Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.1 Ma il primo giorno della settimana, la mattina prestissimo, andarono al sepolcro a portare gli aromi preparati.
And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.2 E trovarono ribaltata la pietra del sepolcro.
And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 Ma, entrate, non trovarono il corpo del Signore Gesù.
And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.4 E mentre stavano perplesse di ciò, ecco apparir loro duo personaggi in veste sfolgorante, i quali,
Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?5 siccome esse erano impaurite e chinavano il viso a terra, loro dissero: Perchè cercate il vivente tra i morti?
He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,6 Non è più qui; è risorto; ricordatevi di quanto vi disse quando era ancora in Galilea,
saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”7 quando diceva: E' necessario che il Figlio dell'uomo sia dato nelle mani dei peccatori, sia crocifìsso o risorga il terzo giorno.
And they called to mind his words.8 Ed esse ricordavano le parole di lui.
And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.9 E tornate dal sepolcro raccontarono tutte queste cose agli undici e a tutti gli altri.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.10 Ed erano Maria Maddalena, Giovanna, Maria di Giacomo, ed altre che erano con loro, quelle che dicevan queste cose agli Apostoli.
But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.11 Ma questi discorsi parvero a loro vaneggiamenti e non le credettero.
But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.12 Ma Pietro, levatosi, corse al sepolcro, ed essendosi chinato a guardare, non vide che i soli lenzuoli per terra, e se ne andò, maravigliandosi tra se dell'accaduto.
And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.13 Ed ecco che due di loro se ne andavano quello stesso giorno ad un villaggio detto Emmaus, distante da Gerusalemme sessanta stadi.
And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.14 E ragionavano tra loro di quanto era accaduto.
And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.15 E avvenne che, mentre ragionavano e discutevano tra loro, Gesù stesso, avvicinatosi, si mise a far viaggio con essi.
But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.16 Ma i loro occhi non potevano conoscerlo.
And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”17 Ed egli domandò loro: Che discorsi sono questi che fate per la strada? E perchè siete così tristi?
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”18 Ed uno di loro, chiamato Cleofa, rispose: Tu solo sei cosi forestiero a Gerusalemme da non sapere quanto in questi giorni v'è accaduto?
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.19 Ed egli a loro: Quali cose? E gli dissero: TI fatto di Gesù Nazareno, che fu profeta potente, in opere e parole, dinanzi a Dio e a tutto il popolo;
And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.20 e come i sommi sacerdoti ed i nostri capi l'han fatto condannare a morte e crocifiggere.
But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.21 Or noi speravamo che fosse per redimere Israele; invece, oltre a tutto questo, oggi è il terzo giorno da che tali cose sono avvenute.
Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,22 Veramente alcune donne, delle nostre, ci hanno maravigliati, perchè essendo andate la mattina presto al sepolcro,
and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.23 e non avendo trovato il corpo di lui, son venute a dirci d'aver avuta anche una visione di Angeli che lo dicono vivo.
And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”24 Ed alcuni dei nostri sono andati al sepolcro, ove han riscontrato quanto avevan detto le donne, ma lui non l'han trovato.
And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!25 Allora Gesù disse loro: O stolti e tardi di cuore a credere tutte queste cose predette dai profeti!
Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”26 Non doveva forse il Cristo patire tali cose, e così entrare nella sua gloria?
And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.27 E cominciando da Mosè e da tutti i profeti, spiegava loro in tutte le Scritture ciò che a lui si riferiva.
And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.28 E come furono vicini al villaggio dove andavano, egli fece vista di andare più oltre.
But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.29 Ma essi lo costrinsero a restare, dicendo: Rimani con noi, cliè si fa sera ed il giorno è già declinato. Ed entrò con essi.
And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.30 Ed avvenne che, messosi con loro a tavola, prese il pane, lo benedisse e lo spezzò e lo porse ad essi.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.31 Allora s'aprirono i loro occhi e lo riconobbero; ma egli sparì dai loro sguardi:
And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”32 e quelli dissero tra loro: Non ci ardeva forse il cuore nel petto, mentr'egli per la strada ci parlava e ci interpretava le Scritture?
And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,33 Ed alzatisi in quell'istante tornarono a Gerusalemme; e trovarono radunati gli undici e gli altri che eran con loro,
saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”34 i quali dicevano: Il Signore è veramente risorto ed è apparso a Simone:
And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.35 Ed essi pure narrarono quanto loro era accaduto per la strada, e come l'avessero riconosciuto quando aveva spezzato il pane.
Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”36 E, mentre essi discorrevano di queste cose, Gesù apparve in mezzo a loro e disse: La pace sia con voi: son io, non temete.
Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.37 Ma essi, turbati e atterriti, credevano di vedere uno spirito.
And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?38 E disse loro: Perchè siete turbati e dei dubbi sorgon nel vostro cuore?
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”39 Guardate le mie mani e i miei piedi: son proprio io: palpatemi e guardatemi; perchè uno spirito non ha carne ed ossa, come vedete aver io.
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40 Detto ciò, mostrò loro le mani ed i piedi.
Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41 Ma siccome ancora non credevano ed erano stupiti per la gioia, disse loro: Avete qui nulla da mangiare?
And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.42 E gli offrirono un pezzo di pesce arrostito e un favo di miele.
And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.43 E, dopo aver mangiato davanti ad essi, prese gli avanzi e li diede loro.
And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”44 Poi disse loro: Questi sono i ragionamenti che vi ho fatto quando ero ancora con voi; che cioè bisognava fosse adempito quanto sta scritto di me nella legge di Mosè e nei profeti e nei salmi.
Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.45 Allora aprì loro la mente e per intendere le Scritture:
And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,46 e disse loro: Così sta scritto: che il Cristo doveva patire e risorgere da morte il terzo giorno;
and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 e che doveva predicarsi in nome di lui la penitenza e la remissione dei peccati a tutte le genti, cominciando da Gerusalemme.
And you are witnesses of these things.48 Or voi siete testimoni di queste cose.
And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”49 Ed ecco, io mando a voi il promesso del Padre mio, e voi restate in città finché non siate rivestiti di potenza dall'alto.
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50 Poi li condusse fuori, verso Befania, e, alzate le mani, li benedisse.
And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.51 Ed avvenne che, mentre li benediceva, si partì da loro ed ascese al cielo.
And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52 Ed essi, adoratolo, tornarono a Gerusalemme con grande allegrezza,
And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.53 e stavan di continuo nel tempio a lodare e benedire Dio. Amen.
