Proverbios 22

La Biblia Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Más vale fama que riqueza, | mejor estima que plata y oro.1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.
Rico y pobre tienen en común | que a los dos los hizo el Señor.2 The rich and the poor meet together; the LORD is the maker of them all.
El prudente ve el mal y se protege, | los incautos se arriesgan para su mal.3 A prudent man sees danger and hides himself; but the simple go on, and suffer for it.
Si eres humilde y temes al Señor | tendrás riquezas, vida y honor.4 The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life.
En la senda del perverso, espinas y trampas; | quien cuida de sí mismo se aleja de ellas.5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; he who guards himself will keep far from them.
Educa al muchacho en el buen camino: | cuando llegue a viejo seguirá por él.6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
El rico se hace dueño de los pobres; | el deudor, esclavo del acreedor.7 The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
Quien siembra maldad cosecha desgracia, | el ímpetu de su cólera se esfumará.8 He who sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail.
El hombre generoso será bendecido, | pues comparte su pan con el pobre.9 He who has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
Expulsa al insolente y acabarán las peleas, | habrán terminado riñas y ofensas.10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out, and quarreling and abuse will cease.
Al rey le gusta un corazón sincero, | se complace en quien habla con ingenio.11 He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.
Los ojos del Señor custodian el saber, | desbaratan las palabras del traidor.12 The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the faithless.
¡Fuera hay un león, dice el holgazán; | seré devorado en plena calle!13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!"
Trampa peligrosa la boca de la extraña, | en ella caerá quien rechaza al Señor.14 The mouth of a loose woman is a deep pit; he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.
La necedad se pega al corazón del joven, | la vara de la corrección la despegará.15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
Quien oprime al pobre lo enriquece, | quien da al rico se empobrece.16 He who oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to want.
Escucha y haz caso a las sentencias de los sabios, | presta atención a mi enseñanza;17 Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge;
te gustará guardarlas dentro, | tenerlas a punto en tus labios.18 for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.
Para que pongas tu confianza en el Señor | he pensado instruirte hoy.19 That your trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to you today, even to you.
Te he escrito treinta sentencias | en las que hay consejos sabios,20 Have I not written for you thirty sayings of admonition and knowledge,
para que puedas conocer la verdad, | y traer un informe preciso | a la persona que te dio un encargo.21 to show you what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?
No explotes al pobre por ser pobre | ni atropelles al desgraciado en el tribunal,22 Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate;
porque el Señor defenderá su causa | y despojará de la vida a los que lo despojan.23 for the LORD will plead their cause and despoil of life those who despoil them.
No tengas trato con el iracundo | ni busques la compañía del violento,24 Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man,
no sea que aprendas sus andanzas | y te pongas tú mismo una trampa.25 lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
No te acostumbres a dar la mano | ni a salir fiador de deudas;26 Be not one of those who give pledges, who become surety for debts.
pues si no tienes para pagar, | te quitarán la cama de debajo.27 If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?
No desplaces linderos antiguos | que pusieron tus antepasados.28 Remove not the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.
¿Conoces a alguien diestro en su oficio? | Entrará al servicio de reyes, | y no de gente mediocre.29 Do you see a man skillful in his work? he will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
