| 1 Ma dopo che ebbe udite le parole dei figliuoli di Laban, che dicevano: Giacobbe ha usurpato tutto quello che era di nostro padre, e dei beni di lui si è fatto ricco signore: | 1 Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, "Jacob has taken all that was our fathers; and from what was our father's he has gained all this wealth." |
| 2 Osservò ancora, che Laban non lo guardava collo stesso occhio, che per lo passato, | 2 And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him with favor as before. |
| 3 Dicendogli di più il Signore: Torna alla terra de' padri tuoi, e a' tuoi parenti, e io sarò teco. | 3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you." |
| 4 Fece venire Rachele e Lia al campo, dove ei pasceva i greggi, | 4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where his flock was, |
| 5 E disse loro: Io veggo, che il padre vostro non mi guarda collo stesso occhio, che per lo passato: ma il Dio di mio padre è stato con me. | 5 and said to them, "I see that your father does not regard me with favor as he did before. But the God of my father has been with me. |
| 6 E voi sapete, come con tutto il mio potere ho servito al padre vostro. | 6 You know that I have served your father with all my strength; |
| 7 Ma il padre vostro mi gabbò, e ha mutato dieci volte la mia mercede: e con tutto questo Dio non ha permesso, ch'ei mi facesse del male. | 7 yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not permit him to harm me. |
| 8 Se una volta disse: Quelli di color vario saranno la tua mercede, le pecore figliavano tutte agnelli chiazzati: quando per lo contrario egli disse: Tu prenderai per tuo salario tutti i bianchi, tutti i greggi figliavano agnelli bianchi. | 8 If he said, 'The spotted shall be your wages,' then all the flock bore spotted; and if he said, 'The striped shall be your wages,' then all the flock bore striped. |
| 9 E Dio ha prese le facoltà del padre vostro, e le ha date a me. | 9 Thus God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me. |
| 10 Imperocché quando fu venuto il tempo, in cui le pecore dovean concepire, io alzai gli occhi miei, e vidi dormendo i maschi pezzati, e macchiati, e di colori diversi, i quali coprivano le femmine. | 10 In the mating season of the flock I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream that the he-goats which leaped upon the flock were striped, spotted, and mottled. |
| 11 E l'Angelo di Dio mi disse in sogno: Giacobbe? E io risposi: Eccomi qui. | 11 Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob,' and I said, 'Here I am!' |
| 12 Ed egli disse: Alza gli occhi tuoi, e mira i maschi tutti, che cuopron le femmine, pezzati, e macchiati, e di vario colore: perocché io ho veduto tutto quello che ha fatto a te Laban. | 12 And he said, 'Lift up your eyes and see, all the goats that leap upon the flock are striped, spotted, and mottled; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. |
| 13 Io sono il Dio di Bethel, dove tu ungesti la pietra, e facesti a me il voto. Adesso adunque levati, e parti da questa terra per tornare alla terra dove sei nato. | 13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now arise, go forth from this land, and return to the land of your birth.'" |
| 14 Rachele e Lia risposero: Riman egli forse qualche cosa per noi delle facoltà, e dell'eredità della casa di nostro padre? | 14 Then Rachel and Leah answered him, "Is there any portion or inheritance left to us in our father's house? |
| 15 Non ci ha egli riguardate come straniere, e ci ha vendute, e ha mangiato il prezzo, che di noi ha ritratto? | 15 Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has been using up the money given for us. |
| 16 Ma Dio ha prese le ricchezze di nostro padre, e le ha date a noi, e a' nostri figliuoli: fa' adunque tutto quello che Dio ti ha comandato. | 16 All the property which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children; now then, whatever God has said to you, do." |
| 17 Si ammannì adunque Giacobbe, e messi i figliuoli, e le mogli sopra i cammelli, se ne partì. | 17 So Jacob arose, and set his sons and his wives on camels; |
| 18 E prese tutto il suo, e i greggi, e tutto quello che avea guadagnato nella Mesopotamia, incamminandosi verso suo padre Isacco alla terra di Chanaan. | 18 and he drove away all his cattle, all his livestock which he had gained, the cattle in his possession which he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. |
| 19 Laban in quel tempo era andato a tosare le pecore, e Rachele rubò gl'idoli di suo padre. | 19 Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father's household gods. |
| 20 E Giacobbe non volle accusare a Laban la sua fuga. | 20 And Jacob outwitted Laban the Aramean, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee. |
| 21 E partito ch'ei fu con tutto quello che a lui apparteneva, mentre passato il fiume (Eufrate) si avanzava verso il monte Galaad, | 21 He fled with all that he had, and arose and crossed the Euphrates, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead. |
| 22 Fu portato avviso a Laban il terzo giorno, che Giacobbe fuggiva. | 22 When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled, |
| 23 Ed egli, presi seco i suoi fratelli, lo seguitò per sette giorni, e lo raggiunse sul monte di Galaad. | 23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him for seven days and followed close after him into the hill country of Gilead. |
| 24 E vide in sogno Dio, che gli disse: Guardati dal dire una torta parola contro Giacobbe. | 24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night, and said to him, "Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad." |
| 25 E Giacobbe avea già teso il suo padiglione sul monte: e sopraggiunto Laban co' suoi fratelli, la sua tenda piantò sullo stesso monte di Galaad. | 25 And Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen encamped in the hill country of Gilead. |
| 26 E disse a Giacobbe: Per qual motivo hai operato in tal guisa, menando via le mie figlie senza mia saputa, come prigioniere di guerra? | 26 And Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done, that you have cheated me, and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword? |
| 27 Perché hai tu voluto fuggire senza ch'io lo sapessi, e non anzi avvertirmi, affinché ti accompagnassi con festa, e cantici, e timpani, e cetre? | 27 Why did you flee secretly, and cheat me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre? |
| 28 Non mi hai permesso di dare un bacio a' miei figliuoli, e alle mie figlie: ti sei portato da stolto: e certamente adesso | 28 And why did you not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters farewell? Now you have done foolishly. |
| 29 È in poter mio farti pagar il fio. Ma il Dio del padre vostro ieri mi disse: Guardati dal parlare con asprezza contro Giacobbe. | 29 It is in my power to do you harm; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Take heed that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.' |
| 30 Tu desideravi di andartene a trovare i tuoi, e ti stimolava il desiderio della casa paterna, ti si conceda: perché mi hai rubati i miei dei? | 30 And now you have gone away because you longed greatly for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?" |
| 31 Rispose Giacobbe: Quanto all'essere partito senza tua saputa, io temei, che non mi togliessi per forza le tue figlie. | 31 Jacob answered Laban, "Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. |
| 32 Quanto poi al furto, di cui mi riconvieni; chiunque sia colui, presso del quale ritroverai i tuoi dei, sia messo a morte alla presenza de' tuoi fratelli: fa' le tue ricerche: tutto quello che troverai di tuo presso di me, prendilo pure. Dicendo questo, egli ignorava, che Rachele avesse rubato gl'idoli. | 32 Any one with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsmen point out what I have that is yours, and take it." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them. |
| 33 Entrato adunque Laban nella tenda di Giacobbe e di Lia, e dell'una e dell'altra schiava, niente trovò. Ma entrando egli nella tenda di Rachele, | 33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the tent of the two maidservants, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah's tent, and entered Rachels. |
| 34 Nascose ella con fretta gl'idoli sotto il basto di un cammello, e vi si pose sopra a sedere: e rifrustando egli tutta la tenda senza trovarli, | 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel's saddle, and sat upon them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them. |
| 35 Ella disse: Non prenda in mala parte il signor mio, se io non posso alzarmi alla tua presenza: perocché ho adesso il solito incomodo delle donne: così fu delusa l'ansietà del cercatore. | 35 And she said to her father, "Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me." So he searched, but did not find the household gods. |
| 36 E Giacobbe sdegnato disse con agre rampogne: Per qual mia colpa, o per qual mio peccato mi hai tenuto dietro con tanto calore, | 36 Then Jacob became angry, and upbraided Laban; Jacob said to Laban, "What is my offense? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me? |
| 37 E hai rifrustato tutta la mia suppellettile? Che hai tu trovato di roba della tua casa? ponla qui alla presenza de' fratelli miei, e de' tuoi fratelli, ed ei sieno giudici tra me, e te. | 37 Although you have felt through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsmen and your kinsmen, that they may decide between us two. |
| 38 Stetti io per questo venti anni teco? Le tue pecore, e le tue capre non furono sterili; io non mangiai gli arieti del tuo gregge: | 38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your she-goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams of your flocks. |
| 39 Né io ti facea vedere quelle che avea rapito una fiera; io pagava tutto il danno: tu esigevi da me tutto quel che era rubato: | 39 That which was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself; of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. |
| 40 Dì, e notte io era arso dal caldo, e dal gelo, e fuggiva il sonno dagli occhi miei. | 40 Thus I was; by day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. |
| 41 E in tal guisa a te servìi per venti anni in tua casa, quattordici per le figliuole, e sei pe' tuoi greggi: tu pur cangiasti la mia mercede per dieci volte. | 41 These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times. |
| 42 Se Il Dio del padre mio Abramo, e colui, che è temuto da Isacco, non mi avesse assistito, mi avresti forse adesso rimandato ignudo: Dio ha mirato la mia afflizione, e la fatica delle mie mani, e ieri ti sgridò. | 42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night." |
| 43 Rispose a lui Laban: Le mie figliuole, e i figliuoli, e greggi tuoi, e quanto tu vedi, son cosa mia: che posso io fare contro de' figli, o sia nipoti miei? | 43 Then Laban answered and said to Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children whom they have borne? |
| 44 Vieni adunque, e contraiamo alleanza, la quale serva di testimonianza tra me e te. | 44 Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I; and let it be a witness between you and me." |
| 45 Prese adunque Giacobbe una pietra, e la eresse in monumento: | 45 So Jacob took a stone, and set it up as a pillar. |
| 46 E disse a' suoi fratelli: Portate pietre. E quelli, raunatele, ne fecero un monticello, sopra del quale mangiarono. | 46 And Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather stones," and they took stones, and made a heap; and they ate there by the heap. |
| 47 E Laban chiamollo il Monticello del testimone, e Giacobbe il Monticello della testimonianza, ciascheduno secondo la proprietà del suo linguaggio. | 47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed. |
| 48 E Laban disse: Questo monticello sarà oggi testimone tra me e te; e per questo fu dato a quel monticello il nome di Galaad, cioè Monticello del testimone. | 48 Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today." Therefore he named it Galeed, |
| 49 Il Signore ponga mente, e sia giudice tra di noi, quando ci sarem dipartiti l'uno dall'altro. | 49 and the pillar Mizpah, for he said, "The LORD watch between you and me, when we are absent one from the other. |
| 50 Se tu farai oltraggio alle mie figliuole, e se oltre di esse prenderai altre mogli: nissuno è testimone delle nostre parole eccetto Dio, il qual presente ci mira. | 50 If you ill-treat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us, remember, God is witness between you and me." |
| 51 E di poi disse a Giacobbe: Ecco il monticello, e la pietra, che io ho eretta tra me e te, | 51 Then Laban said to Jacob, "See this heap and the pillar, which I have set between you and me. |
| 52 Sarà testimone: questo monticello, io dico, e questa pietra rendan testimonianza, se io l'oltrepasserò istradandomi verso di te, o se tu l'oltrepasserai con intenzione cattiva contro di me. | 52 This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. |
| 53 Il Dio d'Abramo, e il Dio di Nachor, il Dio del padre loro sia giudice tra di noi. Giurò adunque Giacobbe per lui, che Isacco suo padre temeva: | 53 The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us." So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac, |
| 54 E immolate sul monte le vittime, invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiare del pane. E quelli mangiato che l'ebbero, ivi si fermarono. | 54 and Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his kinsmen to eat bread; and they ate bread and tarried all night on the mountain. |
| 55 Quindi Laban alzatosi, che era ancor notte, baciò i figliuoli, e le figlie sue, e li benedisse, e tornossene a casa sua. | 55 Early in the morning Laban arose, and kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them; then he departed and returned home. |
