1 In principio era il Verbo e il Verbo era presso Dio, e il Verbo era Dio.	1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2 Questo era in principio presso Dio.	2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Tutte le cose sono state fatte per mezzo di lui, e senza di lui nessuna delle cose create è stata fatta.	3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
4 In lui era la vita, e la vita era la luce degli uomini.	4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
5 E la luce splendè fra le tenebre, ma le tenebre non la compresero.	5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
6 Ci fu un uomo mandato da Dio, il suo nome era Giovanni.	6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
7 Egli venne come testimone, per attestare della luce, affinchè tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.	7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
8 Non era lui la luce, ma venne per rendere testimonianza alla luce.	8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
9 Era la vera luce che illumina ogni uomo che viene in questo mondo.	9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
10 Era nel mondo e il mondo fu creato per mezzo di lui, ma il mondo non lo conobbe.	10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
11 Venne in casa sua ed i suoi non lo ricevettero.	11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
12 Ma a quanti lo accolsero diede il diritto di diventare figli di Dio;	12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name
13 i quali non da sangue, nè da volere di carne, nè da volere di uomini, ma da Dio sono nati.	13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
14 E il Verbo si è fatto carne ed abitò fra noi, e noi abbiamo contemplata la sua gloria: gloria come d'Unigenito del Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.	14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.
15 Or Giovanni, rendendo testimonianza di lui, grida altamente: Questi era colui del quale vi dissi: chi verrà dopo di me, fu fatto avanti di me, perchè era prima di me.	15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
16 E dalla pienezza di lui noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto grazia sopra grazia.	16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
17 Infatti da Mosè fu data la legge; da Gesù Cristo è venuta la grazia e la verità.	17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
18 Nessuno ha mai veduto Dio; l'Unigenito Figlio che è nel seno del Padre, Egli stesso ce l'ha rivelato.	18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.
19 E questa è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei di Gerusalemme gli mandarono dei sacerdoti e dei leviti per domandargli: Tu chi sei?	19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'
20 Ed egli confessò e non negò; e confessò: Non so no io il Cristo.	20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
21 Ed essi gli domandarono: Chi sei dunque? Sei Elia? Ed egli: No. Sei tu il profeta? No, rispose.	21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
22 Allora gli dissero: E chi sei? affinchè possiamo render conto a chi ci ha mandati: che dici mai di te stesso?	22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'
23 Rispose: Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto: Raddrizzate la via del Signore, come ha detto il profeta Isaia.	23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'
24 Or quelli che erano stati inviati a lui erano dei Farisei;	24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
25 e l'interrogarono dicendo: Come dunque tu battezzi, se non sei il Cristo, nè Elia, nè il profeta?	25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'
26 Giovanni rispose loro: Io battezzo coll'acqua, ma in mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete.	26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
27 Questi è colui che verrà dopo di me, e che era avanti di me, ed a cui non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari.	27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
28 Questo accadeva in Betania oltre il Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando.	28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
29 Il giorno dopo Giovanni vide Gesù venire a lui. ed esclamò: Ecco l'Agnello di Dio, ecco colui che toglie i peccati del mondo.	29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.
30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: dopo di me viene uno che è avanti di me, perchè era prima di me.	30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."
31 Ed io non lo conoscevo; ma affinchè egli sia conosciuto in Israele, io venni a battezzare con acqua.	31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'
32 E Giovanni rese la sua testimonianza dicendo: Ho veduto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo a guisa di colomba e posarsi su di lui.	32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.
33 Ed io nulla sapevo di lui; ma chi mi inviò a battezzare con acqua mi disse: Colui sul quale vedrai scendere e fermarsi lo Spirito, è colui che battezza con lo Spirito.	33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."
34 Ed io ho veduto, ed ho attestato che egli è il Figlio di Dio.	34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'
35 Il giorno seguente, trovandosi di nuovo Giovanni con due suoi discepoli	35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,
36 e mirando Gesù che passava, disse: Ecco l'Agnello di Dio.	36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'
37 I due discepoli, avendo sentite queste parole, seguirono Gesù.	37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38 E Gesù, rivoltosi a guardare questi che lo seguivano, disse loro: Che cercate? Ed essi risposero a lui: Rabbi, che vuol dire Maestro, dove abiti?	38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'
39 Ed egli a loro: Venite e vedrete. Andarono e videro dove abitava e rimasero con lui quel giorno. Era circa l'ora decima.	39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.
40 Andrea, il fratello di Simon Pietro, era uno dei due che avevano udite le parole di Giovanni ed avevan seguito Gesù. «	40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.
41 Il primo in cui s'imbattè fu suo fratello Simone, a cui disse: Abbiamo trovato il Messia, che tradotto vuol dire il Cristo;	41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-
42 e lo menò da Gesù. E Gesù, fissatolo, disse: Tu sei Simone, figlio di Giona; tu sarai chiamato Cefa, che vuol dire Pietro.	42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.
43 Il giorno seguente Gesù decise di andare in Galilea; e, trovato Filippo, gli disse: Seguimi.	43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'
44 Filippo era di Betsaida, la città di Andrea e di Pietro.	44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
45 E Filippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: Abbiamo trovato colui del quale scrissero Mosè nella legge e i profeti, Gesù di Nazaret, figlio di Giuseppe.	45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'
46 E Natanaele gli rispose: Da Nazaret può mai uscire qualcosa di buono? Filippo gli replicò: Vieni e vedi.	46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'
47 Or Gesù, vedendo venirgli incontro Natanaele, disse a lui: Ecco un vero Israelita in cui non è frode.	47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'
48 E Natanaele gli disse: Come mi conosci? Gesù rispose: Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse io t'ho visto quand'eri sotto il fico.	48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'
49 Natanaele rispose: Maestro, tu sei il Figlio di Dio; tu sei il Re d'Israele!	49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'
50 Gesù replicò: Per averti detto che ti ho veduto sotto il fico tu credi? Vedrai cose maggiori di queste.	50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'
51 Poi soggiunse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che vedrete il cielo aperto e gli Angeli di Dio salire e scendere sopra il Figlio dell'uomo.	51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'
