1 Samuel 20

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Huyó David de las celdas de Ramá y se fue a decir a Jonatán: «¿Qué he hecho, cuál es mi falta y en qué he pecado contra tu padre para que busque mi muerte?»	1 Fleeing from the huts at Ramah, David went and confronted Jonathan, 'What have I done, what is myguilt, how have I wronged your father, for him to want to take my life?'
2 Jonatán le dijo: «De ninguna manera, no morirás. Mi padre no hace ninguna cosa, grande o pequeña, sin descubrírmela; ¿por qué me había de ocultar mi padre este asunto? ¡No puede ser!»	2 He replied, 'You must not think that! You are not going to die. My father, you see, does nothing,important or unimportant, without confiding in me, so why should my father hide this from me? It is not true.'
3 Pero David volvió a jurar: «Save muy bien tu padre que me tienes mucho afecto y se ha dicho: “Que no lo sepa Jonatán para que no se apene.” Y, con todo, por Yahveh y por tu vida, que no hay más que un paso entre yo y la muerte».	3 In reply, David swore, 'Your father knows very wel that I enjoy your favour, and thinks, "Jonathanmust not know about this or he wil be upset." But, as Yahweh lives and as you yourself live, there is only a stepbetween me and death.'
4 Dijo Jonatán a David: «Dime lo que deseas y te lo haré».	4 At which, Jonathan said to David, 'Whatever you think best, I wil certainly do for you.'
5 Dijo David a Jonatán: «Mira, mañana es el novilunio; yo tendría que sentarme con el rey a comer, pero tú me dejarás marchar y me esconderé en el campo hasta la noche.	5 David replied, 'Look, tomorrow is New Moon and I ought to sit at table with the king, but you must letme go and hide in the countryside until the evening.
6 Si tu padre nota mi ausencia, dirás: “David me ha pedido con insistencia que le deje hacer una escapada a Belén, su ciudad, porque se celebra el sacrificio anual de toda la familia.”	6 If your father notices my absence, you must say, "David insistently asked me for permission to hurryover to Bethlehem, his home town, because they are holding the annual sacrifice there for the whole clan."
7 Si tu padre dice: “Está bien,” tu siervo está a salvo; pero si se enfurece, sabrás que por su parte está decretada la ruina.	7 If he says, "Very wel ," your servant is safe, but if he flies into a rage, you may be sure that he hassome evil plan.
8 Haz este favor a tu siervo ya que hiciste que tu siervo estableciera contigo alianza de Yahveh; si hay falta en mí, dame tú mismo la muerte; ¿para qué llevarme hasta tu padre?»	8 Show your servant faithful love, since you have bound your servant to you by a pact in Yahweh'sname. But if I am guilty, then kil me yourself -- why take me to your father?'
9 Respondió Jonatán: «¡Lojos de ti! Si yo supiera con certeza que por parte de mi padre está decretado que venga la ruina sobre ti, ¿no te lo avisaría?»	9 Jonathan replied, 'Perish the thought! If I knew for sure that my father was determined to do you amischief, would I not have told you?'
10 Respondió David a Jonatán: «¿Quién me avisará si tu padre te responde con aspereza?»	10 David then said to Jonathan, 'Who wil let me know if your father gives you a harsh answer?'
11 Respondió Jonatán a David: «Ven, salgamos al campo». Y salieron ambos al campo.	11 Jonathan then said to David, 'Come on, let us go out into the country,' and the pair of them went outinto the country.
12 Dijo Jonatán a David: «Por Yahveh, Dios de Israel, te juro que mañana a esta misma hora sondearé a mi padre; si la cosa se pone bien para David y no envío quien te lo haga saber,	12 Jonathan then said to David, 'By Yahweh, God of Israel! I shal sound my father this time tomorrow; ifal is wel for David and I do not then send and inform you,
13 que Yahveh haga esto a Jonatán y añada esto otro. Si mi padre decide hacerte mal, te lo haré saber para que te pongas a salvo y vayas en paz. Y que Yahveh sea contigo como lo fue con mi padre.	13 may Yahweh bring unnameable ills to Jonathan and worse ones too! If my father intends to do you amischief, I shal tel you so and let you get away, so that you can be safe. And may Yahweh be with you as heused to be with my father!
14 Si para entonces estoy vivo todavía, usa conmigo la bondad de Yahveh y, si muerto,	14 If I am stil alive, show your servant faithful love; if I die,
15 nunca apartes tu misericordia de mi casa. Y cuando Yahveh haya exterminado a los enemigos de David de la faz de la tierra,	15 never withdraw your faithful love from my family. When Yahweh has exterminated every enemy ofDavid's from the face of the earth,
16 que no sea exterminado Jonatán con la casa de Saúl; de lo contrario, que Yahveh pida cuentas a David».	16 do not let Jonathan's name be exterminated with Saul's family, or may Yahweh cal David toaccount!'
17 Juró de nuevo Jonatán a David por el amor que le tenía, pues le amaba como a sí mismo.	17 Jonathan then renewed his oath to David, since he loved him like his very soul.
18 Jonatán le dijo: «Mañana es novilunio y se notará tu ausencia, porque mirarán tu asiento.	18 Jonathan then said to David, 'Tomorrow is New Moon; your absence wil be noticed, since your placewil be empty.
19 Pasado mañana se notará más; tú irás al sitio en que te escondiste el día del suceso aquel, y te pones junto a la loma que tú sabes.	19 The day after tomorrow your absence wil be very marked, and you must go to the place where youhid on the day of the deed, and stay beside that mound.
20 Ese mismo día iré a lanzar flechas por esa parte, como para tirar al blanco.	20 For my part, the day after tomorrow I shal shoot three arrows in that direction, as though at a target.
21 Mandaré al muchacho: “Anda, busca la flecha.” Si digo al muchacho: “La flecha está más acá de ti, tómala,” vienes, porque todo va bien para ti y no hay nada, por Yahveh.	21 I shal then send a servant to go and find the arrows. If I say to him, "The arrows are this side of you,get them," come out, since al will be well for you and nothing the matter, as sure as Yahweh lives.
22 Pero si digo al muchacho: “La flecha está más allá de ti,” vete, porque Yahveh quiere que te vayas.	22 But if I say to him, "The arrows are ahead of you," then be off, for Yahweh himself wil be sendingyou away.
23 Cuanto a la palabra que tú y yo tenemos hablada, mira, Yahveh está entre los dos para siempre».	23 And as regards the agreement we made, you and I, why, Yahweh is witness between us for ever.'
24 David se escondió en el campo. Llegado el novilunio, el rey se puso a la mesa para comer.	24 So David hid in the country; New Moon came and the king sat down to his meal.
25 Se sentó el rey en su asiento, como de costumbre, en el asiento de la pared; Jonatán se sentó enfrente y Abner al lado de Saúl; el asiento de David quedó vacío.	25 He sat in his usual place with his back to the wall, Jonathan sat facing him and Abner sat next toSaul; but David's place was empty.
26 Saúl no dijo nada aquel día, porque pensó: «Será un accidente, no estará puro por no haberse purificado».	26 Saul said nothing that day, thinking, 'It is sheer chance; he is unclean.'
27 Al día siguiente del novilunio, el segundo día, se fijaron en el asiento de David, y Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán: ¿Por qué no ha venido a comer ni ayer ni hoy el hijo de Jesé?»	27 On the day after New Moon, the second day, David's place was stil empty.
28 Jonatán respondió a Saúl: «David me pidió con insistencia poder ir a Belén.	28 Saul said to his son Jonathan, 'Why did not the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday ortoday?'
29 Me dijo: “Déjame ir, por favor, porque es nuestro sacrificio de familia en la ciudad y mis hermanos me han reclamado. Así que, si he hallado gracia a tus ojos, déjame hacer una escapada para ver a mis hermanos.” Por esto no ha venido a la mesa del rey».	29 Jonathan answered Saul, 'David insistently asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. "Please letme go," he said, "for we are holding the clan sacrifice in the town and my brothers have ordered me to attend.So now, if I enjoy your favour, let me get away and see my brothers." That is why he has not come to the king'stable.'
30 Se encendió la cólera de Saúl contra Jonatán y le dijo: «¡Hijo de una perdida! ¿Acaso no sé yo que prefieres al hijo de Jesé para vergüenza tuya y vergüenza de la desnudez de tu madre?	30 Saul flew into a rage with Jonathan and said, 'Son of a rebel ious slut! Don't I know that you side withthe son of Jesse to your own shame and your mother's dishonour?
31 Pues mientras viva sobre el suelo el hijo de Jesé, no estarás a salvo ni tú ni tu realeza; así que manda a buscarlo y tráemelo, porque es reo de muerte».	31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your royal rights are secure. Now havehim fetched and brought to me; he deserves to die.'
32 Respondió Jonatán a su padre Saúl y le dijo: «¿Por qué ha de morir? ¿Qué ha hecho?»	32 Jonathan retorted to his father Saul, 'Why should he die? What has he done?'
33 Blandió Saúl su lanza contra él para herirle y comprendió Jonatán que por parte de su padre la muerte de David era cosa decidida.	33 But Saul brandished his spear at him to strike him, and Jonathan realised that his father wasdetermined that David should die.
34 Se levantó Jonatán de la mesa ardiendo en ira y no comió el segundo día del novilunio, pues estaba afligido por David, porque su padre le había injuriado.	34 Hot with anger, Jonathan got up from the table and ate nothing on the second day of the month,being upset about David -- and because his father had insulted him.
35 A la mañana siguiente salió Jonatán con un muchacho al campo, a la hora acordada con David.	35 Next morning, Jonathan went out into the country at the time agreed with David, taking a youngservant with him.
36 Dijo al muchacho: «Corre a buscar las flechas que voy a tirar». Corrió el muchacho, y entonces Jonatán lanzó las flechas más allá de él.	36 He said to his servant, 'Run and find the arrows which I am going to shoot,' and the servant ran whileJonathan shot an arrow ahead of him.
37 Cuando el muchacho llegaba al lugar donde había lanzado la flecha Jonatán, éste gritó detrás de él: «¿ Acaso no está la flecha más allá de ti?»,	37 When the servant reached the spot to which Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan shouted afterhim, 'Is not the arrow ahead of you?'
38 y siguió gritando detrás del muchacho: «Pronto, date prisa, no te detengas». Tomó el muchacho de Jonatán la flecha y volvió donde su señor.	38 Again Jonathan shouted after the servant, 'Quick! Hurry, do not stand around.' Jonathan's servantpicked up the arrow and brought it back to his master.
39 El muchacho no se enteró de nada. Solamente lo entendían Jonatán y David.	39 The servant suspected nothing; only Jonathan and David knew what was meant.
40 Dio Jonatán sus armas al muchacho que estaba con él y le dijo: «Anda, llévalas a la ciudad».	40 Jonathan then gave his weapons to his servant and said, 'Go and carry them to the town.'
41 Se marchó el muchacho y David se levantó de junto a la loma y, cayendo sobre su rostro en tierra, se postró tres veces. Se abrazaron los dos y lloraron copiosamente.	41 As soon as the servant had gone, David stood up beside the mound, threw himself to the ground,prostrating himself three times. They then embraced each other, both weeping copiously.
42 Dijo Jonatán a David: Vete en paz, ya que nos hemos jurado en nombre de Yahveh: “Que Yahveh esté entre tú y yo, entre mi descendencia y la tuya para siempre.”»	42 Jonathan then said to David, 'Go in peace. And as regards the oath that both of us have sworn bythe name of Yahweh, may Yahweh be witness between you and me, between your descendants and mine forever.'
