2 Windhauch, Windhauch, sagte Kohelet, Windhauch, Windhauch, das ist alles Windhauch.	2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!
3 Welchen Vorteil hat der Mensch von all seinem Besitz, für den er sich anstrengt unter der Sonne?	3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?
4 Eine Generation geht, eine andere kommt. Die Erde steht in Ewigkeit.	4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.
5 Die Sonne, die aufging und wieder unterging, atemlos jagt sie zurück an den Ort, wo sie wieder aufgeht.	5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,
6 Er weht nach Süden, dreht nach Norden, dreht, dreht, weht, der Wind. Weil er sich immerzu dreht, kehrt er zurück, der Wind.	6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.
7 Alle Flüsse fließen ins Meer, das Meer wird nicht voll. Zu dem Ort, wo die Flüsse entspringen, kehren sie zurück, um wieder zu entspringen.	7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.
8 Alle Dinge sind rastlos tätig, kein Mensch kann alles ausdrücken, nie wird ein Auge satt, wenn es beobachtet, nie wird ein Ohr vom Hören voll.	8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.
9 Was geschehen ist, wird wieder geschehen, was man getan hat, wird man wieder tun: Es gibt nichts Neues unter der Sonne.	9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.
10 Zwar gibt es bisweilen ein Ding, von dem es heißt: Sieh dir das an, das ist etwas Neues - aber auch das gab es schon in den Zeiten, die vor uns gewesen sind.	10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.
11 Nur gibt es keine Erinnerung an die Früheren und auch an die Späteren, die erst kommen werden, auch an sie wird es keine Erinnerung geben bei denen, die noch später kommen werden.	11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.
12 Ich, Kohelet, war in Jerusalem König über Israel.	12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.
13 Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, das Wissen daraufhin zu untersuchen und zu erforschen, ob nicht alles, was unter dem Himmel getan wurde, ein schlechtes Geschäft war, für das die einzelnen Menschen durch Gottes Auftrag sich abgemüht haben.	13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.
14 Ich beobachtete alle Taten, die unter der Sonne getan wurden. Das Ergebnis: Das ist alles Windhauch und Luftgespinst.	14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.
15 Was krumm ist, kann man nicht gerade biegen; was nicht da ist, kann man nicht zählen.	15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.
16 Ich überlegte mir Folgendes: Ich habe mein Wissen immerzu vergrößert, sodass ich jetzt darin jeden übertreffe, der vor mir über Jerusalem geherrscht hat. Oft konnte ich Wissen und Können beobachten.	16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.
17 So habe ich mir vorgenommen zu erkennen, was Wissen wirklich ist, und zu erkennen, was Verblendung und Unwissen wirklich sind. Ich erkannte, dass auch dies ein Luftgespinst ist.	17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.
18 Denn: Viel Wissen, viel Ärger, wer das Können mehrt, der mehrt die Sorge.	18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.
