υπολαβων δε βαλδαδ ο σαυχιτης λεγει1 But Baldad the Suhite, responding, said:
μεχρι τινος λαλησεις ταυτα πνευμα πολυρημον του στοματος σου2 How long will you speak this way, so that the words of your mouth are like a changeable wind?
μη ο κυριος αδικησει κρινων η ο τα παντα ποιησας ταραξει το δικαιον3 Does God supplant judgment, or does the Almighty subvert that which is just?
ει οι υιοι σου ημαρτον εναντιον αυτου απεστειλεν εν χειρι ανομιας αυτων4 And if now your children have sinned against him, and he has dismissed them into the power of their iniquity,
συ δε ορθριζε προς κυριον παντοκρατορα δεομενος5 even so, you should arise early to God, so as to beseech the Almighty.
ει καθαρος ει και αληθινος δεησεως επακουσεται σου αποκαταστησει δε σοι διαιταν δικαιοσυνης6 If you approach with purity and honesty, he will quickly be attentive to you, and a peaceful life will repay your righteousness,
εσται ουν τα μεν πρωτα σου ολιγα τα δε εσχατα σου αμυθητα7 so much so that, if your former things were small, your latter things would be multiplied greatly.
επερωτησον γαρ γενεαν πρωτην εξιχνιασον δε κατα γενος πατερων8 For inquire of the earliest generation, and investigate diligently the history of the fathers,
χθιζοι γαρ εσμεν και ουκ οιδαμεν σκια γαρ εστιν ημων επι της γης ο βιος9 (of course, we are but of yesterday and are ignorant that our days on earth are like a shadow,)
η ουχ ουτοι σε διδαξουσιν και αναγγελουσιν και εκ καρδιας εξαξουσιν ρηματα10 and they will teach you; they will speak with you and will offer you the eloquence of their hearts.
μη θαλλει παπυρος ανευ υδατος η υψωθησεται βουτομον ανευ ποτου11 Can the marsh plant live without moisture? Or can sedges grow without water?
ετι ον επι ριζης και ου μη θερισθη προ του πιειν πασα βοτανη ουχι ξηραινεται12 When it is still in flower, and has not been pulled up by hand, it withers before all other plants.
ουτως τοινυν εσται τα εσχατα παντων των επιλανθανομενων του κυριου ελπις γαρ ασεβους απολειται13 Just so are the ways of all who forget God, and the hope of the hypocrite will perish.
αοικητος γαρ αυτου εσται ο οικος αραχνη δε αυτου αποβησεται η σκηνη14 His frenzy will not please him, and his faith will be like a spider’s web.
εαν υπερειση την οικιαν αυτου ου μη στη επιλαβομενου δε αυτου ου μη υπομεινη15 He will lean on his house, and it will not stand; he will prop it up, but it will not rise.
υγρος γαρ εστιν υπο ηλιου και εκ σαπριας αυτου ο ραδαμνος αυτου εξελευσεται16 He seems to have moisture before the sun arrives; and at sunrise, his sprout shoots forth.
επι συναγωγην λιθων κοιμαται εν δε μεσω χαλικων ζησεται17 His roots will crowd together over a heap of stones, and among the stones he will remain.
εαν καταπιη ο τοπος ψευσεται αυτον ουχ εορακας τοιαυτα18 If someone is devoured right beside him, he will deny him and will say: “I do not know you.”
οτι καταστροφη ασεβους τοιαυτη εκ δε γης αλλον αναβλαστησει19 For this is the benefit of his way, that others in turn may spring up from the earth.
ο γαρ κυριος ου μη αποποιησηται τον ακακον παν δε δωρον ασεβους ου δεξεται20 God will not discard the simple, nor will he extend his hand to the spiteful,
αληθινων δε στομα εμπλησει γελωτος τα δε χειλη αυτων εξομολογησεως21 even until your mouth is filled with laughter and your lips with rejoicing.
οι δε εχθροι αυτων ενδυσονται αισχυνην διαιτα δε ασεβους ουκ εσται22 Those who hate you, will be clothed with confusion, and the tabernacle of the impious will not continue.
