| 3 Orfani siamo diventati, senza padre, le nostre madri sono come vedove. | 3 We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. |
| 4 Beviamo la nostra acqua a prezzo d'argento, acquistiamo a pagamento la nostra legna. | 4 We must pay for the water we drink, the wood we get must be bought. |
| 5 Con un giogo sul collo siamo inseguiti: siamo esausti e non ci è dato riposo. | 5 With a yoke on our necks we are hard driven; we are weary, we are given no rest. |
| 6 All'Egitto abbiamo teso la mano, all'Assiria, per saziarci di pane. | 6 We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough. |
| 7 I nostri padri hanno peccato e non sono più, a noi sono addossate le loro colpe. | 7 Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities. |
| 8 Schiavi signoreggiano su di noi, nessuno può strapparci dalle loro mani. | 8 Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand. |
| 9 A rischio della nostra vita ci procuriamo il pane dinanzi alla spada del deserto. | 9 We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. |
| 10 La nostra pelle s'è screpolata come un forno per l'ardore della fame. | 10 Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine. |
| 11 Alle donne hanno fatto oltraggio in Sion, alle vergini nella città di Giuda. | 11 Women are ravished in Zion, virgins in the towns of Judah. |
| 12 Hanno impiccato i nobili con le loro mani, non è stato onorato il volto dei vegliardi. | 12 Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. |
| 13 I giovani sono stati aggiogati alla macina di grano, i ragazzi sono caduti sotto il carico di legna. | 13 Young men are compelled to grind at the mill; and boys stagger under loads of wood. |
| 14 I vegliardi hanno cessato di adunarsi alla porta, i giovani hanno cessato le loro canzoni. | 14 The old men have quit the city gate, the young men their music. |
| 15 E' finita la gioia del nostro cuore: s'è volta in lutto la nostra danza. | 15 The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning. |
| 16 E' caduta la corona dal nostro capo: guai a noi che abbiamo peccato! | 16 The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! |
| 17 Per questo s'è ammalato il nostro cuore, per questo si sono intorbiditi i nostri occhi: | 17 For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim, |
| 18 per il monte Sion, che è desolato: lo percorrono le volpi. | 18 for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it. |
| 19 Ma tu, Signore, resti per sempre, il tuo trono è di generazione in generazione. | 19 But thou, O LORD, dost reign for ever; thy throne endures to all generations. |
| 20 Perché ci dimenticherai in eterno? Ci abbandonerai per la lunghezza dei giorni? | 20 Why dost thou forget us for ever, why dost thou so long forsake us? |
| 21 Facci ritornare a te, Signore, e noi ritorneremo, rinnova i nostri giorni come in antico! | 21 Restore us to thyself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old! |
| 22 Poiché non ci rigetti definitivamente né sei sdegnato oltre misura contro di noi. | 22 Or hast thou utterly rejected us? Art thou exceedingly angry with us? |
