1 Estos son los nombres de los israelitas que entraron con Jacob en Egipto, cada uno con su familia:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 El número de los descendientes de Jacob era de setenta personas. José estaba ya en Egipto.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación;	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 pero los israelitas fueron fecundos y se multiplicaron; llegaron a ser muy numerosos y fuertes y llenaron el país.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 Se alzó en Egipto un nuevo rey, que nada sabía de José;	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 y que dijo a su pueblo: «Mirad, los israelitas son un pueblo más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros.	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Tomemos precauciones contra él para que no siga multiplicándose, no sea que en caso de guerra se una también él a nuestros enemigos para luchar contra nosotros y salir del país.»	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Les impusieron pues, capataces para aplastarlos bajo el peso de duros trabajos; y así edificaron para Faraón las ciudades de depósito: Pitom y Ramsés.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Pero cuanto más les oprimían, tanto más crecían y se multiplicaban, de modo que los egipcios llegaron a temer a los israelitas.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 Y redujeron a cruel servidumbre a los israelitas,	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 les amargaron la vida con rudos trabajos de arcilla y ladrillos, con toda suerte de labores del campo y toda clase de servidumbre que les imponían por crueldad.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 El rey de Egipto dio también orden a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifrá, y la otra Puá,	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 diciéndoles: «Cuando asistáis a las hebreas, observad bien las dos piedras: si es niño, hacedle morir; si es niña dejadla con vida.»	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Pero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron lo que les había mandado el rey de Egipto, sino que dejaban con vida a los niños.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 Llamó el rey de Egipto a las parteras y les dijo: «¿ Por qué habéis hecho esto y dejáis con vida a los niños?»	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Respondieron las parteras a Faraón: «Es que las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son más robustas, y antes que llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz.»	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Y Dios favoreció a las parteras. El pueblo se multiplicó y se hizo muy poderoso.	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 Y por haber temido las parteras a Dios, les concedió numerosa prole.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Entonces Faraón dio a todo su pueblo esta orden: «Todo niño que nazca lo echaréis al Río; pero a las niñas las dejaréis con vida.»	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
