Job 37

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
At this, my heart became frightened, and it has been moved from its place.1 At this my heart trembles and leaps out of its place,
Pay close attention to the alarm of his voice and to the sound that proceeds from his mouth.2 To hear his angry voice as it rumbles forth from his mouth!
He beholds everything under the heavens, and his light reaches beyond the ends of the earth.3 Everywhere under the heavens he sends it, with his lightning, to the ends of the earth.
After this, a noise will sound; he will thunder with the voice of his greatness, and it will not be tracked down, yet his voice will be obeyed.4 Again his voice roars-- the majestic sound of his thunder.
God will thunder with his voice miraculously, for he performs great and unsearchable things.5 He does great things beyond our knowing; wonders past our searching out.
He commands the snow to descend on earth, and the winter rains, and the shower of his strength.6 For he says to the snow, "Fall to the earth"; likewise to his heavy, drenching rain.
He signs the hand of all men, so that each one may know his works.7 He shuts up all mankind indoors;
The beast will enter his hiding-place, and he will remain in his cave.8 the wild beasts take to cover and remain quietly in their dens.
From the interior, a storm will come forth, and a cold winter from the north.9 Out of its chamber comes forth the tempest; from the north winds, the cold.
As God breathes out, frost forms, and the waters are poured forth very widely again.10 With his breath God brings the frost, and the broad waters become congealed.
Crops desire clouds, and the clouds scatter their light.11 With hail, also, the clouds are laden, as they scatter their flashes of light.
It shines all around, wherever the will of him that governs them will lead, to anywhere he will command, over the whole face of the earth,12 He it is who changes their rounds, according to his plans, in their task upon the surface of the earth,
whether in one tribe, or in his own region, or in whatever place of his mercy that he will order them to be found.13 whether for punishment or mercy, as he commands.
Listen to these things, Job. Stand up and consider the wonders of God.14 Hearken to this, O Job! Stand and consider the wondrous works of God!
Do you know when God ordered the rains, so as to show the light of his clouds?15 Do you know how God lays his commands upon them, and makes the light shine forth from his clouds?
Do you know the great paths of the clouds, and the perfect sciences?16 Do you know how the clouds are banked, the wondrous work of him who is perfect in knowledge?
Are not your garments hot, when the south wind blows across the land?17 You, whom the streams of water fail when a calm from the south comes over the land,
Perhaps you have made the heavens with him, which are very solid, as if they had been cast from brass.18 Do you spread out with him the firmament of the skies, hard as a brazen mirror?
Reveal to us what we should say to him, for, of course, we are wrapped in darkness.19 Teach us then what we shall say to him; we cannot, for the darkness, make our plea.
Who will explain to him the things that I am saying? Even while a man is still speaking, he will be devoured.20 Will he be told about it when I speak, or when a man says he is being destroyed?
Although they do not see the light, the air will be thickened suddenly into clouds, and the wind, passing by, will drive them away.21 Nay, rather, it is as the light which men see not while it is obscured among the clouds, till the wind comes by and sweeps the clouds away.
Riches arrive from the north, and fearful praise reaches out to God.22 From the North the splendor comes, surrounding God's awesome majesty!
We are not worthy to be able to find him. Great in strength, great in judgment, great in justice: he is indescribable.23 The Almighty! we cannot discover him, pre-eminent in power and judgment; his great justice owes no one an accounting.
Therefore, men will fear him, and all those who seem to themselves to be wise, will not dare to contemplate him.24 Therefore men revere him, though none can see him, however wise their hearts.
