BIBLIA	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Al día siguiente ordenó Holofernes a todo su ejército y a todos los pueblos que iban como tropas auxiliares mover el campo contra Betulia, ocupar los accesos de la montaña y comenzar las hostilidades contra los israelitas.	1 But Holofernes on the next day gave orders to his army, to go up against Bethulia.
2 El mismo día levantaron el campo todos los hombres de su ejército; el número de sus guerreros era de 120.000 infantes y 12.000 jinetes, sin contar los encargados del bagaje y la gran cantidad de hombres que iban a pie con ellos.	2 Now there were in his troops a hundred and twenty thousand footmen, and two and twenty thousand horsemen, besides the preparations of those men who had been taken, and who had been brought away out of the provinces and cities of all the youth.
3 Acamparon en el valle que hay cerca de Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron en profundidad desde Dotán hasta Belbáin, y en longitud desde Betulia hasta Kiamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.	3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the children of Israel, and they came by the hillside to the top, which looketh toward Dothain, from the place which is called Behlma, unto Chelmon, which is over against Esdrelon.
4 Cuando los israelitas vieron su muchedumbre, quedaron sobrecogidos y se dijeron unos a otros: «Estos ahora van a arrasar toda la tierra y ni los montes más altos ni los barrancos ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».	4 But the children of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, putting ashes upon their heads, praying with one accord, that the God of Israel would shew his mercy upon his people.
5 Tomó cada cual su equipo de guerra, encendieron hogueras en las torres y permanecieron sobre las armas toda aquella noche.	5 And taking their arms of war, they posted themselves at the places, which by a narrow pathway lead directly between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.
6 Al segundo día, Holofernes hizo desfilar toda su caballería ante los israelitas que había en Betulia.	6 Now Holofernes, in going round about, found that the fountains which supplied them with water, ran through an aqueduct without the city on the south side: and he commanded their aqueduct to he cut off.
7 Inspeccionó todas las subidas de la ciudad, reconoció las fuentes y las ocupó, dejando en ellas guarniciones de soldados; y él se volvió donde su ejército.	7 Nevertheless there were springs not far from the walls, out of which they were seen secretly to draw water, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.
8 Se acercaron entonces a él los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes de los moabitas y los generales del litoral, y le dijeron:	8 But the children of Ammon and Moab came to Holofernes, saying: The children of Israel trust not in their spears, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hires and precipices guard them.
9 «Que nuestro señor escuche una palabra y no habrá ni un solo herido en tu ejército.	9 Wherefore that thou mayst overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs that they may not draw water out of them, and thou shalt destroy them without sword, or at least being wearied out they will yield up their city, which they suppose, because it is situate in the mountains, to be impregnable.
10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía tanto en sus lanzas como en las alturas de los montes en que habitan. De hecho no es fácil escalar la cumbre de estos montes.	10 And these words pleased Holofernes, and his officers, and he placed all round about a hundred men at every spring.
11 «Por eso, señor, no pelees contra ellos en el orden de batalla acostumbrado, para que no caiga ni un solo hombre de los tuyos.	11 And when they had kept this watch for full twenty days, the cisterns, and the reserve of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was not within the city, enough to satisfy them, no not for one day, for water was daily given out to the people by measure.
12 Quédate en el campamento y conserva todos los hombres de tu ejército. Que tus siervos se apoderen de la fuente que brota en la falda de la montaña,	12 Then all the men and women, young men, and children, gathering themselves together to Ozias, all together with one voice,
13 porque de ella se abastecen todos los habitantes de Betulia. La sed los destruirá y tendrán que entregarte la ciudad. Nosotros y nuestro pueblo ocuparemos las alturas de los montes cercanos y acamparemos en ellas, vigilando para que no salga de la ciudad ni un solo hombre.	13 Said: God be judge between us and thee, for thou hast done evil against us, in that thou wouldst not speak peaceably with the Assyrians, and for this cause God hath sold us into their hands.
14 Ellos, sus mujeres y sus hijos, serán consumidos por el hambre y, aun antes de que la espada les alcance, caerán tendidos por las plazas de su ciudad.	14 And therefore there is no one to help us, while we are cast down before their eyes in thirst, and sad destruction.
15 Entonces les impondrás un duro castigo por haberse rebelado y no haber salido a tu encuentro en son de paz».	15 And now assemble ye all that are in the city, that we may of our own accord yield ourselves all up to the people of Holofernes.
16 Parecieron bien estos consejos a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y ordenó que se ejecutara lo que proponían.	16 For it is better, that being captives we should live and bless the Lord, than that we should die, and be a reproach to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our infants die before our eyes.
17 Se puso en marcha el ejército moabita, reforzado por 5.000 asirios, acamparon en el valle y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de las fuentes de los israelitas.	17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who taketh vengeance upon us according to our sins, conjuring you to deliver now the city into the hand of the army of Holofernes, that our end may be short by the edge of the sword, which is made longer by the drought of thirst.
18 Los edomitas y ammonitas, por su parte, acamparon en el monte, frente a Dotán, y enviaron destacamentos hacia el sur y el este, frente a Egrebel, que está al lado de Jus, sobre el torrente Mojmur. El resto del ejército asirio quedó acampado en la llanura y cubría toda la superficie del suelo. Sus tiendas y bagajes formaban un campamento inmenso, porque eran una enorme muchedumbre.	18 And when they had said these things, there was great weeping and lamentation of all in the assembly, and for many hours with one voice they cried to God, saying:
19 Clamaron los israelitas al Señor su Dios, pues su ánimo empezaba a flaquear, viendo que el enemigo les había cercado y cortado toda retirada.	19 We have sinned with our fathers we have done unjustly, we have commited iniquity:
20 34 días estuvieron cercados por todo el ejército asirio, infantes, carros y jinetes. A todos las habitantes de Betulia se les acabaron las reservas de agua;	20 Have thou mercy on us, because thou art good, or punish our iniquities by chastising us thyself, and deliver not them that trust in thee to a people that knoweth not thee,
21 las cisternas se agotaron; ni un solo día podían beber a satisfacción, porque se les daba el agua racionada.	21 That they may not say among the gentiles: Where is their God?
22 Los niños aparecían abatidos, las mujeres y los adolescentes desfallecían de sed y caían en las plazas y a las salidas de las puertas de la ciudad, faltos de fuerzas.	22 And when being wearied with these cries, and tired with these weepings, they held their peace,
23 Todo el pueblo, los adolescentes, las mujeres y los niños, se reunieron en torno a Ozías y a los jefes de la ciudad y clamaron a grandes voces, diciendo delante de los ancianos:	23 Ozias rising up all in tears, said: Be of good courage, my brethren, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.
24 «Juzgue Dios entre nosotros y vosotros, pues habéis cometido una gran injusticia contra nosotros, por no haber hecho tentativas de paz con los asirios.	24 For perhaps he will put a stop to his indignation, and will give glory to his own name.
25 Y ahora no hay nadie que pueda valernos. Dios nos ha vendido en sus manos, para sucumbir ante ellos de sed y destrucción total.	25 But if after five days be past there come no aid, we will do the things which you leave spoken.
26 Llamadles ahora mismo y entregad toda la ciudad al saqueo de la gente de Holofernes y de todo su ejército.
27 Mejor nos es convertirnos en botín suyo. Seremos sus esclavos, pero salvaremos la vida y no tendremos que ver cómo, a nuestros ojos, se mueren nuestros niños y expiran nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos.
28 Os conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y por nuestro Dios, Señor de nuestros padres, que nos ha castigado por nuestros pecados, y por los pecados de nuestros padres, que cumpláis ahora mismo nuestros deseos».
29 Y toda la asamblea, a una, prorrumpió en gran llanto y clamaron, a grandes voces, al Señor Dios.
30 Ozías les dijo: «Tened confianza, hermanos; resistamos aún cinco días, y en este tiempo el Señor Dios nuestro volverá su compasión hacia nosotros, porque no nos ha de abandonar por siempre.
31 Pero si pasan estos días sin recibir ayuda cumpliré vuestros deseos».
32 Y despidió a la gente, cada cual a su puesto. Los hombres fueron a las murallas y torres de la ciudad, y a las mujeres y niños los enviaron a casa. Había en la ciudad un gran abatimiento.
