VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et inde exsurgens venit in fines Judææ ultra Jordanem : et conveniunt iterum turbæ ad eum : et sicut consueverat, iterum docebat illos.1 After leaving there, he came into the territory of Judaea and Transjordan. And again crowds gatheredround him, and again he taught them, as his custom was.
Et accedentes pharisæi interrogabant eum : Si licet viro uxorem dimittere : tentantes eum.2 Some Pharisees approached him and asked, 'Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?' They wereputting him to the test.
At ille respondens, dixit eis : Quid vobis præcepit Moyses ?3 He answered them, 'What did Moses command you?'
Qui dixerunt : Moyses permisit libellum repudii scribere, et dimittere.4 They replied, 'Moses al owed us to draw up a writ of dismissal in cases of divorce.'
Quibus respondens Jesus, ait : Ad duritiam cordis vestri scripsit vobis præceptum istud :5 Then Jesus said to them, 'It was because you were so hard hearted that he wrote this commandmentfor you.
ab initio autem creaturæ masculum et feminam fecit eos Deus.6 But from the beginning of creation he made them male and female.
Propter hoc relinquet homo patrem suum et matrem, et adhærebit ad uxorem suam :7 This is why a man leaves his father and mother,
et erunt duo in carne una. Itaque jam non sunt duo, sed una caro.8 and the two become one flesh. They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh.
Quod ergo Deus conjunxit, homo non separet.9 So then, what God has united, human beings must not divide.'
Et in domo iterum discipuli ejus de eodem interrogaverunt eum.10 Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this,
Et ait illis : Quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, et aliam duxerit, adulterium committit super eam.11 and he said to them, 'Whoever divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her.
Et si uxor dimiserit virum suum, et alii nupserit, mœchatur.
And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too.'
Et offerebant illi parvulos ut tangeret illos. Discipuli autem comminabantur offerentibus.13 People were bringing little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples scolded them,
Quos cum videret Jesus, indigne tulit, et ait illis : Sinite parvulos venire ad me, et ne prohibueritis eos : talium enim est regnum Dei.14 but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the little children come to me; do notstop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.
Amen dico vobis : Quisquis non receperit regnum Dei velut parvulus, non intrabit in illud.15 In truth I tel you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child wil never enterit.'
Et complexans eos, et imponens manus super illos, benedicebat eos.
Then he embraced them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing.
Et cum egressus esset in viam, procurrens quidam genu flexo ante eum, rogabat eum : Magister bone, quid faciam ut vitam æternam percipiam ?17 He was setting out on a journey when a man ran up, knelt before him and put this question to him,'Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
Jesus autem dixit ei : Quid me dicis bonum ? nemo bonus, nisi unus Deus.18 Jesus said to him, 'Why do you cal me good? No one is good but God alone.
Præcepta nosti : ne adulteres, ne occidas, ne fureris, ne falsum testimonium dixeris, ne fraudem feceris, honora patrem tuum et matrem.19 You know the commandments: You shal not kil ; You shal not commit adultery; You shal not steal; You shal not give false witness; You shal not defraud; Honour your father and mother.'
At ille respondens, ait illi : Magister, hæc omnia observavi a juventute mea.20 And he said to him, 'Master, I have kept al these since my earliest days.'
Jesus autem intuitus eum, dilexit eum, et dixit ei : Unum tibi deest : vade, quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo : et veni, sequere me.21 Jesus looked steadily at him and he was fil ed with love for him, and he said, 'You need to do onething more. Go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you wil have treasure in heaven;then come, fol ow me.'
Qui contristatus in verbo, abiit mœrens : erat enim habens multas possessiones.22 But his face fel at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.
Et circumspiciens Jesus, ait discipulis suis : Quam difficile qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei introibunt !23 Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to enter thekingdom of God!'
Discipuli autem obstupescebant in verbis ejus. At Jesus rursus respondens ait illis : Filioli, quam difficile est, confidentes in pecuniis, in regnum Dei introire !24 The disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them, 'howhard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
Facilius est camelum per foramen acus transire, quam divitem intrare in regnum Dei.25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter thekingdom of God.'
Qui magis admirabantur, dicentes ad semetipsos : Et quis potest salvus fieri ?26 They were more astonished than ever, saying to one another, 'In that case, who can be saved?'
Et intuens illos Jesus, ait : Apud homines impossibile est, sed non apud Deum : omnia enim possibilia sunt apud Deum.
Jesus gazed at them and said, 'By human resources it is impossible, but not for God: because forGod everything is possible.'
Et cœpit ei Petrus dicere : Ecce nos dimisimus omnia, et secuti sumus te.28 Peter took this up. 'Look,' he said to him, 'we have left everything and fol owed you.'
Respondens Jesus, ait : Amen dico vobis : Nemo est qui reliquerit domum, aut fratres, aut sorores, aut patrem, aut matrem, aut filios, aut agros propter me et propter Evangelium,29 Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel
qui non accipiat centies tantum, nunc in tempore hoc : domos, et fratres, et sorores, et matres, et filios, et agros, cum persecutionibus, et in sæculo futuro vitam æternam.30 who wil not receive a hundred times as much, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and land-- and persecutions too -- now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life.
Multi autem erunt primi novissimi, et novissimi primi.
Many who are first wil be last, and the last, first.'
Erant autem in via ascendentes Jerosolymam : et præcedebat illos Jesus, et stupebant : et sequentes timebant. Et assumens iterum duodecim, cœpit illis dicere quæ essent ei eventura.32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem; Jesus was walking on ahead of them; they were in adaze, and those who fol owed were apprehensive. Once more taking the Twelve aside he began to tel themwhat was going to happen to him,
Quia ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et senioribus, et damnabunt eum morte, et tradent eum gentibus :33 'Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man is about to be handed over to the chiefpriests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and wil hand him over to the gentiles,
et illudent ei, et conspuent eum, et flagellabunt eum, et interficient eum : et tertia die resurget.
who wil mock him and spit at him and scourge him and put him to death; and after three days he wilrise again.'
Et accedunt ad eum Jacobus et Joannes filii Zebedæi, dicentes : Magister, volumus ut quodcumque petierimus, facias nobis.35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him. 'Master,' they said to him, 'We want you todo us a favour.'
At ille dixit eis : Quid vultis ut faciam vobis ?36 He said to them, 'What is it you want me to do for you?'
Et dixerunt : Da nobis ut unus ad dexteram tuam, et alius ad sinistram tuam sedeamus in gloria tua.37 They said to him, 'Al ow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.'
Jesus autem ait eis : Nescitis quid petatis : potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibo, aut baptismo, quo ego baptizor, baptizari ?38 But Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I shaldrink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I shal be baptised?'
At illi dixerunt ei : Possumus. Jesus autem ait eis : Calicem quidem, quem ego bibo, bibetis ; et baptismo, quo ego baptizor, baptizabimini :39 They replied, 'We can.' Jesus said to them, 'The cup that I shal drink you shal drink, and with thebaptism with which I shal be baptised you shal be baptised,
sedere autem ad dexteram meam, vel ad sinistram, non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est.40 but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whomthey have been al otted.'
Et audientes decem, cœperunt indignari de Jacobo et Joanne.41 When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John,
Jesus autem vocans eos, ait illis : Scitis quia hi, qui videntur principari gentibus, dominantur eis : et principes eorum potestatem habent ipsorum.42 so Jesus cal ed them to him and said to them, 'You know that among the gentiles those they cal theirrulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt.
Non ita est autem in vobis, sed quicumque voluerit fieri major, erit vester minister :43 Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be yourservant,
et quicumque voluerit in vobis primus esse, erit omnium servus.44 and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all.
Nam et Filius hominis non venit ut ministraretur ei, sed ut ministraret, et daret animam suam redemptionem pro multis.
For the Son of man himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.'
Et veniunt Jericho : et proficiscente eo de Jericho, et discipulis ejus, et plurima multitudine, filius Timæi Bartimæus cæcus, sedebat juxta viam mendicans.46 They reached Jericho; and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus -- thatis, the son of Timaeus -- a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road.
Qui cum audisset quia Jesus Nazarenus est, cœpit clamare, et dicere : Jesu fili David, miserere mei.47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and cry out, 'Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me.'
Et comminabantur ei multi ut taceret. At ille multo magis clamabat : Fili David, miserere mei.48 And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he only shouted al the louder, 'Son ofDavid, have pity on me.'
Et stans Jesus præcepit illum vocari. Et vocant cæcum, dicentes ei : Animæquior esto : surge, vocat te.49 Jesus stopped and said, 'Cal him here.' So they cal ed the blind man over. 'Courage,' they said, 'getup; he is calling you.'
Qui projecto vestimento suo exiliens, venit ad eum.50 So throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus.
Et respondens Jesus dixit illi : Quid tibi vis faciam ? Cæcus autem dixit ei : Rabboni, ut videam.51 Then Jesus spoke, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said to him, 'Rabbuni, let mesee again.'
Jesus autem ait illi : Vade, fides tua te salvum fecit. Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur eum in via.52 Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has saved you.' And at once his sight returned and he fol owed himalong the road.
