| 1 Je vous conjure donc, moi prisonnier dans le Seigneur, de marcher d'une manière digne de la vocation à laquelle vous avez été appelés : | 1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, |
| 2 en toute humilité et douceur, avec patience, vous supportant les uns les autres avec charité, | 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; |
| 3 vous efforçant de conserver l'unité de l'esprit dans le lien de la paix. | 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. |
| 4 Il y a (Soyez) un seul corps et un seul esprit, comme vous avez été appelés à une seule espérance par votre vocation. | 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; |
| 5 Il y a un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême. | 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, |
| 6 Il y a un seul Dieu et Père de tous, qui est au-dessus de tous, qui agit par tous, et qui réside en nous tous. | 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. |
| 7 Mais à chacun de nous la grâce a été donnée selon la mesure du don du Christ. | 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. |
| 8 C'est pourquoi l'Ecriture dit : Etant monté en haut, il a emmené des captifs (conduit une captivité captive, note), il a donné des dons aux hommes. | 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. |
| 9 Or, que signifie : Il est monté, sinon qu'il était descendu d'abord dans les parties inférieures de la terre ? | 9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? |
| 10 Celui qui est descendu est le même que celui qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux, afin de remplir toutes choses. | 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) |
| 11 Et c'est lui qui a donné les uns comme Apôtres, d'autres comme prophètes, d'autres comme évangélistes, d'autres comme pasteurs et docteurs, | 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; |
| 12 pour le perfectionnement des saints, pour l'œuvre du ministère, pour l'édification du corps du Christ, | 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: |
| 13 jusqu'à ce que nous parvenions tous à l'unité de la foi et de la connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l'état d'homme parfait, à la mesure de l'âge de la plénitude du Christ ; | 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: |
| 14 afin que nous ne soyons plus des enfants ballottés et que nous ne soyons plus emportés à tout vent de doctrine, par la malice des hommes, par les artifices séduisants de l'erreur, | 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; |
| 15 mais que, pratiquant la vérité dans la charité, nous croissions à tout égard en celui qui est le chef, le Christ. | 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: |
| 16 C'est de lui que le corps entier, bien harmonisé et bien assemblé, par toutes les jointures qui s'assistent mutuellement, suivant une opération bien mesurée pour chaque membre, tire son accroissement et s'édifie (lui-même) dans la charité. | 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. |
| 17 Voici donc ce que je dis et ce que je vous atteste (conjure) dans le Seigneur : c'est que vous ne marchiez plus comme les païens (gentils), qui marchent selon la vanité de leurs pensées, | 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, |
| 18 qui ont l'intelligence obscurcie (de ténèbres), qui sont étrangers à la vie de Dieu, à cause de l'ignorance où ils sont, et de l'aveuglement de leur cœur. | 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: |
| 19 Ayant perdu tout sentiment, ils se sont livrés à l'impudicité, à la pratique de toute espèce d'impureté et à l'avarice. | 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. |
| 20 Mais vous, ce n'est pas ainsi que vous avez appris le Christ, | 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; |
| 21 si du moins vous l'avez entendu, si vous avez été instruits à son égard, conformément à ce qui est la vérité en Jésus, | 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: |
| 22 à vous dépouiller, en ce qui concerne votre conduite antérieure, du vieil homme qui se corrompt en suivant les passions trompeuses (par les désirs de l'erreur), | 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; |
| 23 à vous renouveler quant à l'esprit de votre intelligence (âme), | 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; |
| 24 et à revêtir l'homme nouveau, créé selon Dieu dans la justice et la sainteté de la vérité. | 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. |
| 25 C'est pourquoi, renonçant au mensonge, dites chacun la vérité avec son prochain, parce que nous sommes membres les uns des autres. | 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. |
| 26 Si vous vous mettez en colère, ne péchez pas ; que le soleil ne se couche pas sur votre colère. | 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: |
| 27 Ne donnez pas prise au diable. | 27 Neither give place to the devil. |
| 28 Que celui qui dérobait ne dérobe plus, mais plutôt qu'il s'occupe en travaillant des mains à quelque chose de bon, pour avoir de quoi donner à celui qui est dans le besoin. | 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. |
| 29 Qu'aucune mauvaise parole ne sorte de votre bouche ; mais, s'il y a lieu, quelque bonne parole propre à nourrir la foi, afin qu'elle fasse du bien (donner la grâce) à ceux qui l'entendent. | 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. |
| 30 Et n'attristez pas l'Esprit-Saint de Dieu, par lequel vous avez été marqués d'un sceau pour le jour de la rédemption. | 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. |
| 31 Que toute aigreur, toute colère, tout emportement, toute clameur, toute injure (diffamation) soient bannis de vous, ainsi que toute méchanceté (malice). | 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: |
| 32 Soyez bons les uns pour les autres, miséricordieux, vous pardonnant mutuellement, comme Dieu aussi vous a pardonné dans le Christ. | 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. |
