DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 FIGLIUOL mio, se tu hai fatta sicurtà al tuo prossimo, Se tu hai toccata la mano allo strano,	1 My child, if you have gone surety for your neighbour, if you have guaranteed the bond of a stranger,
2 Tu sei allacciato con le parole della tua bocca, Tu sei preso con le parole della tua bocca.	2 if you have committed yourself with your lips, if through words of yours you have been entrapped,
3 Ora fa’ questo, figliuol mio, e riscuotiti; Poichè tu sei caduto in man del tuo prossimo, Va’, gittati a’ piedi de’ tuoi amici, e sollecitali.	3 do this, my child, to extricate yourself -- since you have put yourself in the power of your neighbour: go,humble yourself, plead with your neighbour,
4 Non lasciar dormire gli occhi tuoi, Nè sonnecchiar le tue palpebre.	4 give your eyes no sleep, your eyelids no rest,
5 Riscuotiti, come un cavriuolo di mano del cacciatore, E come un uccello di mano dell’uccellatore	5 break free like a gazel e from the trap, like a bird from the fowler's clutches.
6 Va’, pigro, alla formica; Riguarda le sue vie, e diventa savio;	6 Idler, go to the ant; ponder her ways and grow wise:
7 Conciossiachè ella non abbia nè capitano, Nè magistrato, nè signore;	7 no one gives her orders, no overseer, no master,

10 Dormendo un poco, sonnecchiando un poco, Piegando un poco le braccia per riposare;	10 A little sleep, a little drowsiness, a little folding of the arms to lie back,
11 La tua povertà verrà come un viandante, E la tua necessità come uno scudiere	11 and poverty comes like a vagrant and, like a beggar, dearth.
12 L’uomo scellerato, l’uomo da nulla, Procede con perversità di bocca.	12 A scoundrel, a vicious man, he goes with a leer on his lips,

18 Il cuore che divisa pensieri d’iniquità, I piedi che si affrettano per correre al male,	18 a heart that weaves wicked plots, feet that hurry to do evil,
19 Il falso testimonio che sbocca menzogne, E colui che commette contese tra fratelli	19 a false witness who lies with every breath, and one who sows dissension among brothers.
20 FIGLIUOL mio, guarda il comandamento di tuo padre, E non lasciar l’insegnamento di tua madre;	20 Keep your father's precept, my child, do not spurn your mother's teaching.
21 Tienli del continuo legati in sul tuo cuore, Ed avvinti in su la tua gola.	21 Bind them ever to your heart, tie them round your neck.
22 Quando tu camminerai, quello ti guiderà; Quando tu giacerai, farà la guardia intorno a te; E quando tu ti risveglierai, ragionerà teco;	22 While you are active, they will guide you, when you fal asleep, they wil watch over you, when youwake up, they will converse with you.
23 Perciocchè il comandamento è una lampana, E l’insegnamento è una luce, E le correzioni di disciplina son la via della vita;	23 For the precept is a lamp, the teaching is a light; correction and discipline are the way to life,
24 Per guardarti dalla femmina malvagia, Dalle lusinghe della lingua della straniera.	24 preserving you from the woman of bad character, from the wheedling talk of a woman who belongs toanother.
25 Non invaghirti nel tuo cuore della sua bellezza; E non prendati ella con le sue palpebre.	25 Do not covet her beauty in your heart or let her captivate you with the play of her eyes;
26 Perciocchè per una donna meretrice si viene fino ad un pezzo di pane; E la donna vaga d’uomini va a caccia dietro alle anime preziose.	26 a prostitute can be bought for a hunk of bread, but a married woman aims to snare a precious life.
27 Alcuno prenderà egli del fuoco in seno, Senza che i suoi vestimenti ne sieno arsi?	27 Can a man carry fire inside his shirt without setting his clothes alight?
28 Alcuno camminerà egli sopra le brace, Senza bruciarsi i piedi?	28 Can you walk on red-hot coals without burning your feet?
29 Così avviene a chi entra dalla moglie del suo prossimo; Chiunque la tocca non sarà innocente.	29 Just so, the man who makes love to his neighbour's wife: no one who touches her wil get offunpunished.
30 Ei non si scusa il ladro, quando egli ruba Per saziarsi, avendo fame;	30 People attach but little blame to a thief who steals only to satisfy his hunger;
31 Anzi, se è colto, restituisce il furto a sette doppi, Egli dà tutta la sostanza di casa sua.	31 yet even he, if caught, wil have to repay sevenfold and hand over all his family resources.
32 Chi commette adulterio con una donna è scemo di senno; Chi vuol perder l’anima sua faccia tal cosa.	32 But the adulterer has no sense; he works his own destruction.
33 Egli troverà ferite ed ignominia; E il suo vituperio non sarà giammai cancellato.	33 All he wil get is blows and contempt, and dishonour never to be blotted out.
34 Perciocchè la gelosia è un furor dell’uomo; Ed egli non risparmierà nel giorno della vendetta.	34 For jealousy inflames the husband who wil show no mercy when the day comes for revenge;
35 Egli non avrà riguardo ad alcun riscatto; Ed avvegnachè tu moltiplichi i presenti, non però li accetterà	35 he wil not consider any compensation; lavish what gifts you may, he wil not be placated.
