1 Or i figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad aveano molti bestiami, e un capitale immenso in giumenti. Eavendo veduto, come le terre di Jazer e di Galaad erano atte a nutrir animali.	1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,
2 Si presentarono a Mosè, e ad Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, e a' principi del popolo, e dissero:	2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,
3 Ataroth, e Dibon, e Jazer, e Nemra, Hesebon, ed Eleale, e Saban, e Nebo, e Beon,	3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,
4 Terre, che il Signore ha domate per mano de' figliuoli d'Israele, sono un paese grassissimopel pascolo degli animali: e noi tuoi servi abbiamo molti bestiami;	4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.
5 E ti preghiamo che se abbiam trovato grazia dinanzi a te, tu lo dia a noi tuoi servi pernostra possessione, e non ci facci passare il Giordano.	5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'
6 Rispose Mosè: Anderanno eglino i vostri fratelli a combattere, e voi starete qui a sedere?	6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?
7 Per qual motivo disanimate voi i figliuoli d'Israele a segno, che non abbian coraggio diandare nel paese, che il Signore vuol dare ad essi?	7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?
8 Non fecer eglino altrettanto i padri vostri, allorché io da Cadesbarne mandai ad esaminareil paese?	8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,
9 Ed eglino essendo arrivati fino alla valle del Grappolo, girato avendo tutto il paese,disanimarono i figliuoli d'Israele, perché non entrassero nella terra assegnata loro dalSignore.	9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.
10 Onde irato con essi giurò, e disse:	10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,
11 Questi uomini usciti dall'Egitto dall'età di venti anni in poi, non vedranno la terrapromessa da me con giuramento ad Abramo, ad Isacco, e Giacobbe, perché non hanno volutoseguir me,	11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,
12 Eccetto Caleb figliuolo di Jephone Cenezeo, e Giosuè figliuolo di Nun: questi hannoadempiuta la mia volontà.	12 except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed havefol owed Yahweh absolutely."
13 E il Signore sdegnato con Israele lo ha fatto andar girando pel deserto quarant' anni, sinoa tanto che quella generazione, che avea fatto il male dinanzi a lui, fosse consunta.	13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.
14 E adesso (diss'egli) siete usciti fuora voi in luogo dei padri vostri, rampolli ed allievidi uomini peccatori, ad attizzare il furor del Signore contro Israele.	14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!
15 Ma se voi non vorrete seguirlo, egli lascerà il popolo nella solitudine, e voi saretecagione dello sterminio di tutti.	15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'
16 Ma quegli fattisi più da presso dissero: Noi fabbricheremo dei recinti per le pecore, edelle stalle pe' giumenti, e le città forti pe' nostri fanciulli:	16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.
17 Noi poi armati, e in ordine anderemo alle battaglie innanzi a' figliuoli d'Israele, sino atanto che gli avremo introdotti ne' luoghi loro. I nostri fanciulli, e tutti i nostri beniresteranno nelle città munite per esser sicuri dalle insidie di quegli abitanti.	17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.
18 Noi non torneremo alle nostre case, sino a tanto che i figliuoli d'Israele sieno al possessodella loro eredità:	18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.
19 E non cercheremo nulla di là dal Giordano, perché abbiam già la nostra porzione dalla parteorientale di esso.	19 For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'
20 Rispose loro Mosé: se voi fate quello che promettete, andate pronti alla pugna davanti alSignore:	20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,
21 E ogni uomo atto alla guerra passi armato il Giordano, per fino a tanto che abbia il Signoredistrutti i suoi nemici.	21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,
22 E sia soggetto a lui tutto quel paese: allora voi sarete irreprensibili presso il Signore, epresso Israele, e otterrete con approvazione del Signore le terre, che voi bramate.	22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.
23 Se poi non farete quello che dite, non v'ha dubbio, che peccherete contro Dio: e sappiate,che il vostro peccato vi coglierà.	23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.
24 Rifabbricate adunque le città pe' vostri fanciulli, e de' recinti, e delle stalle pellepecore, e pe' giumenti: e adempite la vostra promessa.	24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'
25 E dissero i figliuoli di Gad, e di Ruben a Mosè: Noi siamo tuoi servi, faremo quello che cicomanda il Signor nostro.	25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.
26 Lasceremo i nostri fanciulli, e le donne, e i greggi, e i giumenti nelle città di Galaad:	26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,
27 E noi tutti servi tuoi andremo pronti alla guerra, come dici tu, o signore.	27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'
28 Mosè dunque intimò, e disse ad Eleazaro sacerdote, e a Giosuè figliuolo di Nun, e a'principi, delle famiglie delle tribù d'Israele:	28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.
29 Se i figliuoli di Gad e di Ruben passeranno con voi il Giordano tutti armati per combatteredavanti al Signore, conquistato che sia da voi quel paese, date loro la terra di Galaad indominio.	29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.
30 Ma se non vorranno passare con voi nella terra di Canaan, abbiano tra voi il luogo daabitare.	30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'
31 Risposero i figliuoli di Gad e di Ruben: Come ha detto il Signore a' suoi servi, cosifaremo:	31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.
32 Noi armati andremo sotto la condotta del Signore nella terra di Canaan, e confessiamo diaver già ricevuta la porzione nostra di qua del Giordano.	32 Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'
33 Diede adunque Mosè ai figliuoli di Gad e di Ruben, e a mezza la tribù di Manasse figliuolodi Giuseppe il regno di Sehon re degli Amorrhei, e il regno di Og re di Basan, e la terra diessi colle città all'intorno.	33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.
34 I figliuoli adunque di Gad, fabbricarono Dibon, e Ataroth, e Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Ed Etroth, e Sophan, e Jazer, e Jeghaa,	35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 E Bethnemra, e Betharan città munite, e parchi pe' loro bestiami.	36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.
37 E i figliuoli di Ruben edificarono Hesebon, ed Eleale, e Cariathaim,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 E Nabo, e Baalmeon, e parimente Sabama, cangiati i nomi, e imponendone altri alle città cheedificarono.	38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.
39 E i figliuoli di Machir figliuolo di Manasse entrarono nella terra di Galaad, e ladevastarono uccisi gli Amorrhei, che la abitavano.	39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.
40 Diede adunque Mosè la terra di Galaad a Machir figliuolo di Manasse, il quale l'abitò	40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
41 E Jair figliuolo di Manasse andò ad occupare de' borghi, ai quali diede il nome di Havoth-Jair, cioè borghi di Jair.	41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.
42 Nobe parimente andò, e prese Chanath co suoi villaggi: e le diede il suo nome di Nobe.	42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.
