παροιμιαι σαλωμωντος υιου δαυιδ ος εβασιλευσεν εν ισραηλ1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,
γνωναι σοφιαν και παιδειαν νοησαι τε λογους φρονησεως2 in order to know wisdom and discipline,
δεξασθαι τε στροφας λογων νοησαι τε δικαιοσυνην αληθη και κριμα κατευθυνειν3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,
ινα δω ακακοις πανουργιαν παιδι δε νεω αισθησιν τε και εννοιαν4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.
τωνδε γαρ ακουσας σοφος σοφωτερος εσται ο δε νοημων κυβερνησιν κτησεται5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.
νοησει τε παραβολην και σκοτεινον λογον ρησεις τε σοφων και αινιγματα6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.
αρχη σοφιας φοβος θεου συνεσις δε αγαθη πασι τοις ποιουσιν αυτην ευσεβεια δε εις θεον αρχη αισθησεως σοφιαν δε και παιδειαν ασεβεις εξουθενησουσιν7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.
ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου και μη απωση θεσμους μητρος σου8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,
στεφανον γαρ χαριτων δεξη ση κορυφη και κλοιον χρυσεον περι σω τραχηλω9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.
υιε μη σε πλανησωσιν ανδρες ασεβεις μηδε βουληθης εαν παρακαλεσωσι σε λεγοντες10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.
ελθε μεθ' ημων κοινωνησον αιματος κρυψωμεν δε εις γην ανδρα δικαιον αδικως11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.
καταπιωμεν δε αυτον ωσπερ αδης ζωντα και αρωμεν αυτου την μνημην εκ γης12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit.
την κτησιν αυτου την πολυτελη καταλαβωμεθα πλησωμεν δε οικους ημετερους σκυλων13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.
τον δε σον κληρον βαλε εν ημιν κοινον δε βαλλαντιον κτησωμεθα παντες και μαρσιππιον εν γενηθητω ημιν14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”
μη πορευθης εν οδω μετ' αυτων εκκλινον δε τον ποδα σου εκ των τριβων αυτων15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.
οι γαρ ποδες αυτων εις κακιαν τρεχουσιν και ταχινοι του εκχεαι αιμα16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.
ου γαρ αδικως εκτεινεται δικτυα πτερωτοις17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.
αυτοι γαρ οι φονου μετεχοντες θησαυριζουσιν εαυτοις κακα η δε καταστροφη ανδρων παρανομων κακη18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.
αυται αι οδοι εισιν παντων των συντελουντων τα ανομα τη γαρ ασεβεια την εαυτων ψυχην αφαιρουνται19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.
σοφια εν εξοδοις υμνειται εν δε πλατειαις παρρησιαν αγει20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.
επ' ακρων δε τειχεων κηρυσσεται επι δε πυλαις δυναστων παρεδρευει επι δε πυλαις πολεως θαρρουσα λεγει21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:
οσον αν χρονον ακακοι εχωνται της δικαιοσυνης ουκ αισχυνθησονται οι δε αφρονες της υβρεως οντες επιθυμηται ασεβεις γενομενοι εμισησαν αισθησιν22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?
και υπευθυνοι εγενοντο ελεγχοις ιδου προησομαι υμιν εμης πνοης ρησιν διδαξω δε υμας τον εμον λογον23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.
επειδη εκαλουν και ουχ υπηκουσατε και εξετεινον λογους και ου προσειχετε24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.
αλλα ακυρους εποιειτε εμας βουλας τοις δε εμοις ελεγχοις ηπειθησατε25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.
τοιγαρουν καγω τη υμετερα απωλεια επιγελασομαι καταχαρουμαι δε ηνικα αν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.
και ως αν αφικηται υμιν αφνω θορυβος η δε καταστροφη ομοιως καταιγιδι παρη και οταν ερχηται υμιν θλιψις και πολιορκια η οταν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,
εσται γαρ οταν επικαλεσησθε με εγω δε ουκ εισακουσομαι υμων ζητησουσιν με κακοι και ουχ ευρησουσιν28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.
εμισησαν γαρ σοφιαν τον δε φοβον του κυριου ου προειλαντο29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;
ουδε ηθελον εμαις προσεχειν βουλαις εμυκτηριζον δε εμους ελεγχους30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.
τοιγαρουν εδονται της εαυτων οδου τους καρπους και της εαυτων ασεβειας πλησθησονται31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.
ανθ' ων γαρ ηδικουν νηπιους φονευθησονται και εξετασμος ασεβεις ολει32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.
ο δε εμου ακουων κατασκηνωσει επ' ελπιδι και ησυχασει αφοβως απο παντος κακου33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”
