DOUAI-RHEIMSBIBLIA
At the time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.1 En aquel tiempo se enteró el tetrarca Herodes de la fama de Jesús,
And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.2 y dijo a sus criados: «Ese es Juan el Bautista; él ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas».
For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother's wife.3 Es que Herodes había prendido a Juan, le había encadenado y puesto en la cárcel, por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo.
For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.4 Porque Juan le decía: «No te es lícito tenerla».
And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.5 Y aunque quería matarle, temió a la gente, porque le tenían por profeta.
But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.6 Mas llegado el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías danzó en medio de todos gustando tanto a Herodes,
Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.7 que éste le prometió bajo juramento darle lo que pidiese.
But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.8 Ella, instigada por su madre, «dame aquí, dijo, en una bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.9 Entristecióse el rey, pero, a causa del juramento y de los comensales, ordenó que se le diese,
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.10 y envió a decapitar a Juan en la cárcel.
And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.11 Su cabeza fue traída en una bandeja y entregada a la muchacha, la cual se la llevó a su madre.
And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.12 Llegando después sus discípulos, recogieron el cadáver y lo sepultaron; y fueron a informar a Jesús.
Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.13 Al oírlo Jesús, se retiró de allí en una barca, aparte, a un lugar solitario. En cuanto lo supieron las gentes, salieron tras él viniendo a pie de las ciudades.
And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.14 Al desembarcar, vio mucha gente, sintió compasión de ellos y curó a sus enfermos.
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.15 Al atardecer se le acercaron los discíplulos diciendo: «El lugar está deshabitado, y la hora es ya pasada. Despide, pues, a la gente, para que vayan a los pueblos y se compren comida».
But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.16 Mas Jesús les dijo: «No tienen por qué marcharse; dadles vosotros de comer».
They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.17 Dícenle ellos: «No tenemos aquí más que cinco panes y dos peces».
He said to them: Bring them hither to me.18 El dijo: «Traédmelos acá».
And when he had commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.19 Y ordenó a la gente reclinarse sobre la hierba; tomó luego los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció la bendición y, partiendo los panes, se los dio a los discípulos y los discípulos a la gente.
And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.20 Comieron todos y se saciaron, y recogieron de los trozos sobrantes doce canastos llenos.
And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.21 Y los que habían comido eran unos 5.000 hombres, sin contar mujeres y niños.
And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.22 Inmediatamente obligó a los discípulos a subir a la barca y a ir por delante de él a la otra orilla, mientras él despedía a la gente.
And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.23 Después de despedir a la gente, subió al monte a solas para orar; al atardecer estaba solo allí.
But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.24 La barca se hallaba ya distante de la tierra muchos estadios, zarandeada por las olas, pues el viento era contrario.
And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.25 Y a la cuarta vigilia de la noche vino él hacia ellos, caminando sobre el mar.
And they seeing him walk upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.26 Los discípulos, viéndole caminar sobre el mar, se turbaron y decían: «Es un fantasma», y de miedo se pusieron a gritar.
And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.27 Pero al instante les habló Jesús diciendo: «¡Animo!, que soy yo; no temáis».
And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.28 Pedro le respondió: «Señor, si eres tú, mándame ir donde ti sobre las aguas».
And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.29 «¡Ven!», le dijo. Bajó Pedro de la barca y se puso a caminar sobre las aguas, yendo hacia Jesús.
But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.30 Pero, viendo la violencia del viento, le entró miedo y, como comenzara a hundirse, gritó: «¡Señor, sálvame!»
And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?31 Al punto Jesús, tendiendo la mano, le agarró y le dice: «Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste?»
And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.32 Subieron a la barca y amainó el viento.
And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.33 Y los que estaban en la barca se postraron ante él diciendo: «Verdaderamente eres Hijo de Dios».
And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.34 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret.
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.35 Los hombres de aquel lugar, apenas le reconocieron, pregonaron la noticia por toda aquella comarca y le presentaron todos los enfermos.
And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.36 Le pedían que tocaran siquiera la orla de su manto; y cuantos la tocaron quedaron salvados.
