1 Then Job responded by saying:1 Respondens autem Job dixit :
2 Whose assistant are you? Is he weak-minded? And do you sustain the arm of him that is not strong?2 Cujus adjutor es ? numquid imbecillis ?
et sustentas brachium ejus qui non est fortis ?
3 To whom have you given advice? Perhaps it is to him that has no wisdom or prudence that you have revealed your many ideas.3 Cui dedisti consilium ?
forsitan illi qui non habet sapientiam :
et prudentiam tuam ostendisti plurimam.
4 Who is it that you wanted to teach? Was it not him that created the breath of life?4 Quem docere voluisti ?
nonne eum qui fecit spiramentum ?
5 Behold, giant things groan under the waters, and they dwell with them.5 Ecce gigantes gemunt sub aquis,
et qui habitant cum eis.
6 The underworld is naked before him, and there is no covering for perdition.6 Nudus est infernus coram illo,
et nullum est operimentum perditioni.
7 He stretched out the North over emptiness, and he suspended the land over nothing.7 Qui extendit aquilonem super vacuum,
et appendit terram super nihilum.
8 He secures the waters in his clouds, so that they do not burst forth downward all at once.8 Qui ligat aquas in nubibus suis,
ut non erumpant pariter deorsum.
9 He holds back the face of his throne, and he stretches his cloud over it.9 Qui tenet vultum solii sui,
et expandit super illud nebulam suam.
10 He has set limits around the waters, until light and darkness shall reach their limit.10 Terminum circumdedit aquis,
usque dum finiantur lux et tenebræ.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are frightened at his nod.11 Columnæ cæli contremiscunt,
et pavent ad nutum ejus.
12 By his strength, the seas suddenly gather together, and his foresight has struck the arrogant.12 In fortitudine illius repente maria congregata sunt,
et prudentia ejus percussit superbum.
13 His spirit has adorned the heavens, and his birthing hand has brought forth the winding serpent.13 Spiritus ejus ornavit cælos,
et obstetricante manu ejus, eductus est coluber tortuosus.
14 Behold, these things have been said about his ways in part, and, since we barely have heard a small drop of his word, who will be able to gaze upon the thunder of his greatness?14 Ecce hæc ex parte dicta sunt viarum ejus :
et cum vix parvam stillam sermonis ejus audierimus,
quis poterit tonitruum magnitudinis illius intueri ?
