Luke 24

1 Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.	1 But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
2 And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.	2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb;
3 And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.	3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.	4 While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them.
5 Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?	5 They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead?
6 He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,	6 He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee,
7 saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”	7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day."
8 And they called to mind his words.	8 And they remembered his words.
9 And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.	9 Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the eleven and to all the others.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.	10 The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the apostles,
11 But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.	11 but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them.
12 But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.	12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down, and saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had happened.
13 And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.	13 Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
14 And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.	14 and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
15 And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.	15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
16 But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.	16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
17 And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”	17 He asked them, "What are you discussing as you walk along?" They stopped, looking downcast.
18 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”	18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?"
19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.	19 And he replied to them, "What sort of things?" They said to him, "The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20 And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.	20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.
21 But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.	21 But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place.
22 Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,	22 Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning
23 and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.	23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.
24 And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”	24 Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see."
25 And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!	25 And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
26 Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”	26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?"
27 And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.	27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.
28 And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.	28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
29 But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.	29 But they urged him, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
30 And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.	30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.	31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”	32 Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?"
33 And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,	33 So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them
34 saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”	34 who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!"
35 And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.	35 Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
36 Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”	36 While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."
37 Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.	37 But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
38 And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?	38 Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?
39 See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”	39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.	40 And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”	41 While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
42 And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.	42 They gave him a piece of baked fish;
43 And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.	43 he took it and ate it in front of them.
44 And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”	44 He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."
45 Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.	45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.
46 And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,	46 And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day
47 and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.	47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 And you are witnesses of these things.	48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”	49 And (behold) I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.	50 Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.
51 And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.	51 As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
52 And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.	52 They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53 And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.	53 and they were continually in the temple praising God.
