1 But Job answered, and said:	1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
2 O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance.	2 «Oh! se si pesassero i miei peccati, con i quali meritai l'ira, e la sventura ch'io soffro [si mettesse sull'altro piatto] della bilancia!
3 As the sand of the sea this would appear heavier: therefore my words are full of sorrow :	3 Questa risulterebbe più pesante della sabbia del mare: ond'è che le mie parole son piene di dolore!
4 For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.	4 Poichè le frecce del Signore stanno su me confitte, del loro veleno s'abbevera lo spirito mio, e i terrori del Signore contro di me stanno schierati.
5 Will the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or will the ox low when he standeth before a full manger?	5 Raglia forse l'onagro quando ha dell'erba, ovver muggisce il bove quando è davanti alla greppia ricolma?
6 Or can an unsavoury thing be eaten, that is not seasoned with salt? or can a man taste that which when tasted bringeth death?	6 Si può forse mangiare ciò ch'è insipido non condito di sale, ovver si gusta ciò che gustato dà morte?
7 The things which before my soul would not touch, now, through anguish are my meats.	7 Quelle cose che prima l'anima mia non voleva toccare, adesso nella mia sventura son diventate mio cibo.
8 Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for?	8 Oh! se si esaudisse la mia domanda, e ciò che io aspetto mi concedesse Dio!
9 And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?	9 Cioè, [Dio] che cominciò finisca con lo schiacciarmi, sciolga la sua mano per recidermi!
10 And that this may be my comfort, that afflicting me with sorrow, he spare not, nor I contradict the words of the Holy One.	10 E questa sarebbe per me la consolazione, che, mentre egli mi affligge di dolori senza risparmio, io non rinnego le parole sante.
11 For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end that I should keep patience?	11 Qual è mai infatti la mia forza, perchè io resista? qual è mai il mio fine, perchè io sia longanime?
12 My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh of brass.	12 Nè forza di pietre è la mia forza, nè la mia carne è di bronzo:
13 Behold there is no help for me in myself, and my familiar friends also are departed from me.	13 ecco, non v'è per me alcun sollievo in me, e pur i miei intimi s'allontanaron da me!
14 He that taketh away mercy from his friend, forsaketh the fear of the Lord.	14 Colui che nega al suo amico pietà, abbandona il timor del Signore.
15 My brethren have passed by me, as the torrent that passeth swiftly in the valleys.	15 I miei fratelli furon fallaci meco come un torrenteche d'un subito gonfia nelle valli:
16 They that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.	16 in esso si dissolve il ghiaccio, sopra esso cade la neve;
17 At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish: and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.	17 ma quando si dissecca è annientatoe al risentir del caldo scompare dal suo letto,
18 The paths of their steps are entangled: they shall walk in vain, and shall perish.	18 si contorcono i rigagnoli del suo corso, si sperdono su nel vuoto e finiscono.
19 Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while.	19 Le carovane di Thema erano state intente, le torme di Saba avevano sperato alquanto:
20 They are confounded, because I have hoped: they are come also even unto me, and are covered with shame.	20 ma restaron confuse perchè sperarono, giunsero fin lì, ma restaron deluse.
21 Now you are come: and now seeing my affliction you are afraid.	21 In tal maniera voi vi comportaste, chè ora vedendo la mia sventura vi sbigottite.
22 Did I say: Bring to me, and give me of your substance?	22 Ho detto io forse: - Datemi qualcosa? Dei vostri beni fatemi un donativo? -
23 Or deliver me from the hand of the enemy, and rescue me out of the hand of the mighty?	23 Ovvero: - Liberatemi dalla mano dell'avversario? dalla mano dei violenti scampatemi? -
24 Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and if I have been ignorant in any thing, instruct me.	24 Insegnatemi pure, ed io tacerò, e in ciò in cui io sia ignorante istruitemi.
25 Why have you detracted the words of truth, whereas there is none of you that can reprove me?	25 Perchè sminuite le parole veritiere, se fra voi non v'è alcuno che riesca a smentirmi?
26 You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.	26 Soltanto per ingiuriare voi intessete discorsi, e gittate le parole al vento;
27 You rush in upon the fatherless, and you endeavour to overthrow your friend.	27 sopra un orfano voi vi gettate, e vi sforzate d'abbattere l'amico vostro.
28 However finish what you have begun, give ear, and see whether I lie.	28 Ma poichè cominciaste, compite, porgete orecchio e vedete se mentisco.
29 Answer, I beseech you, without contention: and speaking that which is just, judge ye.	29 Rispondete, vi prego, senza contenziosità, e ragionando secondo giustizia, sentenziate:
30 And you shall not And iniquity in my tongue, neither shall folly sound in my mouth.	30 e non troverete nella mia lingua iniquità, nè dentro la mia bocca risonerà stoltezza.
