| 2 Le riche et le pauvre se sont rencontrés ; c'est le Seigneur qui les a créés l'un et l'autre. | 2 The rich and poor have met one another. The Lord is the maker of them both. |
| 3 L'homme habile voit (a vu) le mal et se (s'est) cache(é), l'imprudent (le simple) (a) passe(é) outre, et (a) souffre (souffert) du dommage. | 3 The clever saw evil and hid himself. The innocent continued on and was afflicted with damage. |
| 4 Le fruit (La fin) de la modestie c'est la crainte du Seigneur, les richesses, et la gloire et la vie. | 4 The end of moderation is the fear of the Lord, riches and glory and life. |
| 5 Les armes et les glaives sont sur la voie des pervers ; mais celui qui garde son âme se retire (bien) loin d'eux. | 5 Weapons and swords are on the way of the perverse. But he who guards his own soul withdraws far from them. |
| 6 On dit en proverbe : Le jeune homme suit sa voie ; même lorsqu'il aura vieilli, il ne la quittera pas. | 6 The proverb is: A youth is close to his way; even when he is old, he will not withdraw from it. |
| 7 Le riche commande aux pauvres, et celui qui emprunte devient l'esclave du prêteur. | 7 The rich rule over the poor. And the borrower is servant to the lender. |
| 8 Celui qui sème l'injustice (iniquité) moissonnera les maux, et il sera brisé (détruit) par la verge de sa colère. | 8 Whoever sows iniquity will reap evils, and by the rod of his own wrath he will be consumed. |
| 9 Celui qui est porté à la miséricorde sera béni, car il a donné de ses (son) pain(s) aux pauvres. Celui qui fait des présents acquerra la victoire et l'honneur ; mais il ravit l'âme de ceux qui les reçoivent. | 9 Whoever is inclined to mercy shall be blessed, for from his bread he has given to the poor. Whoever gives gifts will acquire victory and honor. But he carries away the soul of the receiver. |
| 10 Chasse le railleur, et la dispute sortira avec lui ; alors les plaintes et les outrages cesseront. | 10 Cast out the one who ridicules, and conflict will go out with him, and accusations and insults will cease. |

| 13 Le paresseux dit : Il y a un lion dehors, je serai tué au milieu des rues. | 13 The lazy one says: “There is a lion outside. I might be slain in the midst of the streets.” |
| 14 La bouche de l'étrangère est une fosse profonde ; celui contre qui le Seigneur est irrité y tombera. | 14 The mouth of a foreign woman is a deep pit; the Lord was angry with him who will fall into it. |
| 15 La folie est liée au cœur de l'enfant, et la verge de la discipline l'en chassera. | 15 Foolishness has been bound to the heart of a child, and a rod of discipline shall cause it to flee. |
| 16 Celui qui calomnie le pauvre pour accroître ses richesses, donnera lui-même à un plus riche que lui, et sera dans l'indigence. | 16 Whoever slanders the poor, so as to augment his own riches, will give it away to one who is richer, and will be in need. |
| 17 Prête l'oreille, et écoute les paroles des sages, et applique ton cœur à ma doctrine. | 17 Incline your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Then apply your heart to my doctrine. |
| 18 Elle te paraîtra belle, lorsque tu la garderas au fond de ton cœur, et elle se répandra sur tes lèvres, | 18 It shall be beautiful to you, if you preserve it in your inner self, and it shall overflow from your lips, |
| 19 afin que tu mettes ta confiance dans le Seigneur : c'est pour cela que je te l'ai montrée aujourd'hui. | 19 so that your confidence may be in the Lord. Therefore, I also have revealed it to you this day. |
| 20 Je te l'ai décrite triplement, avec conseils (réflexion) et avec science, | 20 Behold, I have written it for you in three ways, and with meditations and knowledge, |
| 21 pour te faire voir la certitude des (et les) paroles de la vérité, afin qu'elles te servent à répondre à ceux qui t'ont envoyé. | 21 so that I might reveal to you, firmly and with words of truth, in order to respond about these things to those who sent you. |
| 22 Ne fais pas violence au pauvre parce qu'il est pauvre, et n'opprime pas l'indigent à la porte (de la ville), | 22 Do not act with violence toward the pauper because he is poor. And do not weary the needy at the gate. |
| 23 car le Seigneur défendra sa cause, et il (trans)percera ceux qui auront (trans)percé son âme. | 23 For the Lord will judge his case, and he will pierce those who have pierced his soul. |
| 24 Ne sois pas l'ami de l'homme emporté, et ne va pas avec le furieux ; | 24 Do not be willing to be a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man, |
| 25 de peur que tu n'apprennes à suivre ses sentiers, et que tu ne trouves du scandale pour ton âme. | 25 lest perhaps you learn his ways, and take up a stumbling block to your soul. |
| 26 Ne va pas avec ceux qui frappent dans la (engagent leurs) main(s), et qui s'offrent comme garants pour ceux qui doivent (se rendent caution des dettes) ; | 26 Do not be willing to be with those who certify with their hands, and who offer themselves as a guarantee against debts. |
| 27 car si tu n'as pas de quoi restituer, qui empêchera qu'on (quel motif y a-t-il pour qu'il) emporte la couverture de ton lit ? | 27 For if you do not have the means to restore, what reason should there be for him to take the covering from your bed? |
| 28 Ne dépasse pas les anciennes bornes qu'ont posées tes pères. | 28 Do not cross beyond the ancient limits that your fathers have set. |
| 29 As-tu vu un homme prompt en son œuvre ? Il se tiendra devant les rois, et non auprès des hommes obscurs. | 29 Have you seen a man swift in his work? He shall stand in the sight of kings, and not before those who are disreputable. |
