LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 "Può forse un uomo essere utile a Dio, mentre il saggio giova solo a se stesso?	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 Che interesse ha l'Onnipotente, che tu abbia ragione? O che cosa ci guadagna, se la tua condotta è perfetta?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 E' forse a motivo della tua pietà che ti riprende e ti convoca in giudizio?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 Non è piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue innumerevoli colpe?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Senza motivo infatti prendevi i pegni dei tuoi fratelli e strappavi le vesti agli ignudi.	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 Non davi da bere all'assetato e rifiutavi il pane all'affamato.	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 Ai prepotenti cedevi la terra, e vi si istallavano i tuoi favoriti.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Le vedove le rimandavi a mani vuote e spezzavi le braccia degli orfani.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Perciò ti circondano i lacci e sei turbato da un repentino spavento,	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 oppure un'oscurità non ti fa vedere, e una piena d'acqua ti sommerge.	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Non è forse Dio nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda il vertice delle stelle: come sono alte!	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 E tu dici: "Che cosa ne sa Dio? Può forse giudicare dietro le nubi?	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede, mentre cammina sulla volta dei cieli".	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 Vuoi tu seguire la via antica già battuta da uomini perversi,	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 che furono spazzati via prima del tempo, quando un fiume travolse le loro fondamenta?	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 Dicevano a Dio: "Allontànati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente?".	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 Eppure egli aveva colmato di beni le loro case, ma essi lo escludevano dai loro piani perversi.	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 I giusti vedono ciò e si rallegrano, l'innocente si beffa di loro:	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 sì, certo, è stata annientata la loro fortuna, e il fuoco ne ha divorato gli avanzi!	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Orsù, riconciliati con lui e fa' la pace; così riavrai la felicità.	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 Accetta dalla sua bocca l'istruzione e imprimiti nel cuore le sue parole.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se ritorni all'Onnipotente, sarai ristabilito; allontana l'ingiustizia dalla tua dimora;	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 considera l'oro come polvere, e il metallo di Ofir come i sassi del torrente.	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 Allora sarà l'Onnipotente il tuo oro e argento brillante per te.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Allora, sì, troverai delizia nell'Onnipotente e verso Dio leverai la faccia.	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 Quando lo supplicherai, egli ti esaudirà e adempirai i tuoi voti.	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 Se deciderai una cosa, ti riuscirà e la luce brillerà sul tuo cammino.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Poiché egli umilia l'alterigia del superbo e salva coloro che si umiliano.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 Egli libera l'innocente, e tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani".	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
