1 En mencionado Simón, delator de los tesoros y de la patria, calumniaba a Onías como si éste hubiera maltratado a Heliodoro y fuera el causante de sus desgracias;	1 This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he ha terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.
2 y se atrevía a decir que el bienhechor de la ciudad, el defensor de sus compatriotas y celoso observante de las leyes, era un conspirador contra el Estado.	2 Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws.
3 A tal punto llegó la hostilidad, que hasta se cometieron asesinatos por parte de uno de los esbirros de Simón.	3 But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed,
4 Considerando Onías que aquella rivalidad era intolerable y que Apolonio, hijo de Menesteo, estratega de Celesira y Fenicia, instigaba a Simón al mal,	4 Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice,
5 se hizo llevar donde el rey, no porque pretendiera acusar a sus conciudadanos, sino que miraba por los intereses generales y particulares de toda su gente.	5 He went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both publick and private:
6 Pues bien veía que sin la intervención real era ya imposible pacificar la situación y detener a Simón en sus locuras.	6 For he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto.
7 Cuando Seleuco dejó esta vida y Antíoco, por sobrenombre Epífanes, comenzó a reinar, Jasón, el hermano de Onías, usurpó el sumo pontificado,	7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest,
8 después de haber prometido al rey, en una conversación, 360 talentos de plata y ochenta talentos de otras rentas.	8 Promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents:
9 Se comprometía además a firmar el pago de otro 150, si se le concedía la facultad de instalar por su propia cuenta un gimnasio y una efebía, así como la de inscribir a los Antioquenos en Jerusalén.	9 Beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians.
10 Con el consentimiento del rey y con los poderes en su mano, pronto cambió las costumbres de sus compatriotas conforme al estilo griego.	10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule he forthwith brought his own nation to Greekish fashion.
11 Suprimiendo los privilegios que los reyes habían concedido a los judíos por medio de Juan, padre de Eupólemo, el que fue enviado en embajada a los romanos para un tratado de amistad y alianza, y abrogando las instituciones legales, introdujo costumbres nuevas, contrarias a la Ley.	11 And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law:
12 Así pues, fundó a su gusto un gimnasio bajo la misma acrópolis e indujo a lo mejor de la juventud a educarse bajo el petaso.	12 For he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat.
13 Era tal el auge del helenismo y el progreso de la moda extranjera a causa de la extrema perversidad de aquel Jasón, que tenía más de impío que de sumo sacerdote,	13 Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest;
14 que ya los sacerdotes no sentían celo por el servicio del altar, sino que despreciaban el Templo; descuidando los sacrificios, en cuanto se daba la señal con el gong se apresuraban a tomar parte en los ejercicios de la palestra contrarios a la ley;	14 That the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth;
15 sin apreciar en nada la honra patria, tenían por mejores las glorias helénicas.	15 Not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all.
16 Por esto mismo, una difícil situación les puso en aprieto, y tuvieron como enemigos y verdugos a los mismos cuya conducta emulaban y a quienes querían parecerse en todo.	16 By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things.
17 Pues no resulta fácil violar las leyes divinas; así lo mostrará el tiempo venidero.	17 For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God: but the time following shall declare these things.
18 Cuando se celebraron en Tiro los juegos cuadrienales, en presencia del rey,	18 Now when the game that was used every faith year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present,
19 el impuro Jasón envió embajadores, como Antioquenos de Jerusalén, que llevaban consigo trescientas dracmas de plata para el sacrificio de Hércules. Pero los portadores prefirieron, dado que no convenía, no emplearlas en el sacrificio, sino en otros gastos.	19 This ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges.
20 Y así, el dinero que estaba destinado por voluntad del que lo enviaba, al sacrificio de Hércules, se empleó por deseo de los portadores, en la construcción de las trirremes.	20 This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof, it was employed to the making of gallies.
21 Apolonio, hijo de Menesteo, fue enviado a Egipto para la boda del rey Filométor. Cuando supo Antíoco que aquél se había convertido en su adversario político se preocupó de su propia seguridad; por eso, pasando por Joppe, se presentó en Jerusalén.	21 Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppa, and from thence to Jerusalem:
22 Fue magníficamente recibido por Jasón y por la ciudad, e hizo su entrada entre antorchas y aclamaciones. Después de esto llevó sus tropas hasta Fenicia.	22 Where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch alight, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice.
23 Tres años después, Jasón envió a Menelao, hermano del ya mencionado Simón, para llevar el dinero al rey y gestionar la negociación de asuntos urgentes.	23 Three years afterward Jason sent Menelans, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters.
24 Menelao se hizo presentar al rey, a quien impresionó con su aire majestuoso, y logró ser investido del sumo sacerdocio, ofreciendo trescientos talentos de plata más que Jasón.	24 But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.
25 Provisto del mandato real, se volvió sin poseer nada digno del sumo sacerdocio, sino más bien el furor de un cruel tirano y la furia de una bestia salvaje.	25 So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.
26 Jasón, por su parte, suplantador de su propio hermano y él mismo suplantado por otro, se vio forzado a huir al país de Ammán.	26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites.
27 Menelao detentaba ciertamente el poder, pero nada pagaba del dinero prometido al rey,	27 So Menelans got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratis the ruler of the castle required it:
28 aunque Sóstrates, el alcaide de la Acrópolis, se lo reclamaba, pues a él correspondía la percepción de los tributos. Por este motivo, ambos fueron convocados por el rey.	28 For unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king.
29 Menelao dejó como sustituto del sumo sacerdocio a su hermano Lisímaco; Sóstrates a Crates, jefe de los chipriotas. a Crates, jefe de los chipriotas.	29 Now Menelans left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood; and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians.
30 Mientras tanto, sucedió que los habitantes de Tarso y de Malos se sublevaron por haber sido cedidas sus ciudades como regalo a Antioquida, la concubina del rey.	30 While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochus.
31 Fue, pues, el rey a toda prisa, para poner orden en la situación, dejando como sustituto a Andrónico, uno de los dignatarios.	31 Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy.
32 Menelao pensó aprovecharse de aquella buena oportunidad; arrebató algunos objetos de oro del Templo, y se los regaló a Andrónico; también logró vender otros en Tiro y en las ciudades de alrededor.	32 Now Menelans, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about.
33 Cuando Onías llegó a saberlo con certeza, se lo reprochó, no sin haberse retirado antes a un lugar de refugio, a Dafne, cerca de Antioquía.	33 Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia.
34 Por eso, Menelao, a solas con Andrónico, le incitaba a matar a Onías. Andrónico se llegó donde Onías, y, confiando en la astucia, estrechándole la mano y dándole la diestra con juramento, perusadió a Onías, aunque a éste no le faltaban sospechas, a salir de su refugio, e inmediatamente le dio muerte, sin respeto alguno a la justicia.	34 Wherefore Menelans, taking Andronicus apart, prayed, him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard of justice.
35 Por este motivo no sólo los judíos sino también muchos de las demás naciones se indignaron y se irritaron por el injusto asesinato de aquel hombre.	35 For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man.
36 Cuando el rey volvió de las regiones de Cilicia, los judíos de la ciudad junto con los griegos, que también odiaban el mal, fueron a su encuentro a quejarse de la injustificada muerte de Onías.	36 And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause.
37 Antíoco, hondamente estristecido y movido a compasión, lloró recordando la prudencia y la gran moderación del difunto.	37 Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead.
38 Encendido en ira, despojó inmediatamente a Andrónico, de la púrpura y desgarró sus vestidos. Le hizo conducir por toda la ciudad hasta el mismo lugar donde tan impíamente había tratado a Onías; allí hizo desaparecer de este mundo al criminal, a quien el Señor daba el merecido castigo.	38 And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved.
39 Lisímaco había cometido muchos robos sacrílegos en la ciudad con el consentimiento de Menelao, y la noticia se había divulgado fuera; por eso la multitud se amotinó contra Lisímaco. Pero eran ya muchos los objetos de oro que estaban dispersos.	39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelans, and the fruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away.
40 Como las turbas estaban excitadas y en el colmo de su cólera, Lisímaco armó a cerca de 3.000 hombres e inició la represión violenta, poniendo por jefe a un tal Aurano, avanzado en edad y no menos en locura.	40 Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly.
41 Cuando se dieron cuenta del ataque de Lisímaco, unos se armaron de piedras, otros de estacas y otros, tomando a puñadas ceniza que allí había, lo arrojaban todo junto contra las tropas de Lisímaco.	41 They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them.
42 De este modo hirieron a muchos de ellos, y mataron a algunos; a todos los demás los pusieron en fuga, y al mismo ladrón sacrílego le mataron junto al Tesoro.	42 Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury.
43 Sobre todos estos hechos se instruyó proceso contra Menelao.	43 Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelans.
44 Cuando el rey llegó a Tiro, tres hombres enviados por el Senado expusieron ante él el alegato.	44 Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him:
45 Menelao, perdido ya, prometió una importante suma a Tolomeo, hijo de Dorimeno, para que persuadiera al rey.	45 But Menelans, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him.
46 Entonces Tolomeo, llevando al rey aparte a una galería como para tomar el aire, le hizo cambiar de parecer,	46 Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind:
47 de modo que absolvió de las acusaciones a Menelao, el causante de todos los males, y, en cambio, condenó a muerte a aquellos infelices que hubieran sido absueltos, aun cuando hubieran declarado ante un tribunal de escitas.	47 Insomuch that he discharged Menelans from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death.
48 Así que, sin dilación, sufrieron aquella injusta pena los que habían defendido la causa de la ciudad, del pueblo y de los vasos sagrados.	48 Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.
49 Por este motivo, algunos tirios, indignados contra aquella iniquidad, prepararon con magnificencia su sepultura.	49 Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried.
50 Menelao, por su parte, por la avaricia de aquellos gobernantes, permaneció en el poder, creciendo en maldad, constituido en el principal adversario de sus conciudadanos.	50 And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelans remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens.
