2 Macabeos 14

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Después de tres años de intervalo, los hombres de Judas supieron que Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, había atracado en el puerto de Trípoli con un fuerte ejército y una flota,	1 Three years after this, Judas and his men learned that Demetrius son of Seleucus had landed at theport of Tripolis with a strong army and a fleet,
2 y que se había apoderado de la región, después de haber dado muerte a Antíoco y a su tutor Lisias.	2 and that he had occupied the country and had killed Antiochus and his tutor Lysias.
3 Un tal Alcimo, que antes había sido sumo sacerdote, pero que se había contaminado voluntariamente en tiempo de la rebelión, pensando que de ninguna forma había para él salvación ni acceso posible al altar sagrado,	3 A certain Alcimus, a former high priest, had wilful y incurred defilement at the time of the insurrection;realising that whichever way he turned there was no security for him, nor any further access to the holy altar,
4 fue al encuentro del rey Demetrio, hacia el año 151, y le ofreció una corona de oro, una palma, y además, los rituales ramos de olivo del Templo. Y por aquel día no hizo más.	4 he went to King Demetrius in about the year one hundred and fifty-one and presented him with agolden crown and a palm, together with the traditional olive branches from the Temple; there, for that day, he letthe matter rest.
5 Pero encontró una ocasión propicia para su demencia, al ser llamado por Demetrio a consejo y al ser preguntado sobre las disposiciones y designios de los judíos.	5 Presently he found an opportunity to further his mad plan. When Demetrius cal ed him into his counciland questioned him about the dispositions and intentions of the Jews, he replied,
6 Respondió: «Los judíos llamados asideos, encabezados por Judas Macabeo, fomentan guerras y rebeliones, para no dejar que el reino viva en paz.	6 'Those Jews called Hasidaeans, who are led by Judas Maccabaeus, are war-mongers and rebels whoare preventing the kingdom from finding stability.
7 Por eso aunque despojado de mi dignidad ancestral, me refiero al sumo sacerdocio, he venido aquí	7 That is why, after being deprived of my hereditary dignity -- I mean the high priesthood -- I have comehere now,
8 en primer lugar con verdadera preocupación por los intereses del rey, y en segundo lugar, con la mirada puesta en mis propios compatriotas, pues por la locura de los hombres que he mencionado, toda nuestra raza padece no pocos males.	8 first out of genuine concern for the king's interests, and secondly, out of a regard for our own fellow-citizens, because the irresponsible behaviour of those I have mentioned has brought no slight misery on ourentire race.
9 Informado con detalle de todo esto, ¡oh rey!, mira por nuestro país y por nuestra nación por todas partes asediada, con esa accesible benevolencia que tienes para todos;	9 When your majesty has taken note of al these points, may it please you to make provision for thewelfare of our country and our oppressed nation, as befits the gracious benevolence you extend to al ;
10 pues mientras Judas subsista, le es imposible al Estado alcanzar la paz».	10 for, as long as Judas remains alive, the State wil never enjoy peace.'
11 En cuanto él dijo esto, los demás amigos que sentían aversión hacia lo de Judas, se apresuraron a encender más el ánimo de Demetrio.	11 No sooner had he spoken thus than the rest of the King's Friends, who were hostile to Judas'activities, stoked Demetrius' anger.
12 Designó inmediatamente a Nicanor, que había llegado a ser elefantarca, le nombró estratega de Judea y le envió	12 The latter at once selected Nicanor, then commander of the elephants, promoted him to thecommand of Judaea and despatched him
13 con órdenes de hacer morir a Judas, dispersar a todos sus hombres y restablecer a Alcimo como sumo sacerdote del más grande de los templos.	13 with instructions to dispose of Judas, disperse his followers and instal Alcimus as high priest of thegreatest of temples.
14 Los gentiles de Judea, fugitivos de Judas, se unieron en masa a Nicanor, imaginándose que las desgracias y reveses de los judíos serían sus propios éxitos.	14 The foreigners in Judaea, who had fled before Judas, flocked to join Nicanor, thinking that themisfortunes and troubles of the Jews would be to their own advantage.
15 Al tener noticia de la expedición de Nicanor y del asalto de los gentiles, esparcieron sobre sí polvo e imploraron a Aquél que por siempre había establecido a su pueblo y que siempre protegía a su propia heredad con sus manifestaciones.	15 When the Jews heard that Nicanor was coming and that the foreigners were about to attack, theysprinkled dust over themselves and made supplication to him who had established his people for ever and whonever failed to support his own heritage by direct manifestations.
16 Por orden de su jefe, salieron inmediatamente de allí y trabaron lucha con ellos junto al pueblo de Dessáu.	16 On their leader's orders, they at once left the place where they were and confronted the enemy atthe vil age of Dessau.
17 Simón, hermano de Judas, había entablado combate con Nicanor, pero, a causa de la repentina llegada de los enemigos, sufrió un ligero revés.	17 Simon, brother of Judas, engaged Nicanor but, owing to the sudden arrival of the enemy, suffered aslight reverse.
18 Pero con todo, Nicanor, al tener noticia de la bravura de los hombres de Judas y del valor con que combatían por su patria, temía resolver la situación por la sangre.	18 Nicanor, however, had heard how brave Judas and his men were and how resolutely they alwaysfought for their country, and he did not dare al ow bloodshed to decide the issue.
19 Por este motivo envió a Posidonio, Teodoto y Matatías para concertar la paz.	19 And so he sent Posidonius, Theodotus and Mattathias to offer the Jews pledges of friendship and toaccept theirs.
20 Después de maduro examen de las condiciones, el jefe se las comunicó a las tropas y, ante el parecer unánime, aceptaron el tratado.	20 After careful consideration of his terms, the leader communicated them to his troops, and since theywere all clearly of one mind they agreed to the treaty.
21 Fijaron la fecha en que se reunirían los jefes en privado. Se adelantó un vehículo de cada lado y prepararon asientos.	21 A day was fixed on which the respective leaders were to meet as individuals. A litter came out fromeither side and seats were set up.
22 Judas dispuso en lugares estratégicos hombres armados, preparados para el caso de que se produjera alguna repentina traición de parte enemiga. Tuvieron la entrevista en buen acuerdo.	22 Judas had posted armed men in strategic positions, in case of a sudden treacherous move by theenemy. The leaders held their conference and reached agreement.
23 Nicanor pasó algún tiempo en Jerusalén sin hacer nada inoportuno y despidió a las turbas que, en masa, se le habían reunido.	23 Nicanor took up residence in Jerusalem and did nothing out of place there; indeed, he sent away thecrowds that had flocked to join him.
24 Siempre tenía a Judas consigo; sentía una cordial inclinación hacia este hombre.	24 He kept Judas constantly with him, becoming deeply attached to him
25 Le aconsejó que se casara y tuviera descendencia. Judas se casó, vivió con tranquilidad, y disfrutó de la vida.	25 and encouraged him to marry and have children. Judas married, settled down and led a normal life.
26 Alcimo, al ver la recíproca comprensión, se hizo con una copia del acuerdo concluido y se fue donde Demetrio. Le decía que Nicanor tenía sentimientos contrarios a los intereses del Estado, pues había designado como sucesor suyo a Judas, el conspirador contra el reino.	26 When Alcimus saw how friendly the two men had become, he went to Demetrius with a copy of thetreaty they had signed and told him that Nicanor was harbouring thoughts against the interests of the State, andwas planning that Judas, an enemy of the realm, should fil the next vacancy among the Friends of the King.
27 Fuera de sí el rey, excitado por las calumnias de aquel maligno, escribió a Nicanor comunicándole que estaba disgustado con el acuerdo y ordenándole que inmediatamente mandara encadenado a Macabeo a Antioquía.	27 The king flew into a rage; roused by the slanders of this villain, he wrote to Nicanor, tel ing him of hisstrong displeasure at these agreements and ordering him immediately to send Maccabaeus to Antioch in chains.
28 Cuando Nicanor recibió la comunicación, quedó consternado, pues le desagradaba mucho tener que anular lo convenido, sin que hubiera cometido aquel hombre injusticia alguna.	28 When the letter reached Nicanor, he was very much upset, for he disliked the prospect of breakingan agreement with a man who had done nothing wrong.
29 Pero, como no era posible oponerse al rey, aguardaba la oportunidad de ejecutar la orden con alguna estratagema.	29 Since, however, there was no way of opposing the king, he waited for an opportunity to carry out theorder by a stratagem.
30 Cuando Macabeo, por su parte, notó que Nicanor se portaba más secamente con él y que le trataba con más frialdad en sus habituales relaciones, pensó que tal sequedad no procedía de las mejores disposiciones. Reunió a muchos de los suyos y procuró ocultarse de Nicanor.	30 Maccabaeus began to notice that Nicanor was treating him more sharply and that his manner ofspeaking to him was more abrupt than it had been, and he concluded that such sharpness could have no verygood motive. He therefore collected a considerable number of his fol owers and got away from Nicanor.
31 Este otro, al darse cuenta de que aquel hombre le había vencido con nobleza, se presentó en el más grande y santo Templo en el momento en que los sacerdotes ofrecían los sacrificios rituales y les exigió que le entregaran a aquel hombre.	31 The latter, realising that the man had wel and truly outmanoeuvred him, went to the greatest andholiest of Temples when the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and ordered them to surrenderJudas.
32 Aseguraron ellos con juramento que no sabían dónde estaba el hombre que buscaba.	32 When they protested on oath that they did not know where the wanted man could be,
33 Entonces él extendiendo la diestra hacia el santuario, hizo este juramento: «Si no me entregáis encadenado a Judas, arrasaré este recinto sagrado de Dios, destruiré el altar, y aquí mismo levantaré un espléndido Templo a Dióniso».	33 he stretched out his right hand towards the Temple and swore this oath, 'If you do not hand Judasover to me as prisoner, I shal rase this dwelling of God to the ground, I shal demolish the altar, and on this veryspot I shal erect a splendid temple to Dionysus.'
34 Y, dicho esto, se fue. Los sacerdotes con las manos tendidas al cielo, invocaban a Aquél que sin cesar había combatido en favor de nuestra nación, diciendo:	34 With these words he left them. The priests stretched out their hands to heaven, cal ing on him whohas at al times done battle for our nation; this was their prayer:
35 «Tú, Señor, que nada necesitas, te has complacido en que el santuario de tu morada se halle entre nosotros.	35 'O Lord in need of nothing, it has pleased you that the Temple where you dwel should be here withus.
36 También ahora, Señor santo de toda santidad, preserva siempre limpia de profanación esta Casa recién purificada».	36 Now, therefore, holy Lord of al holiness, preserve for ever from all profanation this House, so newlypurified.'
37 Razías, uno de los ancianos de Jerusalén, fue denunciado a Nicanor. Era hombre amante de sus conciudadanos, muy bien considerado, llamado por su buen corazón «Padre de los judíos»,	37 Now, a man cal ed Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, was denounced to Nicanor. He was a manwho loved his countrymen and stood high in their esteem, and he was known as the father of the Jews becauseof his kindness.
38 pues, en los tiempos que precedieron a la sublevación, había sido acusado de Judaísmo, y por el Judaísmo había expuesto cuerpo y vida con gran constancia.	38 In the earlier days of the insurrection he had been convicted of Judaism, and he had risked both lifeand limb for Judaism with the utmost zeal.
39 Queriendo Nicanor hacer patente la hostilidad que le embargaba hacia los judíos, envió más de quinientos soldados para arrestarlo,	39 Nicanor, by way of demonstrating the enmity he had for the Jews, sent over five hundred soldiers toarrest him,
40 pues le parecía que arrestándole causaba un gran perjuicio a los judíos.	40 reckoning that if he eliminated this man he would be dealing them a severe blow.
41 Cuando las tropas estaban a punto de apoderarse de la torre, forzando la puerta del patio y con orden de prender fuego e incendiar las puertas, Razías, acosado por todas partes, se echó sobre la espada.	41 When the troops were on the point of capturing the tower and were forcing the outer door and cal ingfor fire to set the doors alight, Razis, finding himself completely surrounded, fel on his own sword,
42 Prefirió noblemente la muerte antes que caer en manos criminales y soportar afrentas indignas de su nobleza.	42 nobly resolving to die rather than fal into the clutches of these villains and suffer outrages unworthyof his noble birth.
43 Pero, como por la precipitación del combate no había acertado al herirse y las tropas irrumpían puertas adentro, subió valerosamente a lo alto del muro y se precipitó con bravura sobre las tropas;	43 But in the heat of conflict he missed his thrust, and while the troops swarmed in through thedoorways, he ran nimbly upstairs to the parapet and manfully threw himself down among the troops.
44 pero al retroceder éstas rápidamente, dejando un hueco, vino él a caer en medio del espacio libre.	44 But, as they immediately drew back, he fell into the middle of the empty space.
45 Con aliento todavía y enardecido su ánimo, se levantó derramando sangre a torrentes; a pesar de las graves heridas, atravesó corriendo por entre las tropas, y se puso sobre una roca escarpada.	45 Stil breathing, and blazing with anger, he struggled to his feet, blood spurting in al directions, anddespite his terrible wounds ran right through the crowd; then, taking his stand on a steep rock,
46 Ya completamente exangüe, se arrancó las entrañas y tomándolas con ambas manos, las arrojó contra las tropas. Y después de invocar al Dueño de la vida y del espíritu que otra vez se dignara devolvérselas, llegó de este modo al tránsito.	46 although he had now lost every drop of blood, he tore out his entrails and taking them in both handsflung them down on the crowd, cal ing on the Master of his life and spirit to give them back to him one day. Thushe died.
