1 Al mattino i capi dei sacerdoti con gli anziani, gli scribi e tutto il sinedrio tennero consiglio e, fatto legare Gesù, lo condussero e lo consegnarono a Pilato.	1 And immediately in the morning, after the leaders of the priests had taken counsel with the elders and the scribes and the entire council, binding Jesus, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate.
2 Pilato lo interrogò: "Sei tu il re dei Giudei?". Gli rispose: "Tu lo dici".	2 And Pilate questioned him, “You are the king of the Jews?” But in response, he said to him, “You are saying it.”
3 I capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose.	3 And the leaders of the priests accused him in many things.
4 Perciò Pilato lo interrogò di nuovo: "Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano!".	4 Then Pilate again questioned him, saying: “Do you not have any response? See how greatly they accuse you.”
5 Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla, sicché Pilato ne restò meravigliato.	5 But Jesus continued to give no response, so that Pilate wondered.
6 Questi soleva, in ogni festività, rilasciare un prigioniero: quello che gli avessero chiesto.	6 Now on the feast day, he was accustomed to release to them one of the prisoners, whomever they requested.
7 Intanto ve n'era uno chiamato Barabba, il quale era stato imprigionato insieme ai sediziosi che, durante una sommossa, avevano commesso un omicidio.	7 But there was one called Barabbas, who had committed murder in the sedition, who was confined with those of the sedition.
8 Salì, perciò, la folla e incominciò a reclamare ciò che le si soleva concedere.	8 And when the crowd had ascended, they began to petition him to do as he always did for them.
9 Pilato, allora, rispose loro: "Volete che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?".	9 But Pilate answered them and said, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”
10 Egli, infatti, sapeva che per invidia i capi dei sacerdoti glielo avevano consegnato.	10 For he knew that it was out of envy that the leaders of the priests had betrayed him.
11 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti aizzarono la folla, affinché rilasciasse loro piuttosto Barabba.	11 Then the chief priests incited the crowd, so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.
12 Pilato, allora, prendendo di nuovo la parola, domandò loro: "Che cosa, dunque, volete che faccia di colui che voi chiamate il re dei Giudei?".	12 But Pilate, responding again, said to them: “Then what do you want me to do with the king of the Jews?”
13 Quelli gridarono di nuovo: "Crocifiggilo!".	13 But again they cried out, “Crucify him.”
14 Ma Pilato disse loro: "Che male ha fatto?". Quelli, allora gridarono più forte: "Crocifiggilo!".	14 Yet truly, Pilate said to them: “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him.”
15 Pilato, perciò, volendo dare soddisfazione alla folla, rilasciò loro Barabba e consegnò Gesù perché, dopo averlo flagellato, fosse crocifisso.	15 Then Pilate, wishing to satisfy the people, released Barabbas to them, and he delivered Jesus, having severely scourged him, to be crucified.
16 Allora i soldati lo condussero dentro il cortile, cioè nel pretorio e, convocata l'intera coorte,	16 Then the soldiers led him away to the court of the praetorium. And they called together the entire cohort.
17 lo rivestirono di porpora e gli cinsero il capo intrecciandogli una corona di spine.	17 And they clothed him with purple. And platting a crown of thorns, they placed it on him.
18 Quindi incominciarono a salutarlo: "Salve, re dei Giudei!",	18 And they began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews.”
19 mentre con una canna gli battevano il capo, gli sputavano addosso e, piegando le ginocchia, gli facevano riverenza.	19 And they struck his head with a reed, and they spit on him. And kneeling down, they reverenced him.
20 Dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora e lo rivestirono delle sue vesti. Mentre lo conducevano fuori per crocifiggerlo,	20 And after they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple, and they clothed him in his own garments. And they led him away, so that they might crucify him.
21 costrinsero un passante che tornava dai campi, Simone di Cirene, padre di Alessandro e Rufo, a portare la croce di lui.	21 And they compelled a certain passerby, Simon the Cyrenian, who was arriving from the countryside, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to take up his cross.
22 Lo condussero, così, al luogo detto Gòlgota, che significa luogo del Cranio.	22 And they led him through to the place called Golgotha, which means, ‘the Place of Calvary.’
23 Volevano anche dargli del vino aromatizzato con mirra, ma egli non lo prese.	23 And they gave him wine with myrrh to drink. But he did not accept it.
24 Perciò lo crocifissero e si divisero le sue vesti, gettando sopra di esse la sorte per quel che ciascuno dovesse prendersi.	24 And while crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots over them, to see who would take what.
25 Era l'ora terza quando lo crocifissero,	25 Now it was the third hour. And they crucified him.
26 e l'iscrizione con la causa della condanna recava scritto: "Il re dei Giudei".	26 And the title of his case was written as: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27 Insieme a lui crocifissero pure due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e l'altro alla sua sinistra (	27 And with him they crucified two robbers: one at his right, and the other at his left.
28 e si adempì la Scrittura che dice: "Fu computato con gli iniqui").	28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which says: “And with the iniquitous he was reputed.”
29 Quelli che passavano lo insultavano, scuotendo il capo e dicendo: "Eh! tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo riedifichi,	29 And the passersby blasphemed him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ah, you who would destroy the temple of God, and in three days rebuild it,
30 salva te stesso, scendendo dalla croce".	30 save yourself by descending from the cross.”
31 Similmente anche i capi dei sacerdoti con gli scribi si facevano beffe di lui dicendo tra loro: "Ha salvato gli altri, non può salvare se stesso.	31 And similarly the leaders of the priests, mocking him with the scribes, said to one another: “He saved others. He is not able to save himself.
32 Il Cristo, il re d'Israele, scenda ora dalla croce, affinché vediamo e crediamo". Perfino quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui lo insultavano.	32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, descend now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.
33 Giunta l'ora sesta, si fece buio su tutta la terra fino all'ora nona.	33 And when the sixth hour arrived, a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.
34 All'ora nona, Gesù esclamò a gran voce: "Eloì, Eloì, lamà sabactanì", che si traduce: "Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?".	34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”
35 Allora alcuni dei presenti, uditolo, dicevano: "Ecco, invoca Elia".	35 And some of those standing near, upon hearing this, said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”
36 Un tale corse ad inzuppare una spugna di aceto, la pose su una canna e gli dava da bere, dicendo: "Lasciate, vediamo se viene Elia a tirarlo giù".	36 Then one of them, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and placing it around a reed, gave it to him to drink, saying: “Wait. Let us see if Elijah will come to take him down.”
37 Ma Gesù, emesso un grande grido, spirò.	37 Then Jesus, having emitted a loud cry, expired.
38 Allora il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, dall'alto fino al basso.	38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom.
39 E il centurione che gli stava di fronte, vistolo spirare gridando a quel modo, esclamò: "Davvero quest'uomo era Figlio di Dio!".	39 Then the centurion who stood opposite him, seeing that he had expired while crying out in this way, said: “Truly, this man was the Son of God.”
40 Vi erano pure alcune donne che stavano osservando da lontano. Tra esse: Maria Maddalena, Maria madre di Giacomo il Minore e di Giuseppe, e Salome,	40 Now there were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome,
41 le quali lo avevano seguito e servito quando era in Galilea, e molte altre che erano salite con lui a Gerusalemme.	41 (and while he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him) and many other women, who had ascended along with him to Jerusalem.
42 Fattasi ormai sera, poiché era la Parasceve, vale a dire il giorno prima del sabato,	42 And when evening had now arrived (because it was the Preparation Day, which is before the Sabbath)
43 Giuseppe d'Arimatea, distinto membro del consiglio, il quale aspettava anch'egli il regno di Dio, venne, si fece coraggio, entrò da Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù.	43 there arrived Joseph of Arimathea, a noble council member, who himself was also awaiting the kingdom of God. And he boldly entered to Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.
44 Pilato si meravigliò che fosse già morto. Perciò, chiamato il centurione, gli domandò se fosse morto da tempo.	44 But Pilate wondered if he had already died. And summoning a centurion, he questioned him as to whether he was already dead.
45 Informato dal centurione, concesse il cadavere a Giuseppe,	45 And when he had been informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
46 il quale, comprato un panno di lino, fece deporre Gesù, lo avvolse col panno di lino e lo pose in un sepolcro che era stato tagliato nella roccia. Quindi sulla porta del sepolcro fece rotolare una pietra,	46 Then Joseph, having bought a fine linen cloth, and taking him down, wrapped him in the fine linen and laid him in a sepulcher, which was hewn from a rock. And he rolled a stone to the entrance of the tomb.
