1 Quando essi ebbero, cessato di parlare, Oloferne, oltre modo sdegnato, disse ad Achior:	1 When the noise of the crowd surrounding the council had subsided, Holofernes, commander-in-chief of the Assyrian army, said to Achior, in the presence of the whole throng of coastland peoples, of the Moabites, and of the Ammonite mercenaries:
2 « Giacchè da profeta ci hai detto che il popolo d'Israele è difeso dal suo Dio, per farti vedere che non v'è altro Dio fuor di Nabucodonosor,	2 "Who are you, Achior, to prophesy among us as you have done today, and to tell us not to fight against the Israelites because their God protects them? What god is there beside Nebuchadnezzar? He will send his force and destroy them from the face of the earth. Their God will not save them;
3 quando li avremo colpiti come un sol uomo, anche tu perirai con loro sotto la spada degli Assiri: tutto Israele andrà teco in perdizione,	3 but we, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, will strike them down as one man, for they will be unable to withstand the force of our cavalry.
4 e tu saprai per esperienza che Nabucodonosor è il signore di tutta la terra, quando la spada dei miei soldati trapasserà i tuoi fianchi, quando senza respiro cadrai trafitto tra i feriti d'Israele, e sarai con essi sterminato.	4 We will overwhelm them with it, and the mountains shall be drunk with their blood, and their plains filled with their corpses. Not a trace of them shall survive our attack: they shall utterly perish, says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of all the earth; for he has spoken, and his words shall not remain unfulfilled.
5 Or dunque, se credi vera la tua profezia, il tuo volto cessi di esser abbattuto, il pallor che copre la tua faccia sparisca, se pensi che queste mie parole non possano compirsi;	5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, for saying these things in a moment of perversity you shall not see my face after today, until I have taken revenge on this race of people from Egypt.
6 e affinchè tu sappia che proverai con essi ciò che io dico, ecco fin da questo momento tu sarai associato a questo popolo in modo che, quando essi riceveranno i giusti castighi della mia spada, tu soggiaccia con essi alla vendetta ».	6 Then at my return, the sword of my army or the spear of my servants will pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their slain.
7 Allora Oloferne diede ai suoi servi l'ordine di prendere Achior, di condurlo a Betulia e di consegnarlo nelle mani dei figli d'Israele.	7 My servants will now conduct you to the mountain region, and leave you at one of the towns along the ascent.
8 I servi d'Oloferne, preso Achior, si posero in cammino per la pianura; ma quando furono vicini ai monti uscirono contro di loro dei frombolieri.	8 You shall not die till you are destroyed together with them.
9 Ed essi, ripiegando verso un lato del monte, legarono Achior mani e piedi a un albero, e, lasciatolo così legato con funi, se ne tornarono al loro signore.	9 If you still cherish the hope that they will not be taken, then there is no need for you to be downcast. I have spoken, and my words shall not prove false in any respect."
10 I figli d'Israele, scesi da Betulia, andarono a lui, lo sciolsero, lo condussero a Betulia, e, postolo in mezzo al popolo, gli domandarono perchè gli Assiri l'avessero lasciato legato in tal maniera.	10 Then Holofernes ordered the servants who were standing by in his tent to seize Achior, conduct him to Bethulia, and hand him over to the Israelites.
11 In quel luogo erano allora i principi Ozia figlio di Mica, della tribù di Simeone, e Carmi, detto anche Gotoniel.	11 So the servants took him in custody and brought him out of the camp into the plain. From there they led him into the mountain region till they reached the springs below Bethulia.
12 Achior, in mezzo agli anziani e davanti a tutti riferì quanto aveva risposto alle interrogazioni. D'Oloferne, che la gente d'Oloferne aveva voluto ucciderlo per ciò che aveva detto,	12 When the men of the city saw them, they seized their weapons and ran out of the city to the crest of the ridge; and all the slingers blocked the ascent of Holofernes' servants by hurling stones upon them.
13 e che lo stesso Oloferne sdegnato aveva dato ordine di consegnarlo nelle mani degli Israeliti, perchè vinti i figli d'Israele, voleva far morire fra i supplizi lo stesso Achior, avendo egli detto: « Il Dio del cielo è loro difensore ».	13 So they took cover below the mountain, where they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the mountain; then they returned to their lord.
14 Quando Achior ebbe finito di esporre queste cose, tutto il popolo, prostrato colla faccia per terra, adorò il Signore, e tutti insieme con gemiti e pianti innalzaron unanimi le loro preghiere al Signore,	14 The Israelites came down to him from their city, loosed him, and brought him into Bethulia. They haled him before the rulers of the city,
15 dicendo: « Signore Dio del cielo e della terra, mira la loro superbia e guarda la nostra umiliazione, rivolgiti alla faccia dei tuoi santi, e mostra che non abbandoni quelli che confidano in te e umili! quelli che confidano in se stessi e si gloriano della loro potenza ».	15 who in those days were Uzziah, son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris, son of Gothoniel, and Charmis, son of Melchiel.
16 Cessato il pianto e finita la preghiera che aveva durato tutto il giorno, consolarono Achior,	16 They then convened all the elders of the city; and all their young men, as well as the women, gathered in haste at the place of assembly. They placed Achior in the center of the throng, and Uzziah questioned him about what had happened.
17 dicendo: « Il Dio dei padri nostri, di cui hai celebrata la potenza, ti darà invece la sorte di veder la loro rovina;	17 He replied by giving them an account of what was said in the council of Holofernes, and of all his own words among the Assyrian officers, and of all the boasting threats of Holofernes against the house of Israel.
18 e quando il Signore nostro Dio avrà data questa libertà ai suoi servi, sia Dio anche con te in mezzo a noi, in modo che tu con tutti i tuoi viva a tuo beneplacito insieme a noi ».	18 At this the people fell prostrate and worshiped God; and they cried out:
19 Poi, finita l'adunanza, Ozia lo accolse in casa sua e gli offrì una gran cena,	19 "Lord, God of heaven, behold their arrogance! Have pity on the lowliness of our people, and look with favor this day on those who are consecrated to you."
20 a cui invitò gli anziani. Essendo finito il digiuno, mangiarono assieme,	20 Then they reassured Achior and praised him highly.
21 poi, radunato tutto il popolo, pregarono tutta la notte nel luogo dell'adunanza, chiedendo aiuto al Dio d'Israele.	21 Uzziah brought him from the assembly to his home, where he gave a banquet for the elders. That whole night they called upon the God of Israel for help.
