Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.1 On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.
And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.2 They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,
And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.4 As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.
Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?5 Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?
He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,6 He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:
saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”7 that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'
And they called to mind his words.8 And they remembered his words.
And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.9 And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.10 The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,
But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.11 but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.
But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.12 Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.
And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.13 Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,
And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.14 and they were talking together about al that had happened.
And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.15 And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;
But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.16 but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.
And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”17 He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”18 Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.19 He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;
And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.20 and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.
But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.21 Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;
Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,22 and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,
and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.23 and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.
And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'
And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!25 Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!
Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'
And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.27 Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.
And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.28 When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;
But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.29 but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.30 Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.31 And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.
And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”32 Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'
And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,33 They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,
saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”34 who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'
And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.35 Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.
Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”36 They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'
Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.37 In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.
And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?38 But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”39 See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40 And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.
Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41 Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'
And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.42 And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,
And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.43 which he took and ate before their eyes.
And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”44 Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'
Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.45 He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,46 and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,
and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.48 You are witnesses to this.
And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”49 'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50 Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.
And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.51 Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.
And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52 They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;
And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.53 and they were continually in the Temple praising God.
