| 3 Abia cominciò la guerra con valorosissimi combattenti, con quattrocento mila uomini scelti; Geroboamo ordinò in battaglia contro di lui ottocento mila uomini, pure scelti e fortissimi in guerra. | 3 Abijah went out to battle having an army of valiant men of war, four hundred thousand picked men; and Jeroboam drew up his line of battle against him with eight hundred thousand picked mighty warriors. |
| 4 Abia, fermatosi sul monte Semeron, che è in Efraim, disse: « O Geroboamo, ascolta con tutto Israele, | 4 Then Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, "Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel! |

| 7 A lui s'unirono uomini da nulla, figli di Belial, e prevalsero contro il figlio di Salomone, Roboamo, il quale, inesperto e di cuor pauroso, non potè loro resistere. | 7 and certain worthless scoundrels gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and irresolute and could not withstand them. |
| 8 Or dunque credete di poter resistere al regno del Signore, da lui posseduto per mezzo dei figli di David, voi che avete una gran moltitudine di popolo e i vitelli d'oro che Geroboamo vi ha fatti per dèi, | 8 "And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods. |
| 9 voi che, cacciati i figli d'Aronne, sacerdoti del Signore e i leviti, vi siete creati dei sacerdoti come tutti i popoli della terra e tali che chiunque viene a consacrar la sua mano con un giovenco e sette arieti diventa sacerdote di quelli che non son dèi? | 9 Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods. |
| 10 Ma il nostro Dio è il Signore: noi non l'abbandoniamo: al Signore servono i sacerdoti della stirpe d'Aronne, e i leviti stanno nei loro uffici. | 10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the LORD who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. |
| 11 Essi offrono olocausti al Signore ogni giorno, mattina e sera, e timiami composti secondo il prescritto della legge. Si espongono i pani sopra una mensa mondissima; abbiamo presso di noi il candelabro d'oro colle sue lampade che s'accendono sempre la sera. Noi osserviamo i precetti del Signore Dio nostro che voi avete abbandonato: | 11 They offer to the LORD every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out the showbread on the table of pure gold, and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may burn every evening; for we keep the charge of the LORD our God, but you have forsaken him. |
| 12 nel nostro esercito il capo è Dio: i suoi sacerdoti dàn fiato alle trombe e le suonano contro di voi. Figli d'Israele, vogliate combattere contro il Signore Dio dei padri vostri, perchè ciò non vi conviene ». | 12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for you cannot succeed." |
| 13 Mentre egli così parlava, Roboamo, di dietro, gli tendeva insidie; mentre egli stava in faccia ai nemici, Geroboamo accerchiava col suo esercito Giuda che non se ne accorgeva. | 13 Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come on them from behind; thus his troops were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. |
| 14 Giuda, voltosi in dietro e accortosi d'essere assalito di fronte e alle spalle, gridò al Signore; i sacerdoti diedero fiato alle trombe; | 14 And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets. |
| 15 tutti gli uomini di Giuda diedero un grido. Al loro grido, Dio atterrì Geroboamo e tutto Israele che si trovava di fronte ad Abia e Giuda. | 15 Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. |
| 16 I figli d'Israele fuggirono davanti a Giuda: Dio li abbandonò nelle mani di lui. | 16 The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. |
| 17 Abia e il suo popolo li batterono con grande sconfitta che fece cader feriti dalla parte d'Israele cinquecento mila uomini di valore. | 17 Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell slain of Israel five hundred thousand picked men. |
| 18 I figli d'Israele furono in quel tempo umiliati, e i figli di Giuda ripresero grandissimo vigore, per avere sperato nel Signore Dio dei loro padri. | 18 Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD, the God of their fathers. |
| 19 Abia inseguì Geroboamo che fuggiva e delle sue città prese Betel e le sue dipendenze, Iesana con le sue dipendenze, Efron con le sue dipendenze. | 19 And Abijah pursued Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jeshanah with its villages and Ephron with its villages. |
| 20 Geroboamo non potè più resistere nei giorni d'Abia, e, colpito da Dio, morì. | 20 Jeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abijah; and the LORD smote him, and he died. |
| 21 Abia, consolidato il suo regno, prese quattordici mogli e generò ventidue figli e sedici figlie. | 21 But Abijah grew mighty. And he took fourteen wives, and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. |
| 22 Il rimanente delle gesta d'Abia, la sua condotta, le sue opere, è scritto con somma diligenza nel libro di Addo profeta. | 22 The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo. |
