1 For this Melchisedech was king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him:	1 Questo Melchìsedek infatti, re di Salem, sacerdote del Dio altissimo, andò incontro ad Abramo mentre ritornava dall’avere sconfitto i re e lo benedisse;
2 To whom also Abraham divided the tithes of all: who first indeed by interpretation, is king of justice: and then also king of Salem, that is, king of peace:	2 a lui Abramo diede la decima di ogni cosa. Anzitutto il suo nome significa «re di giustizia»; poi è anche re di Salem, cioè «re di pace».
3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened unto the Son of God, continueth a priest for ever.	3 Egli, senza padre, senza madre, senza genealogia, senza principio di giorni né fine di vita, fatto simile al Figlio di Dio, rimane sacerdote per sempre.
4 Now consider how great this man is, to whom also Abraham the patriarch gave tithes out of the principal things.	4 Considerate dunque quanto sia grande costui, al quale Abramo, il patriarca, diede la decima del suo bottino.
5 And indeed they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is to say, of their brethren: though they themselves also came out of the loins of Abraham.	5 In verità anche quelli tra i figli di Levi che assumono il sacerdozio hanno il mandato di riscuotere, secondo la Legge, la decima dal popolo, cioè dai loro fratelli, essi pure discendenti da Abramo.
6 But he, whose pedigree is not numbered among them, received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.	6 Egli invece, che non era della loro stirpe, prese la decima da Abramo e benedisse colui che era depositario delle promesse.
7 And without all contradiction, that which is less, is blessed by the better.	7 Ora, senza alcun dubbio, è l’inferiore che è benedetto dal superiore.
8 And here indeed, men that die, receive thithes: but there he hath witness, that he liveth.	8 Inoltre, qui riscuotono le decime uomini mortali; là invece, uno di cui si attesta che vive.
9 And (as it may be said) even Levi who received tithes, paid tithes in Abraham:	9 Anzi, si può dire che lo stesso Levi, il quale riceve le decime, in Abramo abbia versato la sua decima:
10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedech met him.	10 egli infatti, quando gli venne incontro Melchìsedek, si trovava ancora nei lombi del suo antenato.
11 If then perfection was by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchisedech, and not be called according to the order of Aaron?	11 Ora, se si fosse realizzata la perfezione per mezzo del sacerdozio levitico – sotto di esso il popolo ha ricevuto la Legge –, che bisogno c’era che sorgesse un altro sacerdote secondo l’ordine di Melchìsedek, e non invece secondo l’ordine di Aronne?
12 For the priesthood being translated, it is necessary that a translation also be made of the law.	12 Infatti, mutato il sacerdozio, avviene necessariamente anche un mutamento della Legge.
13 For he, of whom these things are spoken, is of another tribe, of which no one attended on the altar.	13 Colui del quale si dice questo, appartiene a un’altra tribù, della quale nessuno mai fu addetto all’altare.
14 For it is evident that our Lord sprung out of Juda: in which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.	14 È noto infatti che il Signore nostro è germogliato dalla tribù di Giuda, e di essa Mosè non disse nulla riguardo al sacerdozio.
15 And it is yet far more evident: if according to the similitude of Melchisedech there ariseth another priest,	15 Ciò risulta ancora più evidente dal momento che sorge, a somiglianza di Melchìsedek, un sacerdote differente,
16 Who is made not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an indissoluble life:	16 il quale non è diventato tale secondo una legge prescritta dagli uomini, ma per la potenza di una vita indistruttibile.
17 For he testifieth: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech.	17 Gli è resa infatti questa testimonianza: Tu sei sacerdote per sempre secondo l’ordine di Melchìsedek.
18 There is indeed a setting aside of the former commandment, because of the weakness and unprofitableness thereof:	18 Si ha così l’abrogazione di un ordinamento precedente a causa della sua debolezza e inutilità –
19 (For the law brought nothing to perfection,) but a bringing in of a better hope, by which we draw nigh to God.	19 la Legge infatti non ha portato nulla alla perfezione – e si ha invece l’introduzione di una speranza migliore, grazie alla quale noi ci avviciniamo a Dio.
20 And inasmuch as it is not without an oath, (for the others indeed were made priests without an oath;	20 Inoltre ciò non avvenne senza giuramento. Quelli infatti diventavano sacerdoti senza giuramento;
21 But this with an oath, by him that said unto him: The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever.)	21 costui al contrario con il giuramento di colui che gli dice: Il Signore ha giurato e non si pentirà: tu sei sacerdote per sempre.
22 By so much is Jesus made a surety of a better testament.	22 Per questo Gesù è diventato garante di un’alleanza migliore.
23 And the others indeed were made many priests, because by reason of death they were not suffered to continue:	23 Inoltre, quelli sono diventati sacerdoti in gran numero, perché la morte impediva loro di durare a lungo.
24 But this, for that he continueth for ever, hath an everlasting priesthood,	24 Egli invece, poiché resta per sempre, possiede un sacerdozio che non tramonta.
25 Whereby he is able also to save for ever them that come to God by him; always living to make intercession for us.	25 Perciò può salvare perfettamente quelli che per mezzo di lui si avvicinano a Dio: egli infatti è sempre vivo per intercedere a loro favore.
26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;	26 Questo era il sommo sacerdote che ci occorreva: santo, innocente, senza macchia, separato dai peccatori ed elevato sopra i cieli.
27 Who needeth not daily (as the other priests) to offer sacrifices first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, in offering himself.	27 Egli non ha bisogno, come i sommi sacerdoti, di offrire sacrifici ogni giorno, prima per i propri peccati e poi per quelli del popolo: lo ha fatto una volta per tutte, offrendo se stesso.
28 For the law maketh men priests, who have infirmity: but the word of the oath, which was since the law, the Son who is perfected for evermore.	28 La Legge infatti costituisce sommi sacerdoti uomini soggetti a debolezza; ma la parola del giuramento, posteriore alla Legge, costituisce sacerdote il Figlio, reso perfetto per sempre.
