LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
ετι δε προσθεις ιωβ ειπεν τω προοιμιω1 Job took up his theme anew and said;
τις αν με θειη κατα μηνα εμπροσθεν ημερων ων με ο θεος εφυλαξεν2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,
ως οτε ηυγει ο λυχνος αυτου υπερ κεφαλης μου οτε τω φωτι αυτου επορευομην εν σκοτει3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;
οτε ημην επιβριθων οδοις οτε ο θεος επισκοπην εποιειτο του οικου μου4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;
οτε ημην υλωδης λιαν κυκλω δε μου οι παιδες5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;
οτε εχεοντο μου αι οδοι βουτυρω τα δε ορη μου εχεοντο γαλακτι6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;
οτε εξεπορευομην ορθριος εν πολει εν δε πλατειαις ετιθετο μου ο διφρος7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-
ιδοντες με νεανισκοι εκρυβησαν πρεσβυται δε παντες εστησαν8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;
αδροι δε επαυσαντο λαλουντες δακτυλον επιθεντες επι στοματι9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;
οι δε ακουσαντες εμακαρισαν με και γλωσσα αυτων τω λαρυγγι αυτων εκολληθη10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
οτι ους ηκουσεν και εμακαρισεν με οφθαλμος δε ιδων με εξεκλινεν11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.
διεσωσα γαρ πτωχον εκ χειρος δυναστου και ορφανω ω ουκ ην βοηθος εβοηθησα12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;
ευλογια απολλυμενου επ' εμε ελθοι στομα δε χηρας με ευλογησεν13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.
δικαιοσυνην δε ενεδεδυκειν ημφιασαμην δε κριμα ισα διπλοιδι14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.
οφθαλμος ημην τυφλων πους δε χωλων15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;
εγω ημην πατηρ αδυνατων δικην δε ην ουκ ηδειν εξιχνιασα16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,
συνετριψα δε μυλας αδικων εκ δε μεσου των οδοντων αυτων αρπαγμα εξεσπασα17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.
ειπα δε η ηλικια μου γηρασει ωσπερ στελεχος φοινικος πολυν χρονον βιωσω18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.
η ριζα μου διηνοικται επι υδατος και δροσος αυλισθησεται εν τω θερισμω μου19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.
η δοξα μου καινη μετ' εμου και το τοξον μου εν χειρι αυτου πορευσεται20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"
εμου ακουσαντες προσεσχον εσιωπησαν δε επι τη εμη βουλη21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.
επι δε τω εμω ρηματι ου προσεθεντο περιχαρεις δε εγινοντο οποταν αυτοις ελαλουν22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.
ωσπερ γη διψωσα προσδεχομενη τον υετον ουτως ουτοι την εμην λαλιαν23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.
εαν γελασω προς αυτους ου μη πιστευσωσιν και φως του προσωπου μου ουκ απεπιπτεν24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;
εξελεξαμην οδον αυτων και εκαθισα αρχων και κατεσκηνουν ωσει βασιλευς εν μονοζωνοις ον τροπον παθεινους παρακαλων25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.
