Judit 7

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Al día siguiente ordenó Holofernes a todo su ejército y a todos los pueblos que iban como tropas auxiliares mover el campo contra Betulia, ocupar los accesos de la montaña y comenzar las hostilidades contra los israelitas.	1 The fol owing day Holofernes issued orders to his whole army and to the whole host of auxiliaries whohad joined him, to break camp and march on Bethulia, to occupy the mountain passes and so open thecampaign against the Israelites.
2 El mismo día levantaron el campo todos los hombres de su ejército; el número de sus guerreros era de 120.000 infantes y 12.000 jinetes, sin contar los encargados del bagaje y la gran cantidad de hombres que iban a pie con ellos.	2 The troops broke camp that same day. The actual fighting force numbered one hundred and twentythousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry, not to mention the baggage train with the vast number of men onfoot concerned with that.
3 Acamparon en el valle que hay cerca de Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron en profundidad desde Dotán hasta Belbáin, y en longitud desde Betulia hasta Kiamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.	3 They penetrated the val ey in the neighbourhood of Bethulia, near the spring, and deployed on a widefront from Dothan to Balbaim and, in depth, from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.
4 Cuando los israelitas vieron su muchedumbre, quedaron sobrecogidos y se dijeron unos a otros: «Estos ahora van a arrasar toda la tierra y ni los montes más altos ni los barrancos ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».	4 When the Israelites saw this horde, they were al appal ed and said to each other, 'Now they wil lick thewhole country clean. Not even the loftiest peaks, the gorges or the hil s wil be able to stand the weight of them.'
5 Tomó cada cual su equipo de guerra, encendieron hogueras en las torres y permanecieron sobre las armas toda aquella noche.	5 Each man snatched up his arms; they lit beacons on their towers and spent the whole night on watch.
6 Al segundo día, Holofernes hizo desfilar toda su caballería ante los israelitas que había en Betulia.	6 On the second day Holofernes deployed his entire cavalry in sight of the Israelites in Bethulia.
7 Inspeccionó todas las subidas de la ciudad, reconoció las fuentes y las ocupó, dejando en ellas guarniciones de soldados; y él se volvió donde su ejército.	7 He reconnoitred the slopes leading up to the town, located the water-points, seized them and postedpickets over them and returned to the main body.
8 Se acercaron entonces a él los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes de los moabitas y los generales del litoral, y le dijeron:	8 The chieftains of the sons of Esau, al the leaders of the Moabites and the generals of the coastal districtthen came to him and said,
9 «Que nuestro señor escuche una palabra y no habrá ni un solo herido en tu ejército.	9 'If our master wil be pleased to listen to us, his forces wil not sustain a single wound.
10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía tanto en sus lanzas como en las alturas de los montes en que habitan. De hecho no es fácil escalar la cumbre de estos montes.	10 These Israelites do not rely so much on their spears as on the height of the mountains where they live.And admittedly it is not at all easy to scale these heights of theirs.
11 «Por eso, señor, no pelees contra ellos en el orden de batalla acostumbrado, para que no caiga ni un solo hombre de los tuyos.	11 'This being the case, master, avoid engaging them in a pitched battle and then you wil not lose a singleman.
12 Quédate en el campamento y conserva todos los hombres de tu ejército. Que tus siervos se apoderen de la fuente que brota en la falda de la montaña,	12 Stay in camp, keep al your troops there too, while your servants seize the spring which rises at the footof the mountain,
13 porque de ella se abastecen todos los habitantes de Betulia. La sed los destruirá y tendrán que entregarte la ciudad. Nosotros y nuestro pueblo ocuparemos las alturas de los montes cercanos y acamparemos en ellas, vigilando para que no salga de la ciudad ni un solo hombre.	13 since that is what provides the population of Bethulia with their water supply. Thirst wil then force themto surrender their town. Meanwhile, we and our men wil climb the nearest mountain tops and form advanceposts there to prevent anyone from leaving the town.
14 Ellos, sus mujeres y sus hijos, serán consumidos por el hambre y, aun antes de que la espada les alcance, caerán tendidos por las plazas de su ciudad.	14 Hunger wil waste them, with their wives and children, and before the sword can reach them they wilalready be lying in the streets outside their houses.
15 Entonces les impondrás un duro castigo por haberse rebelado y no haber salido a tu encuentro en son de paz».	15 And you will make them pay dearly for their defiance and their refusal to meet you peaceably.'
16 Parecieron bien estos consejos a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y ordenó que se ejecutara lo que proponían.	16 Their words pleased Holofernes as wel as al his officers, and he decided to do as they suggested.
17 Se puso en marcha el ejército moabita, reforzado por 5.000 asirios, acamparon en el valle y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de las fuentes de los israelitas.	17 Accordingly, a troop of Moabites moved forward with a further five thousand Assyrians. Theypenetrated the val ey and seized the Israelites' waterpoints and springs.
18 Los edomitas y ammonitas, por su parte, acamparon en el monte, frente a Dotán, y enviaron destacamentos hacia el sur y el este, frente a Egrebel, que está al lado de Jus, sobre el torrente Mojmur. El resto del ejército asirio quedó acampado en la llanura y cubría toda la superficie del suelo. Sus tiendas y bagajes formaban un campamento inmenso, porque eran una enorme muchedumbre.	18 Meanwhile the Edomites and Ammonites went and took up positions in the highlands opposite Dothan,sending some of their men to the south-east opposite Egrebel near Chous on the Wadi Mochmur. The rest of theAssyrian army took up positions in the plain, covering every inch of the ground; their tents and equipment madean immense encampment, so vast were their numbers.
19 Clamaron los israelitas al Señor su Dios, pues su ánimo empezaba a flaquear, viendo que el enemigo les había cercado y cortado toda retirada.	19 The Israelites cal ed on the Lord their God, dispirited because the enemy had surrounded them and cutal line of retreat.
20 34 días estuvieron cercados por todo el ejército asirio, infantes, carros y jinetes. A todos las habitantes de Betulia se les acabaron las reservas de agua;	20 For thirty-four days the Assyrian army, infantry, chariots, cavalrymen, had them surrounded. Everywater-jar the inhabitants of Bethulia had was empty,
21 las cisternas se agotaron; ni un solo día podían beber a satisfacción, porque se les daba el agua racionada.	21 their storage-wel s were drying up; on no day could a man drink his fil , since their water was rationed.
22 Los niños aparecían abatidos, las mujeres y los adolescentes desfallecían de sed y caían en las plazas y a las salidas de las puertas de la ciudad, faltos de fuerzas.	22 Their little children pined away, the women and young men grew weak with thirst; they col apsed in the streets and gateways of the town; they had no strength left.
23 Todo el pueblo, los adolescentes, las mujeres y los niños, se reunieron en torno a Ozías y a los jefes de la ciudad y clamaron a grandes voces, diciendo delante de los ancianos:	23 Young men, women, children, the whole people thronged clamouring round Uzziah and the chief menof the town, shouting in the presence of the assembled elders,
24 «Juzgue Dios entre nosotros y vosotros, pues habéis cometido una gran injusticia contra nosotros, por no haber hecho tentativas de paz con los asirios.	24 'May God be judge between you and us! For you have done us great harm, by not suing for peace withthe Assyrians.
25 Y ahora no hay nadie que pueda valernos. Dios nos ha vendido en sus manos, para sucumbir ante ellos de sed y destrucción total.	25 And now there is no one to help us. God has delivered us into their hands to be prostrated before themin thirst and utter helplessness.
26 Llamadles ahora mismo y entregad toda la ciudad al saqueo de la gente de Holofernes y de todo su ejército.	26 Cal them in at once; hand the whole town over to be sacked by Holofernes' men and al his army.
27 Mejor nos es convertirnos en botín suyo. Seremos sus esclavos, pero salvaremos la vida y no tendremos que ver cómo, a nuestros ojos, se mueren nuestros niños y expiran nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos.	27 After al , we should be much better off as their booty than we are now; no doubt we shall be enslaved,but at least we shal be alive and not see our little ones dying before our eyes or our wives and childrenperishing.
28 Os conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y por nuestro Dios, Señor de nuestros padres, que nos ha castigado por nuestros pecados, y por los pecados de nuestros padres, que cumpláis ahora mismo nuestros deseos».	28 By heaven and earth and by our God, the Lord of our fathers, who is punishing us for our sins and thesins of our ancestors, we implore you to take this course now, today.'
29 Y toda la asamblea, a una, prorrumpió en gran llanto y clamaron, a grandes voces, al Señor Dios.	29 Bitter lamentations rose from the whole assembly, and they all cried loudly to the Lord God.
30 Ozías les dijo: «Tened confianza, hermanos; resistamos aún cinco días, y en este tiempo el Señor Dios nuestro volverá su compasión hacia nosotros, porque no nos ha de abandonar por siempre.	30 Then Uzziah spoke to them, 'Take heart, brothers! Let us hold out five days more. By then the Lord ourGod will take pity on us, for he wil not desert us altogether.
31 Pero si pasan estos días sin recibir ayuda cumpliré vuestros deseos».	31 At the end of this time, if no help is forthcoming, I shall do as you have said.'
32 Y despidió a la gente, cada cual a su puesto. Los hombres fueron a las murallas y torres de la ciudad, y a las mujeres y niños los enviaron a casa. Había en la ciudad un gran abatimiento.	32 With that he dismissed the people to their various quarters. The men went to man the wal s and towersof the town, sending the women and children home. The town was ful of despondency.
