I am mistress of the art of thought.
13 Il timor del Signore è odiare il male; Io odio la superbia, e l’alterezza, e la via della malvagità, E la bocca perversa.	13 (Fear of Yahweh means hatred of evil.) I hate pride and arrogance, wicked behaviour and a lyingmouth.
14 A me appartiene il consiglio e la buona ragione; Io son la prudenza; a me appartiene la forza.	14 To me belong good advice and prudence, I am perception: power is mine!
15 Per me regnano i re, Ed i rettori fanno statuti di giustizia.	15 By me monarchs rule and princes decree what is right;
16 Per me signoreggiano i signori, Ed i principi, e tutti i giudici della terra.	16 by me rulers govern, so do nobles, the lawful authorities.
17 Io amo quelli che mi amano; E quelli che mi cercano mi troveranno.	17 I love those who love me; whoever searches eagerly for me finds me.
18 Ricchezze e gloria son meco; Beni permanenti e giustizia.	18 With me are riches and honour, lasting wealth and saving justice.
19 Il mio frutto è migliore che oro, anzi che oro finissimo; E la mia rendita migliore che argento eletto.	19 The fruit I give is better than gold, even the finest, the return I make is better than pure silver.
20 Io cammino per la via della giustizia, In mezzo de’ sentieri della dirittura;	20 I walk in the way of uprightness in the path of justice,
21 Per fare eredare il vero essere a quelli che mi amano, Ed empiere i lor tesori	21 to endow my friends with my wealth and to fil their treasuries.
22 IL Signore mi possedeva al principio della sua via, Avanti le sue opere, ab eterno.	22 'Yahweh created me, first-fruits of his fashioning, before the oldest of his works.
23 Io sono stata costituita in principato ab eterno, Dal principio, avanti che la terra fosse.	23 From everlasting, I was firmly set, from the beginning, before the earth came into being.
24 Avanti che fossero abissi, Nè fonti, nè gorghi d’acque, io fui prodotta.	24 The deep was not, when I was born, nor were the springs with their abounding waters.
25 Io fui prodotta innanzi che i monti fossero profondati, Avanti i colli;	25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hil s, I came to birth;
26 Mentre egli non avea ancora fatta la terra, nè le campagne, Nè la sommità del terreno del mondo.	26 before he had made the earth, the countryside, and the first elements of the world.
27 Quando egli ordinava i cieli, io v’era; Quando egli disegnava il giro sopra la superficie dell’abisso;	27 When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a circle on the surface of the deep,
28 Quando egli fermava il cielo disopra; Quando egli fortificava le fonti dell’abisso;	28 when he thickened the clouds above, when the sources of the deep began to swel ,
29 Quando egli poneva il suo termine al mare, Talchè le acque non possono trapassare il suo comandamento; Quando egli poneva i fondamenti della terra;	29 when he assigned the sea its boundaries -- and the waters will not encroach on the shore -- when hetraced the foundations of the earth,
30 Ed era appo lui come un allievo, Ed era le sue delizie tuttodì; Io mi sollazzava in ogni tempo nel suo cospetto.	30 I was beside the master craftsman, delighting him day after day, ever at play in his presence,
31 Io mi sollazzo nella parte abitata della sua terra; Ed i miei diletti sono co’ figliuoli degli uomini	31 at play everywhere on his earth, delighting to be with the children of men.
32 Ora dunque, figliuoli, ascoltatemi: Beati coloro che osservano le mie vie.	32 'And now, my children, listen to me. Happy are those who keep my ways.
33 Ascoltate l’ammaestramento, e diventate savi, E non lo schifate.	33 Listen to instruction and become wise, do not reject it.
34 Beato l’uomo che mi ascolta, Per vegliar tuttodì presso a’ miei usci; Per istare a guardia agli stipiti delle mie porte.	34 Blessed, whoever listens to me, who day after day keeps watch at my gates to guard my portals.
35 Perciocchè chi mi trova, trova la vita, Ed ottiene benevolenza dal Signore.	35 For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains the favour of Yahweh;
36 Ma chi pecca contro a me fa ingiuria all’anima sua; Tutti quelli che mi odiano amano la morte	36 but whoever misses me harms himself, al who hate me are in love with death.'
