1 In principio era il Verbo e il Verbo era presso Dio, e il Verbo era Dio.	1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 Questo era in principio presso Dio.	2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 Tutte le cose sono state fatte per mezzo di lui, e senza di lui nessuna delle cose create è stata fatta.	3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be
4 In lui era la vita, e la vita era la luce degli uomini.	4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;
5 E la luce splendè fra le tenebre, ma le tenebre non la compresero.	5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 Ci fu un uomo mandato da Dio, il suo nome era Giovanni.	6 A man named John was sent from God.
7 Egli venne come testimone, per attestare della luce, affinchè tutti credessero per mezzo di lui.	7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.
8 Non era lui la luce, ma venne per rendere testimonianza alla luce.	8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.
9 Era la vera luce che illumina ogni uomo che viene in questo mondo.	9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
10 Era nel mondo e il mondo fu creato per mezzo di lui, ma il mondo non lo conobbe.	10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him.
11 Venne in casa sua ed i suoi non lo ricevettero.	11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.
12 Ma a quanti lo accolsero diede il diritto di diventare figli di Dio;	12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name,
13 i quali non da sangue, nè da volere di carne, nè da volere di uomini, ma da Dio sono nati.	13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God.
14 E il Verbo si è fatto carne ed abitò fra noi, e noi abbiamo contemplata la sua gloria: gloria come d'Unigenito del Padre, pieno di grazia e di verità.	14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth.
15 Or Giovanni, rendendo testimonianza di lui, grida altamente: Questi era colui del quale vi dissi: chi verrà dopo di me, fu fatto avanti di me, perchè era prima di me.	15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'"
16 E dalla pienezza di lui noi tutti abbiamo ricevuto grazia sopra grazia.	16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,
17 Infatti da Mosè fu data la legge; da Gesù Cristo è venuta la grazia e la verità.	17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 Nessuno ha mai veduto Dio; l'Unigenito Figlio che è nel seno del Padre, Egli stesso ce l'ha rivelato.	18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father's side, has revealed him.
19 E questa è la testimonianza di Giovanni, quando i Giudei di Gerusalemme gli mandarono dei sacerdoti e dei leviti per domandargli: Tu chi sei?	19 And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites (to him) to ask him, "Who are you?"
20 Ed egli confessò e non negò; e confessò: Non so no io il Cristo.	20 he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, "I am not the Messiah."
21 Ed essi gli domandarono: Chi sei dunque? Sei Elia? Ed egli: No. Sei tu il profeta? No, rispose.	21 So they asked him, "What are you then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
22 Allora gli dissero: E chi sei? affinchè possiamo render conto a chi ci ha mandati: che dici mai di te stesso?	22 So they said to him, "Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?"
23 Rispose: Io sono la voce di colui che grida nel deserto: Raddrizzate la via del Signore, come ha detto il profeta Isaia.	23 He said: "I am 'the voice of one crying out in the desert, "Make straight the way of the Lord,"' as Isaiah the prophet said."
24 Or quelli che erano stati inviati a lui erano dei Farisei;	24 Some Pharisees were also sent.
25 e l'interrogarono dicendo: Come dunque tu battezzi, se non sei il Cristo, nè Elia, nè il profeta?	25 They asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?"
26 Giovanni rispose loro: Io battezzo coll'acqua, ma in mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete.	26 John answered them, "I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
27 Questi è colui che verrà dopo di me, e che era avanti di me, ed a cui non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari.	27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie."
28 Questo accadeva in Betania oltre il Giordano, dove Giovanni stava battezzando.	28 This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Il giorno dopo Giovanni vide Gesù venire a lui. ed esclamò: Ecco l'Agnello di Dio, ecco colui che toglie i peccati del mondo.	29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
30 Egli è colui del quale ho detto: dopo di me viene uno che è avanti di me, perchè era prima di me.	30 He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'
31 Ed io non lo conoscevo; ma affinchè egli sia conosciuto in Israele, io venni a battezzare con acqua.	31 I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel."
32 E Giovanni rese la sua testimonianza dicendo: Ho veduto lo Spirito scendere dal cielo a guisa di colomba e posarsi su di lui.	32 John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.
33 Ed io nulla sapevo di lui; ma chi mi inviò a battezzare con acqua mi disse: Colui sul quale vedrai scendere e fermarsi lo Spirito, è colui che battezza con lo Spirito.	33 I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.'
34 Ed io ho veduto, ed ho attestato che egli è il Figlio di Dio.	34 Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."
35 Il giorno seguente, trovandosi di nuovo Giovanni con due suoi discepoli	35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples,
36 e mirando Gesù che passava, disse: Ecco l'Agnello di Dio.	36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God."
37 I due discepoli, avendo sentite queste parole, seguirono Gesù.	37 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38 E Gesù, rivoltosi a guardare questi che lo seguivano, disse loro: Che cercate? Ed essi risposero a lui: Rabbi, che vuol dire Maestro, dove abiti?	38 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39 Ed egli a loro: Venite e vedrete. Andarono e videro dove abitava e rimasero con lui quel giorno. Era circa l'ora decima.	39 He said to them,"Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrea, il fratello di Simon Pietro, era uno dei due che avevano udite le parole di Giovanni ed avevan seguito Gesù. «	40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
41 Il primo in cui s'imbattè fu suo fratello Simone, a cui disse: Abbiamo trovato il Messia, che tradotto vuol dire il Cristo;	41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed).
42 e lo menò da Gesù. E Gesù, fissatolo, disse: Tu sei Simone, figlio di Giona; tu sarai chiamato Cefa, che vuol dire Pietro.	42 Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Kephas" (which is translated Peter).
43 Il giorno seguente Gesù decise di andare in Galilea; e, trovato Filippo, gli disse: Seguimi.	43 The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
44 Filippo era di Betsaida, la città di Andrea e di Pietro.	44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
45 E Filippo trovò Natanaele e gli disse: Abbiamo trovato colui del quale scrissero Mosè nella legge e i profeti, Gesù di Nazaret, figlio di Giuseppe.	45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
46 E Natanaele gli rispose: Da Nazaret può mai uscire qualcosa di buono? Filippo gli replicò: Vieni e vedi.	46 But Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
47 Or Gesù, vedendo venirgli incontro Natanaele, disse a lui: Ecco un vero Israelita in cui non è frode.	47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him."
48 E Natanaele gli disse: Come mi conosci? Gesù rispose: Prima che Filippo ti chiamasse io t'ho visto quand'eri sotto il fico.	48 Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
49 Natanaele rispose: Maestro, tu sei il Figlio di Dio; tu sei il Re d'Israele!	49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
50 Gesù replicò: Per averti detto che ti ho veduto sotto il fico tu credi? Vedrai cose maggiori di queste.	50 Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this."
51 Poi soggiunse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che vedrete il cielo aperto e gli Angeli di Dio salire e scendere sopra il Figlio dell'uomo.	51 And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
