Siracide 11

1 La sapienza dell'umile lo innalzerà e lo farà sedere tra i grandi.	1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.
2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua bellezza, e non disprezzare una persona per il suo aspetto.	2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.
3 Piccola cosa tra i volatili è l'ape, eppure il suo frutto ha il primato della dolcezza.	3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.
4 Non ti gloriar mai del tuo vestito, non t'insuperbire quando sarai onorato; perchè soltanto le opere dell'Altissimo son maravigliose, le opere di lui son gloriose, nascoste, invisibili.	4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.
5 Sederono sul trono molti tiranni, e portò il diadema colui al quale nessuno pensava.	5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.
6 Molti potenti sono stati profondamente umiliati, e chi era nella gloria fu dato in altrui potere.	6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.
7 Non biasimare avanti d'esserti informato, quando ti sarai informato riprenderai con giustizia.	7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.
8 Non rispondere prima d'aver ascoltato, e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.	8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.
9 Non contendere per cosa che non ti molesta, e non ti mettere a giudicar coi peccatori.	9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.
10 Figlio, non t'impicciare in molte cose: se diverrai ricco, non sarai immune da colpa; se andrai dietro (a molte) non ne porterai in fondo (una), ed anche fuggendo, non ti trarrai d'impaccio.	10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.
11 C'è chi fatica, s'affretta e patisce, e, essendo empio, tanto meno arricchisce.	11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.
12 C'è invece un disgraziato bisognoso d'aiuto, privo d'ogni forza e ricco di miseria;	12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.
13 ma l'occhio di Dio lo guarda benignamente, lo solleva dalla sua umile condizione, gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati e glorificano Dio.	13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.
14 I beni e i mali, la vita e la morte, la povertà e la ricchezza vengono da Dio.	14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.
15 La sapienza, la disciplina e la scienza della legge son da Dio, son da lui l'amore e le vie del bene.	15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.
16 L'errore e le tenebre sono ingenite nei peccatori, e chi esulta nel male invecchia nella malizia.	16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.
17 Il dono di Dio rimane ai giusti, e il suo progresso avrà dei successi in eterno.	17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.
18 C'è chi arricchisce a forza di risparmi, ed ecco la parte che gli tocca in ricompensa:	18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.
19 che può dire: « Ho trovato riposo, ed ora mi godrò da solo i miei beni »	19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”
20 e non sa quanto tempo debba passare avanti che s'avvicini la morte, quando morrà lasciando tutto agli altri.	20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.
21 Stai al tuo patto, di esso ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempimento di quanto t'è comandato.	21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.
22 Non rimanere stupito dell'agire dei peccatori, ma confida in Dio e rimani al tuo posto;	22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.
23 perché è facile davanti a Dio arricchire in un momento il povero.	23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.
24 La benedizione di Dio s'affretta a ricompensare il giusto, e in breve ora fa fruttificare i suoi progressi.	24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.
25 Non dire: « Di che ho bisogno? E quali beni potrò avere da qui in avanti? »	25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”
26 Non dire: « Io basto a me stesso; e qual disgrazia ormai mi potrà, accadere? »	26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”
27 Nel giorno della felicità non ti dimenticare della sventura, e nel giorno della sventura non ti dimenticare della felicità.	27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.
28 E' cosa facile a Dio, nel giorno della morte, rendere a ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.	28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.
29 Il male d'un'ora fa dimenticare i grandi piaceri, e alla fine dell'uomo le sue opere saranno svelate.	29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.
30 Non lodar nessuno avanti la sua morte, perchè l'uomo si conosce dai suoi figlioli.	30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.
31 Non menare in casa tua ogni sorta di persone, perchè son molte le insidie dell'ingannatore.	31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.
32 Come lo stomaco guasto rutta fetidi odori, come la pernice è attirata nella gabbia e il daino nel laccio, così fa il cuore del superbo, e come chi spia per vedere la caduta del prossimo.	32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.
33 Infatti, convertendo il bene in male, tende insidie, e alle doti migliori apporrà delle macchie.	33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.
34 Da una sola scintilla divamperà l'incendio, da un solo ingannatore saran moltiplicate le stragi; e l'uomo perverso attenta alla vita.	34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.
35 Guardati dal corruttore, che ordisce guai, affinchè non abbia a tirarti addosso eterno scherno.	35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.
36 Metti in casa uno straniero, ed egli ti metterà sottosopra e in tempesta, e ti alienerà dai tuoi.	36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.
