SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Naqueles tempos apareceu um decreto de César Augusto, ordenando o recenseamento de toda a terra.	1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made ofthe whole inhabited world.
2 Este recenseamento foi feito antes do governo de Quirino, na Síria.	2 This census -- the first -- took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,
3 Todos iam alistar-se, cada um na sua cidade.	3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.
4 Também José subiu da Galiléia, da cidade de Nazaré, à Judéia, à Cidade de Davi, chamada Belém, porque era da casa e família de Davi,	4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David's town cal ed Bethlehem,since he was of David's House and line,
5 para se alistar com a sua esposa Maria, que estava grávida.	5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6 Estando eles ali, completaram-se os dias dela.	6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7 E deu à luz seu filho primogênito, e, envolvendo-o em faixas, reclinou-o num presépio; porque não havia lugar para eles na hospedaria.	7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger because there was no room for them in the living-space.
8 Havia nos arredores uns pastores, que vigiavam e guardavam seu rebanho nos campos durante as vigílias da noite.	8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep duringthe watches of the night.
9 Um anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhes e a glória do Senhor refulgiu ao redor deles, e tiveram grande temor.	9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified,
10 O anjo disse-lhes: Não temais, eis que vos anuncio uma boa nova que será alegria para todo o povo:	10 but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by thewhole people.
11 hoje vos nasceu na Cidade de Davi um Salvador, que é o Cristo Senhor.	11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
12 Isto vos servirá de sinal: achareis um recém-nascido envolto em faixas e posto numa manjedoura.	12 And here is a sign for you: you wil find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.'
13 E subitamente ao anjo se juntou uma multidão do exército celeste, que louvava a Deus e dizia:	13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with thewords:
14 Glória a Deus no mais alto dos céus e na terra paz aos homens, objetos da benevolência {divina}.	14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.
15 Depois que os anjos os deixaram e voltaram para o céu, falaram os pastores uns com os outros: Vamos até Belém e vejamos o que se realizou e o que o Senhor nos manifestou.	15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to oneanother, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.'
16 Foram com grande pressa e acharam Maria e José, e o menino deitado na manjedoura.	16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.
17 Vendo-o, contaram o que se lhes havia dito a respeito deste menino.	17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him,
18 Todos os que os ouviam admiravam-se das coisas que lhes contavam os pastores.	18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.
19 Maria conservava todas estas palavras, meditando-as no seu coração.	19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.
20 Voltaram os pastores, glorificando e louvando a Deus por tudo o que tinham ouvido e visto, e que estava de acordo com o que lhes fora dito.	20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for al they had heard and seen, just as theyhad been told.
21 Completados que foram os oito dias para ser circuncidado o menino, foi-lhe posto o nome de Jesus, como lhe tinha chamado o anjo, antes de ser concebido no seio materno.	21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, thename the angel had given him before his conception.
22 Concluídos os dias da sua purificação segundo a Lei de Moisés, levaram-no a Jerusalém para o apresentar ao Senhor,	22 And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up toJerusalem to present him to the Lord-
23 conforme o que está escrito na lei do Senhor: Todo primogênito do sexo masculino será consagrado ao Senhor {Ex 13,2};	23 observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to theLord-
24 e para oferecerem o sacrifício prescrito pela lei do Senhor, um par de rolas ou dois pombinhos.	24 and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.
25 Ora, havia em Jerusalém um homem chamado Simeão. Este homem, justo e piedoso, esperava a consolação de Israel, e o Espírito Santo estava nele.	25 Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he lookedforward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him.
26 Fora-lhe revelado pelo Espírito Santo que não morreria sem primeiro ver o Cristo do Senhor.	26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on theChrist of the Lord.
27 Impelido pelo Espírito Santo, foi ao templo. E tendo os pais apresentado o menino Jesus, para cumprirem a respeito dele os preceitos da lei,	27 Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to dofor him what the Law required,
28 tomou-o em seus braços e louvou a Deus nestes termos:	28 he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:
29 Agora, Senhor, deixai o vosso servo ir em paz, segundo a vossa palavra.	29 Now, Master, you are letting your servant go in peace as you promised;
30 Porque os meus olhos viram a vossa salvação	30 for my eyes have seen the salvation
31 que preparastes diante de todos os povos,	31 which you have made ready in the sight of the nations;
32 como luz para iluminar as nações, e para a glória de vosso povo de Israel.	32 a light of revelation for the gentiles and glory for your people Israel.
33 Seu pai e sua mãe estavam admirados das coisas que dele se diziam.	33 As the child's father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him,
34 Simeão abençoou-os e disse a Maria, sua mãe: Eis que este menino está destinado a ser uma causa de queda e de soerguimento para muitos homens em Israel, e a ser um sinal que provocará contradições,	34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fal and for the rise ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed-
35 a fim de serem revelados os pensamentos de muitos corações. E uma espada transpassará a tua alma.	35 and a sword wil pierce your soul too -- so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.'
36 Havia também uma profetisa chamada Ana, filha de Fanuel, da tribo de Aser; era de idade avançada.	36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was wel on inyears. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years
37 Depois de ter vivido sete anos com seu marido desde a sua virgindade, ficara viúva, e agora com oitenta e quatro anos não se apartava do templo, servindo a Deus noite e dia em jejuns e orações.	37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving Godnight and day with fasting and prayer.
38 Chegando ela à mesma hora, louvava a Deus e falava de Jesus a todos aqueles que em Jerusalém esperavam a libertação.	38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to al wholooked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.
39 Após terem observado tudo segundo a lei do Senhor, voltaram para a Galiléia, à sua cidade de Nazaré.	39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth.
40 O menino ia crescendo e se fortificava: estava cheio de sabedoria, e a graça de Deus repousava nele.	40 And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.
41 Seus pais iam todos os anos a Jerusalém para a festa da Páscoa.	41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.
42 Tendo ele atingido doze anos, subiram a Jerusalém, segundo o costume da festa.	42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual.
43 Acabados os dias da festa, quando voltavam, ficou o menino Jesus em Jerusalém, sem que os seus pais o percebessem.	43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind inJerusalem without his parents knowing it.
44 Pensando que ele estivesse com os seus companheiros de comitiva, andaram caminho de um dia e o buscaram entre os parentes e conhecidos.	44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day's journey that they went tolook for him among their relations and acquaintances.
45 Mas não o encontrando, voltaram a Jerusalém, à procura dele.	45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere.
46 Três dias depois o acharam no templo, sentado no meio dos doutores, ouvindo-os e interrogando-os.	46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listeningto them, and asking them questions;
47 Todos os que o ouviam estavam maravilhados da sabedoria de suas respostas.	47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intel igence and his replies.
48 Quando eles o viram, ficaram admirados. E sua mãe disse-lhe: Meu filho, que nos fizeste?! Eis que teu pai e eu andávamos à tua procura, cheios de aflição.	48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, 'My child, why have you donethis to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.'
49 Respondeu-lhes ele: Por que me procuráveis? Não sabíeis que devo ocupar-me das coisas de meu Pai?	49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?'
50 Eles, porém, não compreenderam o que ele lhes dissera.	50 But they did not understand what he meant.
51 Em seguida, desceu com eles a Nazaré e lhes era submisso. Sua mãe guardava todas estas coisas no seu coração.	51 He went down with them then and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother storedup al these things in her heart.
52 E Jesus crescia em estatura, em sabedoria e graça, diante de Deus e dos homens.	52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people.
