1 FIGLIUOL mio, se tu hai fatta sicurtà al tuo prossimo, Se tu hai toccata la mano allo strano,	1 My son, if you have taken a pledge on behalf of your friend, then you have bound your hand to an outsider,
2 Tu sei allacciato con le parole della tua bocca, Tu sei preso con le parole della tua bocca.	2 then you are ensnared by the words of your own mouth, and taken captive by your own words.
3 Ora fa’ questo, figliuol mio, e riscuotiti; Poichè tu sei caduto in man del tuo prossimo, Va’, gittati a’ piedi de’ tuoi amici, e sollecitali.	3 Therefore, my son, do what I say, and free yourself, for you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor. Run, hurry, awaken your friend.
4 Non lasciar dormire gli occhi tuoi, Nè sonnecchiar le tue palpebre.	4 Do not grant sleep to your eyes, nor let your eyelids slumber.
5 Riscuotiti, come un cavriuolo di mano del cacciatore, E come un uccello di mano dell’uccellatore	5 Rescue yourself like a gazelle from the hand, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va’, pigro, alla formica; Riguarda le sue vie, e diventa savio;	6 Go to the ant, you lazy one, and consider her ways, and so learn wisdom.
7 Conciossiachè ella non abbia nè capitano, Nè magistrato, nè signore;	7 For though she has no ruler, nor instructor, nor leader,
8 E pure ella apparecchia nella state il suo cibo, E raduna nella ricolta il suo mangiare.	8 she provides meals for herself in the summer, and she gathers at the harvest what she may eat.
9 Infino a quando, o pigro, giacerai? Quando ti desterai dal tuo sonno?	9 How long will you slumber, you lazy one? When will you rise up from your sleep?
10 Dormendo un poco, sonnecchiando un poco, Piegando un poco le braccia per riposare;	10 You will sleep a little, you will slumber a little, you will fold your hands a little to sleep,
11 La tua povertà verrà come un viandante, E la tua necessità come uno scudiere	11 and then destitution will meet with you, like a traveler, and poverty, like an armed man. Yet truly, if you would be diligent, then your harvest will arrive like a fountain, and destitution will flee far from you.
12 L’uomo scellerato, l’uomo da nulla, Procede con perversità di bocca.	12 An apostate man, a harmful man, walks with a perverse mouth;
13 Egli ammicca con gli occhi, parla co’ piedi, Accenna con le dita;	13 he winks with the eyes, touches with the foot, speaks with the finger.
14 Egli ha delle perversità nel suo cuore, Egli macchina del male in ogni tempo; Egli commette contese.	14 With a depraved heart he devises evil, and at all times he sows conflict.
15 Perciò in un momento verrà la sua ruina; Egli di subito sarà fiaccato, senza rimedio.	15 To this one, his perdition will arrive promptly, and he shall be crushed suddenly: he will no longer have any remedy.
16 Il Signore odia queste sei cose; Anzi queste sette son cosa abbominevole all’anima sua;	16 Six things there are that the Lord hates, and the seventh, his soul detests:
17 Gli occhi altieri, la lingua bugiarda, E la mani che spandono il sangue innocente,	17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 Il cuore che divisa pensieri d’iniquità, I piedi che si affrettano per correre al male,	18 a heart that devises the most wicked thoughts, feet running swiftly unto evil,
19 Il falso testimonio che sbocca menzogne, E colui che commette contese tra fratelli	19 a deceitful witness bringing forth lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
20 FIGLIUOL mio, guarda il comandamento di tuo padre, E non lasciar l’insegnamento di tua madre;	20 My son, preserve the precepts of your father, and do not dismiss the law of your mother.
21 Tienli del continuo legati in sul tuo cuore, Ed avvinti in su la tua gola.	21 Bind them to your heart unceasingly, and encircle them around your throat.
22 Quando tu camminerai, quello ti guiderà; Quando tu giacerai, farà la guardia intorno a te; E quando tu ti risveglierai, ragionerà teco;	22 When you walk, let them keep step with you. When you sleep, let them guard you. And when you keep watch, speak with them.
23 Perciocchè il comandamento è una lampana, E l’insegnamento è una luce, E le correzioni di disciplina son la via della vita;	23 For commandment is a lamp, and law is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.
24 Per guardarti dalla femmina malvagia, Dalle lusinghe della lingua della straniera.	24 So may they guard you from an evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the outsider.
25 Non invaghirti nel tuo cuore della sua bellezza; E non prendati ella con le sue palpebre.	25 Let not your heart desire her beauty; do not be captivated by her winks.
26 Perciocchè per una donna meretrice si viene fino ad un pezzo di pane; E la donna vaga d’uomini va a caccia dietro alle anime preziose.	26 For the price of a prostitute is only one loaf. Yet the woman seizes the precious soul of a man.
27 Alcuno prenderà egli del fuoco in seno, Senza che i suoi vestimenti ne sieno arsi?	27 Would a man be able to conceal fire in his bosom, so that his garments would not burn?
28 Alcuno camminerà egli sopra le brace, Senza bruciarsi i piedi?	28 Or could he walk over burning coals, so that his feet would not be burned?
29 Così avviene a chi entra dalla moglie del suo prossimo; Chiunque la tocca non sarà innocente.	29 So also, he who enters to the wife of his neighbor shall not be clean when he touches her.
30 Ei non si scusa il ladro, quando egli ruba Per saziarsi, avendo fame;	30 Not so great is the fault when someone has stolen. For he steals so as to satisfy a hungry soul.
31 Anzi, se è colto, restituisce il furto a sette doppi, Egli dà tutta la sostanza di casa sua.	31 Also, if he is apprehended, he shall repay sevenfold and hand over all the substance of his house.
32 Chi commette adulterio con una donna è scemo di senno; Chi vuol perder l’anima sua faccia tal cosa.	32 But whoever is an adulterer, because of the emptiness of his heart, will destroy his own soul.
33 Egli troverà ferite ed ignominia; E il suo vituperio non sarà giammai cancellato.	33 He gathers shame and dishonor to himself, and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 Perciocchè la gelosia è un furor dell’uomo; Ed egli non risparmierà nel giorno della vendetta.	34 For the jealousy and fury of the husband will not spare him on the day of vindication,
35 Egli non avrà riguardo ad alcun riscatto; Ed avvegnachè tu moltiplichi i presenti, non però li accetterà	35 nor will he agree to the pleadings of anyone, nor will he accept, as repayment, a multitude of gifts.
