1 But Job answered, and said:	1 Allora Giobbe rispose dicenedo:
2 O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance.	2 « Oh, se fossero pesati i miei peccati pei quali ho meritato il castigo, insieme alla sventura che soffro, sulla bilancia!
3 As the sand of the sea this would appear heavier: therefore my words are full of sorrow :	3 Questa apparirebbe più pesante dell'arena a del mare. Ecco perchè le mie parole son piene di dolore:
4 For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.	4 perchè le saette del Signore mi trafiggono, il loro veleno esaurisce il mio spirito, mentre i terrori del Signore mi assaltano.
5 Will the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or will the ox low when he standeth before a full manger?	5 Raglia forse l'asino selvatico quando ha l'erba davanti, o muggisce il bue dinanzi alla mangiatoia piena?
6 Or can an unsavoury thing be eaten, that is not seasoned with salt? or can a man taste that which when tasted bringeth death?	6 Si può mangiare una vivanda insipida senza sale? Si può gustare ciò che assaggiato dà la morte?
7 The things which before my soul would not touch, now, through anguish are my meats.	7 Ciò che prima io sdegnava toccare, ora, nel bisogno, è diventato il mio cibo.
8 Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for?	8 Oh! mi avvenisse quel che desidero, mi concedesse Iddio quel che aspetto!
9 And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?	9 Che colui che ha cominciato mi finisca, lasci libera la sua mano e mi faccia morire!
10 And that this may be my comfort, that afflicting me with sorrow, he spare not, nor I contradict the words of the Holy One.	10 Ciò mi sarebbe di consolazione, che in mezzo ai mali non mi risparmi, e di non essermi opposto alle parole del Santo.
11 For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end that I should keep patience?	11 E qual'è la mia forza da poterla durare? Quale fine m'aspetta, per sopportare con pazienza?
12 My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh of brass.	12 La mia resistenza non è come quella delle pietre, e la mia carne non è di bronzo.
13 Behold there is no help for me in myself, and my familiar friends also are departed from me.	13 Ecco, non c'è più energia in me, ed anche i miei cari mi hanno abbandonato.
14 He that taketh away mercy from his friend, forsaketh the fear of the Lord.	14 Chi non ha compassione per l'amico non ha più il timore del Signore.
15 My brethren have passed by me, as the torrent that passeth swiftly in the valleys.	15 I miei fratelli son passati davanti a me come un torrente che precipita nelle convalli.
16 They that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.	16 A chi teme la brinata cadrà addosso la neve.
17 At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish: and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.	17 Appena si saran dileguati, periranno, ai primi calori dispariranno dal loro luogo.
18 The paths of their steps are entangled: they shall walk in vain, and shall perish.	18 I sentieri dove camminano son tortuosi, inoltrandosi nel deserto, periranno.
19 Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while.	19 Mirate i sentieri di Tema e le strade di Saba, e aspettate un poco.
20 They are confounded, because I have hoped: they are come also even unto me, and are covered with shame.	20 Son confusi, perchè io ho sperato; venuti fino a me, sono stati coperti di confusione.
21 Now you are come: and now seeing my affliction you are afraid.	21 Siete venuti ora, e al sol vedere il mio male inorridite.
22 Did I say: Bring to me, and give me of your substance?	22 Vi ho forse detto: Portatemi qualche cosa, datemi dei vostri beni?
23 Or deliver me from the hand of the enemy, and rescue me out of the hand of the mighty?	23 Oppure: Liberatemi dalla mano del nemico, strappatemi dalla mano dei potenti?
24 Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and if I have been ignorant in any thing, instruct me.	24 Insegnatemi, e io tacerò e se per caso ho sbagliato, mostratemelo.
25 Why have you detracted the words of truth, whereas there is none of you that can reprove me?	25 Perchè intaccate le parole di verità, mentre non v'è tra voi chi possa riprendermi?
26 You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.	26 Solo per rimproverare fate dei discorsi, e gettate le parole al vento;
27 You rush in upon the fatherless, and you endeavour to overthrow your friend.	27 date addosso all'orfano, e vi sforzate di rovinare il vostro amico.
28 However finish what you have begun, give ear, and see whether I lie.	28 Su via, portate in fondo quel che avete cominciato, porgete l'orecchio, e guardate se mentisco.
29 Answer, I beseech you, without contention: and speaking that which is just, judge ye.	29 Rispondete, vi prego, senza altercare, e dicendo ciò che è giusto, giudicate;
30 And you shall not And iniquity in my tongue, neither shall folly sound in my mouth.	30 e non troverete iniquità sulla mia lingua e sulla mia bocca non risuonerà la stoltezza ».
