1 Schon viele haben es unternommen, einen Bericht über all das abzufassen, was sich unter uns ereignet und erfüllt hat.	1 Since, indeed, many have attempted to set in order a narrative of the things that have been completed among us,

5 Zur Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, lebte ein Priester namens Zacharias, der zur Priesterklasse Abija gehörte. Seine Frau stammte aus dem Geschlecht Aarons; sie hieß Elisabet.	5 There was, in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the section of Abijah, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Beide lebten so, wie es in den Augen Gottes recht ist, und hielten sich in allem streng an die Gebote und Vorschriften des Herrn.	6 Now they were both just before God, progressing in all of the commandments and the justifications of the Lord without blame.

8 Eines Tages, als seine Priesterklasse wieder an der Reihe war und er beim Gottesdienst mitzuwirken hatte,	8 Then it happened that, when he was exercising the priesthood before God, in the order of his section,
9 wurde, wie nach der Priesterordnung üblich, das Los geworfen, und Zacharias fiel die Aufgabe zu, im Tempel des Herrn das Rauchopfer darzubringen.	9 according to the custom of the priesthood, the lot fell so that he would offer incense, entering into the temple of the Lord.
10 Während er nun zur festgelegten Zeit das Opfer darbrachte, stand das ganze Volk draußen und betete.	10 And the entire multitude of the people was praying outside, at the hour of incense.
11 Da erschien dem Zacharias ein Engel des Herrn; er stand auf der rechten Seite des Rauchopferaltars.	11 Then there appeared to him an Angel of the Lord, standing at the right of the altar of incense.
12 Als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er und es befiel ihn Furcht.	12 And upon seeing him, Zechariah was disturbed, and fear fell over him.
13 Der Engel aber sagte zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! Dein Gebet ist erhört worden. Deine Frau Elisabet wird dir einen Sohn gebären; dem sollst du den Namen Johannes geben.	13 But the Angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear a son to you. And you shall call his name John.
14 Große Freude wird dich erfüllen und auch viele andere werden sich über seine Geburt freuen.	14 And there will be joy and exultation for you, and many will rejoice in his nativity.
15 Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn. Wein und andere berauschende Getränke wird er nicht trinken und schon im Mutterleib wird er vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt sein.	15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
16 Viele Israeliten wird er zum Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren.	16 And he will convert many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.
17 Er wird mit dem Geist und mit der Kraft des Elija dem Herrn vorangehen, um das Herz der Väter wieder den Kindern zuzuwenden und die Ungehorsamen zur Gerechtigkeit zu führen und so das Volk für den Herrn bereit zu machen.	17 And he will go before him with the spirit and power of Elijah, so that he may turn the hearts of the fathers to the sons, and the incredulous to the prudence of the just, so as to prepare for the Lord a completed people.”
18 Zacharias sagte zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich erkennen, dass das wahr ist? Ich bin ein alter Mann und auch meine Frau ist in vorgerücktem Alter.	18 And Zechariah said to the Angel: “How may I know this? For I am elderly, and my wife is advanced in years.”
19 Der Engel erwiderte ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und ich bin gesandt worden, um mit dir zu reden und dir diese frohe Botschaft zu bringen.	19 And in response, the Angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I have been sent to speak to you, and to proclaim these things to you.
20 Aber weil du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die in Erfüllung gehen, wenn die Zeit dafür da ist, sollst du stumm sein und nicht mehr reden können bis zu dem Tag, an dem all das eintrifft.	20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak, until the day on which these things shall be, because you have not believed my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”
21 Inzwischen wartete das Volk auf Zacharias und wunderte sich, dass er so lange im Tempel blieb.	21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah. And they wondered why he was being delayed in the temple.
22 Als er dann herauskam, konnte er nicht mit ihnen sprechen. Da merkten sie, dass er im Tempel eine Erscheinung gehabt hatte. Er gab ihnen nur Zeichen mit der Hand und blieb stumm.	22 Then, when he came out, he was unable to speak to them. And they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, but he remained mute.
23 Als die Tage seines Dienstes (im Tempel) zu Ende waren, kehrte er nach Hause zurück.	23 And it happened that, after the days of his office were completed, he went away to his house.
24 Bald darauf empfing seine Frau Elisabet einen Sohn und lebte fünf Monate lang zurückgezogen. Sie sagte:	24 Then, after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she hid herself for five months, saying:
25 Der Herr hat mir geholfen; er hat in diesen Tagen gnädig auf mich geschaut und mich von der Schande befreit, mit der ich in den Augen der Menschen beladen war.	25 “For the Lord did this for me, at the time when he decided to take away my reproach among men.”
26 Im sechsten Monat wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott in eine Stadt in Galiläa namens Nazaret	26 Then, in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 zu einer Jungfrau gesandt. Sie war mit einem Mann namens Josef verlobt, der aus dem Haus David stammte. Der Name der Jungfrau war Maria.	27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary.
28 Der Engel trat bei ihr ein und sagte: Sei gegrüßt, du Begnadete, der Herr ist mit dir.	28 And upon entering, the Angel said to her: “Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.”
29 Sie erschrak über die Anrede und überlegte, was dieser Gruß zu bedeuten habe.	29 And when she had heard this, she was disturbed by his words, and she considered what kind of greeting this might be.
30 Da sagte der Engel zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria; denn du hast bei Gott Gnade gefunden.	30 And the Angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God.
31 Du wirst ein Kind empfangen, einen Sohn wirst du gebären: dem sollst du den Namen Jesus geben.	31 Behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and you shall bear a son, and you shall call his name: JESUS.
32 Er wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden. Gott, der Herr, wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben.	32 He will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. And he will reign in the house of Jacob for eternity.
33 Er wird über das Haus Jakob in Ewigkeit herrschen und seine Herrschaft wird kein Ende haben.	33 And his kingdom shall have no end.”
34 Maria sagte zu dem Engel: Wie soll das geschehen, da ich keinen Mann erkenne?	34 Then Mary said to the Angel, “How shall this be done, since I do not know man?”
35 Der Engel antwortete ihr: Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten. Deshalb wird auch das Kind heilig und Sohn Gottes genannt werden.	35 And in response, the Angel said to her: “The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
36 Auch Elisabet, deine Verwandte, hat noch in ihrem Alter einen Sohn empfangen; obwohl sie als unfruchtbar galt, ist sie jetzt schon im sechsten Monat.	36 And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has herself also conceived a son, in her old age. And this is the sixth month for her who is called barren.
37 Denn für Gott ist nichts unmöglich.	37 For no word will be impossible with God.”
38 Da sagte Maria: Ich bin die Magd des Herrn; mir geschehe, wie du es gesagt hast. Danach verließ sie der Engel.	38 Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” And the Angel departed from her.
39 Nach einigen Tagen machte sich Maria auf den Weg und eilte in eine Stadt im Bergland von Judäa.	39 And in those days, Mary, rising up, traveled quickly into the hill country, to a city of Judah.
40 Sie ging in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte Elisabet.	40 And she entered into the house of Zechariah, and she greeted Elizabeth.
41 Als Elisabet den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leib. Da wurde Elisabet vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt	41 And it happened that, as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 und rief mit lauter Stimme: Gesegnet bist du mehr als alle anderen Frauen und gesegnet ist die Frucht deines Leibes.	42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 Wer bin ich, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt?	43 And how does this concern me, so that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
44 In dem Augenblick, als ich deinen Gruß hörte, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude in meinem Leib.	44 For behold, as the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Selig ist die, die geglaubt hat, dass sich erfüllt, was der Herr ihr sagen ließ.	45 And blessed are you who believed, for the things that were spoken to you by the Lord shall be accomplished.”
46 Da sagte Maria: Meine Seele preist die Größe des Herrn,	46 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord.
47 und mein Geist jubelt über Gott, meinen Retter.	47 And my spirit leaps for joy in God my Saviour.
48 Denn auf die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd hat er geschaut. Siehe, von nun an preisen mich selig alle Geschlechter.	48 For he has looked with favor on the humility of his handmaid. For behold, from this time, all generations shall call me blessed.
49 Denn der Mächtige hat Großes an mir getan und sein Name ist heilig.	49 For he who is great has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50 Er erbarmt sich von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht über alle, die ihn fürchten.	50 And his mercy is from generation to generations for those who fear him.
51 Er vollbringt mit seinem Arm machtvolle Taten: Er zerstreut, die im Herzen voll Hochmut sind;	51 He has accomplished powerful deeds with his arm. He has scattered the arrogant in the intentions of their heart.
52 er stürzt die Mächtigen vom Thron und erhöht die Niedrigen.	52 He has deposed the powerful from their seat, and he has exalted the humble.
53 Die Hungernden beschenkt er mit seinen Gaben und lässt die Reichen leer ausgehen.	53 He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 Er nimmt sich seines Knechtes Israel an und denkt an sein Erbarmen,	54 He has taken up his servant Israel, mindful of his mercy,
55 das er unsern Vätern verheißen hat, Abraham und seinen Nachkommen auf ewig.	55 just as he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
56 Und Maria blieb etwa drei Monate bei ihr; dann kehrte sie nach Hause zurück.	56 Then Mary stayed with her for about three months. And she returned to her own house.
57 Für Elisabet kam die Zeit der Niederkunft und sie brachte einen Sohn zur Welt.	57 Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth arrived, and she brought forth a son.
58 Ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, welch großes Erbarmen der Herr ihr erwiesen hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr.	58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy with her, and so they congratulated her.
59 Am achten Tag kamen sie zur Beschneidung des Kindes und wollten ihm den Namen seines Vaters Zacharias geben.	59 And it happened that, on the eighth day, they arrived to circumcise the boy, and they called him by his father’s name, Zechariah.
60 Seine Mutter aber widersprach ihnen und sagte: Nein, er soll Johannes heißen.	60 And in response, his mother said: “Not so. Instead, he shall be called John.”
61 Sie antworteten ihr: Es gibt doch niemand in deiner Verwandtschaft, der so heißt.	61 And they said to her, “But there is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.”
62 Da fragten sie seinen Vater durch Zeichen, welchen Namen das Kind haben solle.	62 Then they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him to be called.
63 Er verlangte ein Schreibtäfelchen und schrieb zum Erstaunen aller darauf: Sein Name ist Johannes.	63 And requesting a writing tablet, he wrote, saying: “His name is John.” And they all wondered.
64 Im gleichen Augenblick konnte er Mund und Zunge wieder gebrauchen, und er redete und pries Gott.	64 Then, at once, his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosened, and he spoke, blessing God.
65 Und alle, die in jener Gegend wohnten, erschraken und man sprach von all diesen Dingen im ganzen Bergland von Judäa.	65 And fear fell upon all of their neighbors. And all these words were made known throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 Alle, die davon hörten, machten sich Gedanken darüber und sagten: Was wird wohl aus diesem Kind werden? Denn es war deutlich, dass die Hand des Herrn mit ihm war.	66 And all those who heard it stored it up in their heart, saying: “What do you think this boy will be?” And indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 Sein Vater Zacharias wurde vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt und begann prophetisch zu reden:	67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit. And he prophesied, saying:
68 Gepriesen sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! Denn er hat sein Volk besucht und ihm Erlösung geschaffen;	68 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel. For he has visited and has wrought the redemption of his people.
69 er hat uns einen starken Retter erweckt im Hause seines Knechtes David.	69 And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us, in the house of David his servant,
70 So hat er verheißen von alters her durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten.	70 just as he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, who are from ages past:
71 Er hat uns errettet vor unseren Feinden und aus der Hand aller, die uns hassen;	71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all those who hate us,
72 er hat das Erbarmen mit den Vätern an uns vollendet und an seinen heiligen Bund gedacht,	72 to accomplish mercy with our fathers, and to call to mind his holy testament,
73 an den Eid, den er unserm Vater Abraham geschworen hat;	73 the oath, which he swore to Abraham, our father, that he would grant to us,
74 er hat uns geschenkt, dass wir, aus Feindeshand befreit, ihm furchtlos dienen	74 so that, having been freed from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,
75 in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor seinem Angesicht all unsre Tage.	75 in holiness and in justice before him, throughout all our days.
76 Und du, Kind, wirst Prophet des Höchsten heißen; denn du wirst dem Herrn vorangehen und ihm den Weg bereiten.	76 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the face of the Lord: to prepare his ways,
77 Du wirst sein Volk mit der Erfahrung des Heils beschenken in der Vergebung der Sünden.	77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people for the remission of their sins,
78 Durch die barmherzige Liebe unseres Gottes wird uns besuchen das aufstrahlende Licht aus der Höhe,	78 through the heart of the mercy of our God, by which, descending from on high, he has visited us,
79 um allen zu leuchten, die in Finsternis sitzen und im Schatten des Todes, und unsre Schritte zu lenken auf den Weg des Friedens.	79 to illuminate those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to direct our feet in the way of peace.”
80 Das Kind wuchs heran und sein Geist wurde stark. Und Johannes lebte in der Wüste bis zu dem Tag, an dem er den Auftrag erhielt, in Israel aufzutreten.	80 And the child grew, and he was strengthened in spirit. And he was in the wilderness, until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
