A Canticle in steps. From the depths, I have cried out to you, O Lord.1 [Song of Ascents] Often as men have attacked me since I was young -- let Israel repeat it-
O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.2 often as men have attacked me since I was young, they have never overcome me.
If you, O Lord, were to heed iniquities, who, O Lord, could persevere?3 On my back ploughmen have set to work, making long furrows,
For with you, there is forgiveness, and because of your law, I persevered with you, Lord. My soul has persevered in his word.4 but Yahweh the upright has shattered the yoke of the wicked.
My soul has hoped in the Lord.5 Let al who hate Zion be thrown back in confusion,
From the morning watch, even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.6 let them be like grass on a roof, dried up before it is cut,
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him there is bountiful redemption.7 never to fil the reaper's arm nor the binder's lap.
And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.8 And no passer-by wil say, 'The blessing of Yahweh be on you! 'We bless you in the name ofYahweh.'
