1 So put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander.	1 Rigettate dunque ogni genere di cattiveria, inganno, ipocrisia, invidia e maldicenza.
2 Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation;	2 Simili a bimbi appena nati, siate avidi di un latte spirituale e puro per crescere, per esso, fino alla salvezza,
3 for you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.	3 se davvero avete gustato quant'è soave il Signore!
4 Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious;	4 Avvicinandovi a lui, pietra vivente rigettata dagli uomini, ma scelta e pregiata da Dio,
5 and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.	5 pure voi, simili a pietre viventi, siate edificati come edificio spirituale per un sacerdozio santo, allo scopo di offrire vittime spirituali bene accette a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.
6 For it stands in scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame."	6 Perciò c’è nella Scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra angolare, scelta, pregiata; e chi pone su essa la sua fede non resterà deluso.
7 To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner,"	7 A voi dunque l’onore, a voi che credete. Ma per quelli che non hanno fede, la pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato, questa è diventata pietra d’angolo,
8 and "A stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall"; for they stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.	8 e pietra d’inciampo e roccia di scandalo : essi vi inciampano non dando retta alla parola, per la quale pure eran stati posti.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.	9 Voi invece siete la stirpe eletta, il sacerdozio regale, la nazione santa, popolo di acquisto, per annunciare le virtù di colui che dalle tenebre vi chiamò alla meravigliosa sua luce;
10 Once you were no people but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.	10 voi che un tempo eravate non-popolo, ora invece siete il popolo di Dio; voi i già esclusi dalla misericordia, siete ora invece figli di misericordia.
11 Beloved, I beseech you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul.	11 Carissimi, vi supplico, quali stranieri e pellegrini su questa terra, di astenervi dalle cupidigie carnali che fanno guerra all’anima.
12 Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in case they speak against you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.	12 Comportatevi bene in mezzo ai pagani, affinché, se ora sparlano di voi come di malfattori, glorifichino poi il Signore, rendendosi conto delle opere buone, nel giorno della sua visita.
13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,	13 Siate sottomessi a ogni istituzione umana per amore del Signore: sia al re in quanto sovrano,
14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.	14 sia ai suoi ministri in quanto inviati per punire chi fa male e approvare chi fa bene
15 For it is God's will that by doing right you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.	15 È volontà di Dio che, operando il bene, riduciate al silenzio l’ignoranza degli uomini insensati;
16 Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God.	16 da veri uomini liberi, che non si servono della libertà come velo della malizia, ma sono servitori di Dio.
17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.	17 Onorate tutti, amate i fratelli, temete Iddio, onorate il re.
18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to the kind and gentle but also to the overbearing.	18 Domestici, siate sottomessi con ogni rispetto ai padroni, non soltanto a quelli buoni e ragionevoli ma anche a quelli duri.
19 For one is approved if, mindful of God, he endures pain while suffering unjustly.	19 Questo infatti è gradito: sopportare pene in omaggio a Dio, soffrendo ingiustamente.
20 For what credit is it, if when you do wrong and are beaten for it you take it patiently? But if when you do right and suffer for it you take it patiently, you have God's approval.	20 Che gloria c’è infatti se sopportate qualcosa per qualche colpa e per questo siete stati schiaffeggiati? Ma se sopportate di subir del male pur avendo fatto bene, questo è gradito davanti a Dio.
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.	21 Ora appunto questa è la vostra divisa, poiché anche Cristo soffrì per voi, lasciandovi un esempio, affinché ne seguiate le tracce.
22 He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips.	22 Lui che peccato non fece e nella cui bocca non fu trovato inganno;
23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly.	23 lui che oltraggiato non restituiva l’oltraggio, maltrattato non minacciava, ma si rimetteva a colui che giudica con giustizia;
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.	24 lui che personalmente portò nel suo corpo i nostri peccati sulla croce, affinché, morti ai peccati, noi vivessimo per la giustizia; lui, per le cui lividure voi foste guariti;
25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.	25 Eravate infatti come pecore erranti, ma ora siete tornati al pastore e guardiano delle anime vostre.
