1 E' egli a te noto il tempo, in cui le capre salvatiche partoriscono nelle spelonche; od hai tu osservato il partorir delle cerve?	1 Do you know about the birth of the mountain goats, watch for the birth pangs of the hinds,
2 Hai tu contati i mesi di lor gravidanza, e segnato il tempo del loro parto?	2 Number the months that they must fulfill, and fix the time of their bringing forth?
3 Elle si incurvano, e partoriscono urlando.	3 They crouch down and bear their young; they deliver their progeny in the desert.
4 Si separano da esse i loro parti, e vanno alla pastura: se ne vanno, né tornan più a rivederle.	4 When their offspring thrive and grow, they leave and do not return.
5 Chi pose l'asino salvatico in libertà, e da ogni freno lo sciolse?	5 Who has given the wild ass his freedom, and who has loosed him from bonds?
6 A lui io diedi per casa il deserto, e per istanza una terra infeconda.	6 I have made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
7 Egli dispregia gli strepiti delle città, e non ode le grida di un duro padrone.	7 He scoffs at the uproar of the city, and hears no shouts of a driver.
8 Volge egli in giro gli occhi alle montagne di sua pastura, e va in traccia di ogni genere di verzura.	8 He ranges the mountains for pasture, and seeks out every patch of green.
9 Vorrà egli servire a te il rinoceronte, o starsene alla tua mangiatoia?	9 Will the wild ox consent to serve you, and to pass the nights by your manger?
10 Porrai tu al tuo giogo ad arare il rinoceronte; o romperà egli dietro a te le zolle delle tue valli?	10 Will a rope bind him in the furrow, and will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Ti fiderai tu della sua gran forza, e a cura di lui porrai i tuoi lavori di campagna?	11 Will you trust him for his great strength and leave to him the fruits of your toil?
12 Credi tu ch'ei ti renderà la tua semente, ed empierà la tua aia?	12 Can you rely on him to thresh out your grain and gather in the yield of your threshing floor?
13 La piuma dello struzzo è simile alle penne della cicogna, e dello sparviere.	13 The wings of the ostrich beat idly; her plumage is lacking in pinions.
14 Quand'egli abbandona le sue uova per terra, se tu' forse, che tralla polvere le riscaldi?	14 When she leaves her eggs on the ground and deposits them in the sand,
15 Egli non pensa, che il piede le schiaccerà, o le fiere selvagge le pesteranno.	15 Unmindful that a foot may crush them, that the wild beasts may trample them,
16 Egli è crudele verso i suoi parti, come se suoi non fossero, egli getta le sue fatiche, senza che timore alcuno il costringa.	16 She cruelly disowns her young and ruthlessly makes nought of her brood;
17 Perché il Signore lo privò di saggezza, e non gli diede discernimento.	17 For God has withheld wisdom from her and has given her no share in understanding.
18 Ma quando è tempo egli stende in alto sue ali, o si burla del cavallo, e del cavaliere.	18 Yet in her swiftness of foot she makes sport of the horse and his rider.
19 Sarai tu che darai fortezza al cavallo, o la sua gola empierai di nitriti?	19 Do you give the horse his strength, and endow his neck with splendor?
20 Lo farai tu saltellare come le locuste? la maestà delle sue narici atterrisce?	20 Do you make the steed to quiver while his thunderous snorting spreads terror?
21 Scalza la terra colla zampa, saltella con brio, va incontro agli armati,	21 He jubilantly paws the plain and rushes in his might against the weapons.
22 Disprezzator di paura, nol rattiene la spada.	22 He laughs at fear and cannot be deterred; he turns not back from the sword.
23 Sente sopra di se il rumor del turcasso, il vibrar delle lance, e il moto dello scudo.	23 Around him rattles the quiver, flashes the spear and the javelin.
24 Spumante, e fremente si mangia la terra, né aspetta che suoni la tromba.	24 Frenzied and trembling he devours the ground; he holds not back at the sound of the trumpet,
25 Sentita ch'egli ha la tromba, dice: Bene sta. Sente da lungi l'odor di battaglia, le esortazioni de' capitani, e le strida delle milizie.	25 but at each blast he cries, "Aha!" Even from afar he scents the battle, the roar of the chiefs and the shouting.
26 Forse per effetto di tua sapienza si veste lo sparviere di piume, e le ali distende verso il mezzodì?	26 Is it by your discernment that the hawk soars, that he spreads his wings toward the south?
27 Forse al tuo comando si leverà in alto l'aquila, e in luoghi eccelsi farà, suo nido?	27 Does the eagle fly up at your command to build his nest aloft?
28 Se ne sta ella sui massi, e negli scoscesi dirupi, e su' gioghi inaccessibili.	28 On the cliff he dwells and spends the night, on the spur of the cliff or the fortress.
29 Di là ella contempla la preda, e i suoi occhi veggono in gran lontananza.	29 From thence he watches for his prey; his eyes behold it afar off.
30 I suoi aquilotti leccano il sangue, e dovunque sia un cadavere tosto ella, si trova.	30 His young ones greedily drink blood; where the slain are, there is he.
31 E il Signore soggiunse, e disse a Giobbe:
32 Colui che alterca con Dio, si acquieterà egli si facilmente? Certo che chi vuoi riprendere Dio debbe rispondergli.
33 Ma Giobbe rispose al Signore, e disse:
34 Io che ho parlato con leggerezza, che posso rispondere? mi porrò la mano alla bocca.
35 Una cosa ho detto, la quale non avess'io detta giammai; e anche un'altra, alle quali niente più aggiungerò.
