1 Besser ein guter Name als Parfüm - und der Tag eines Todes als der Tag einer Geburt;	1 What needeth a man to seek things that are above him, whereas he knoweth not what is profitable for him in his life, in all the days of his pilgrimage, and the time that passeth like a shadow? Or who can tell him what shall be after him under the sun?
2 besser der Gang in ein Haus, wo man trauert, als der Gang in ein Haus, wo man trinkt. Weil dies das Ende jedes Menschen ist, macht, wer noch lebt, sich Gedanken.	2 A good name is better than precious ointments: and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
3 Besser sich ärgern als lachen; denn bei einem vergrämten Gesicht wird das Herz heiter.	3 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to the house of feasting: for in that we are put in mind of the end of all, and the living thinketh what is to come.
4 Das Herz der Gebildeten ist im Haus, wo man trauert, das Herz der Ungebildeten im Haus, wo man sich freut.	4 Anger is better than laughter: because by the sadness of the countenance the mind of the offender is corrected.
5 Besser die Mahnrede eines Gebildeten anhören, als dem Gesang der Ungebildeten lauschen;	5 The heart of the wise is where there is mourning, and the heart of fools where there is mirth.
6 denn wie das Prasseln der Dornen unter dem Kessel, so ist das Lachen des Ungebildeten. - Aber auch das ist Windhauch, denn:	6 It is better to be rebuked by a wise man, than to be deceived by the flattery of fools.
7 Erpressung verblendet den Gebildeten und Bestechung verdirbt den Verstand.	7 For as the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool: now this also is vanity.
8 Besser der Ausgang einer Sache als ihr Anfang, besser der Vorsichtige als der Stürmische.	8 Oppression troubleth the wise, and shall destroy the strength of his heart.
9 Lass dich nicht aufregen, sodass du dich ärgerst, denn Ärger steckt in den Ungebildeten. -	9 Better is the end of a speech than the beginning. Better is the patient man than the presumptuous.
10 Doch frag nicht: Wie kommt es, dass die früheren Zeiten besser waren als unsere? Denn deine Frage zeugt nicht von Wissen.	10 Be not quickly angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of a fool.
11 Wissen ist so viel wert wie Erbbesitz, es ist sogar mehr wert für die, welche die Sonne sehen;	11 Say not: What thinkest thou is the cause that former times were better than they are now? for this manner of question is foolish.
12 denn wer sich im Schatten des Wissens birgt, der ist auch im Schatten des Geldes; aber das ist der Vorteil des Könnens: Das Wissen erhält seinen Besitzer am Leben. -	12 Wisdom with riches is more profitable, and bringeth more advantage to them that see the sun.
13 Doch sieh ein, dass Gottes Tun noch hinzukommt. Denn: Wer kann gerade biegen, was er gekrümmt hat?	13 For as wisdom is a defence, so money is a defence : but learning and wisdom excel in this, that they give life to him that possesseth them.
14 Am Glückstag erfreue dich deines Glücks und am Unglückstag sieh ein: Auch diesen hat Gott geschaffen, genau wie jenen, sodass der Mensch von dem, was nach ihm kommt, gar nichts herausfinden kann.	14 Consider the works of God, that no man can correct whom he hath despised.
15 In meinen Tagen voll Windhauch habe ich beides beobachtet: Es kommt vor, dass ein gesetzestreuer Mensch trotz seiner Gesetzestreue elend endet, und es kommt vor, dass einer, der sich nicht um das Gesetz kümmert, trotz seines bösen Tuns ein langes Leben hat.	15 In the good day enjoy good things, and beware beforehand of the evil day: for God hath made both the one and the other, that man may not find against him any just complaint.
16 Halte dich nicht zu streng an das Gesetz und sei nicht maßlos im Erwerb von Wissen! Warum solltest du dich selbst ruinieren?	16 These things also I saw in the days of my vanity: A just man perisheth in his justice, and a wicked man liveth a long time in his wickedness.
17 Entfern dich nicht zu weit vom Gesetz und verharre nicht im Unwissen: Warum solltest du vor der Zeit sterben?	17 Be not over just: and be not more wise than is necessary, lest thou become stupid.
18 Es ist am besten, wenn du an dem einen fest hältst, aber auch das andere nicht loslässt. Wer Gott fürchtet, wird sich in jedem Fall richtig verhalten.	18 Be not overmuch wicked: and be not foolish, lest thou die before thy time.
19 Das Wissen ist für den Gebildeten ein stärkerer Schutz als zehn Machthaber zusammen, die in der Stadt geherrscht haben. -	19 It is good that thou shouldst hold up the just, yea and from him withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God, neglecteth nothing.
20 Doch gibt es auf der Erde keinen einzigen Menschen, der so gesetzestreu wäre, dass er stets richtig handelt, ohne je einen Fehler zu begehen.	20 Wisdom hath strengthened the wise more than ten princes of the city.
21 Hör auch nicht auf all die Worte, die man so sagt. Denn niemals wirst du einen Untergebenen über dich schimpfen hören,	21 For there is no just man upon earth, that doth good, and sinneth not.
22 und doch bist du dir bewusst, dass auch du sehr oft über andere geschimpft hast.	22 But do not apply thy heart to all words that are spoken: lest perhaps thou hear thy servant reviling thee.
23 Auf allen Wegen habe ich es mit dem Wissen versucht. Ich habe gesagt: Ich will lernen und dadurch gebildet werden. Aber das Wissen blieb für mich in der Ferne.	23 For thy conscience knoweth that thou also hast often spoken evil of others.
24 Fern ist alles, was geschehen ist, und tief, tief versunken - wer könnte es wieder finden?	24 I have tried all things in wisdom. I have said: I will be wise: and it departed farther from me,
25 So habe ich, genauer: mein Verstand, mich umgestellt. Ich wollte forschend und suchend erkennen, was dasjenige Wissen wirklich ist, das Einzelbeobachtungen zusammenrechnet. Ferner wollte ich erkennen, ob Gesetzesübertretung mit mangelnder Bildung und Unwissen mit Verblendung zusammenhängt.	25 Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?
26 Immer wieder finde ich die Ansicht, stärker als der Tod sei die Frau. Denn: Sie ist ein Ring von Belagerungstürmen und ihr Herz ist ein Fangnetz, Fesseln sind ihre Arme. Wem Gott wohlwill, der kann sich vor ihr retten, wessen Leben verfehlt ist, wird von ihr eingefangen.	26 I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:
27 Aber sieh dir an, was ich, Beobachtung um Beobachtung, herausgefunden habe, sagte Kohelet, bis ich schließlich das Rechenergebnis fand,	27 And I have found a woman more bitter than death, who is the hunter's snare, and her heart is a net, and her hands are bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her: but he that is a sinner, shall be caught by her.
28 oder vielmehr: wie ich immer wieder suchte und nichts fand: Von tausend Menschen habe ich nur einen wieder gefunden, aber der, den ich von ihnen allen wieder gefunden habe, war keine Frau.	28 Lo this have I found, said Ecclesiastes, weighing one thing after another, that I might find out the account,
29 Sieh dir an, was ich als Einziges herausgefunden habe: Gott hat die Menschen rechtschaffen gemacht, aber sie haben sich in allen möglichen Berechnungen versucht.	29 Which yet my soul seeketh, and I have not found it. One man among a thousand I have found, a woman among them all I have not found.
	30 Only this I have found, that God made man right, and he hath entangled himself with an infinity of questions. Who is as the wise man? and who hath known the resolution of the word?
