DOUAI-RHEIMSNOVA VULGATA
At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.1 In illo tempore audivit He rodes tetrarcha famam Iesu
And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.2 et ait puerissuis: “ Hic est Ioannes Baptista; ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutesoperantur in eo ”.
For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.3 Herodes enim tenuit Ioannem et alligavit eum et posuit incarcere propter Herodiadem uxorem Philippi fratris sui.
For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.4 Dicebat enim illiIoannes: “ Non licet tibi habere eam ”.
And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.5 Et volens illum occidere, timuitpopulum, quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.
But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.6 Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio et placuitHerodi,
Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.7 unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare, quodcumque postulasset.
But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.8 At illa, praemonita a matre sua: “ Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput IoannisBaptistae ”.
And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.9 Et contristatus rex propter iuramentum et eos, qui pariterrecumbebant, iussit dari
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.10 misitque et decollavit Ioannem in carcere;
And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.11 etallatum est caput eius in disco et datum est puellae, et tulit matri suae.
And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.12 Etaccedentes discipuli eius tulerunt corpus et sepelierunt illud et venientesnuntiaverunt Iesu.
Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.13 Quod cum audisset Iesus, secessit inde in navicula in locum desertum seorsum;et cum audissent, turbae secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.
And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.14 Et exiensvidit turbam multam et misertus est eorum et curavit languidos eorum.
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.15 Vespereautem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli dicentes: “ Desertus est locus, ethora iam praeteriit; dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella emant sibi escas ”.
But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.16 Iesus autem dixit eis: “ Non habent necesse ire; date illis vos manducare”.
They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.17 Illi autem dicunt ei: “ Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duospisces ”.
He said to them: Bring them hither to me.18 Qui ait: “ Afferte illos mihi huc ”.
And when he had commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.19 Et cum iussissetturbas discumbere supra fenum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit et fregit et dedit discipulis panes, discipuliautem turbis.
And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.20 Et manducaverunt omnes et saturati sunt; et tulerunt reliquiasfragmentorum duodecim cophinos plenos.
And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Manducantium autem fuit numerus ferequinque milia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.
And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.22 Et statim iussit discipulos ascendere in naviculam et praecedere eum transfretum, donec dimitteret turbas.
And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.23 Et dimissis turbis, ascendit in montem solusorare. Vespere autem facto, solus erat ibi.
But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.24 Navicula autem iam multis stadiis a terra distabat, fluctibus iactata; eratenim contrarius ventus.
And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.25 Quarta autem vigilia noctis venit ad eos ambulanssupra mare.
And they seeing him walk upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.26 Discipuli autem, videntes eum supra mare ambulantem, turbati suntdicentes: “ Phantasma est ”, et prae timore clamaverunt.
And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.27 Statimque Iesuslocutus est eis dicens: “ Habete fiduciam, ego sum; nolite timere! ”.
And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.28 Respondens autem ei Petrus dixit: “ Domine, si tu es, iube me venire ad tesuper aquas ”.
And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.29 At ipse ait: “ Veni! ”. Et descendens Petrus de naviculaambulavit super aquas et venit ad Iesum.
But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.30 Videns vero ventum validum timuitet, cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: “ Domine, salvum me fac! ”.
And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?31 Continuo autem Iesus extendens manum apprehendit eum et ait illi: “ Modicaefidei, quare dubitasti? ”.
And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.32 Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavitventus.
And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.33 Qui autem in navicula erant, adoraverunt eum dicentes: “ VereFilius Dei es! ”.
And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.34 Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.35 Et cum cognovissenteum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam et obtulerunt eiomnes male habentes,
And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.36 et rogabant eum, ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eiustangerent; et, quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.
