DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children;1 So be imitators of God, as beloved children,
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness.2 and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints:3 Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones,
Or obscenity, or foolish talking, or scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks.4 no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.
For know you this and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean, or covetous person (which is a serving of idols), hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.5 Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief.6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient.
Be ye not therefore partakers with them.7 So do not be associated with them.
For you were heretofore darkness, but now light in the Lord. Walk then as children of the light.8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,
For the fruit of the light is in all goodness, and justice, and truth;9 for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.
Proving what is well pleasing to God:10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.11 Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,
For the things that are done by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of.12 for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret;
But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light; for all that is made manifest is light.13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
Wherefore he saith: Rise thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead: and Christ shall enlighten thee.14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."
See therefore, brethren, how you walk circumspectly: not as unwise,15 Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise,
But as wise: redeeming the time, because the days are evil.16 making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil.
Wherefore become not unwise, but understanding what is the will of God.17 Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury; but be ye filled with the holy Spirit,18 And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord;19 addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts,
Giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father:20 giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
Being subject one to another, in the fear of Christ.21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.
Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.
Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things.24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the church, and delivered himself up for it:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her
That he might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life:26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any; such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish.27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
So also ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself.28 So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as also Christ doth the church:29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church,
Because we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.30 because we are members of his body.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be two in one flesh.31 "For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
This is a great sacrament; but I speak in Christ and in the church.32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular love his wife as himself: and let the wife fear her husband.33 In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.
