1 Then it was decided to send him by ship to Italy, and that Paul, with the others in custody, should be delivered to a centurion named Julius, of the cohort of Augusta.	1 Appena fu deciso che avremmo fatto vela per l’Italia, si affidò Paolo e alcuni altri carcerati a un centurione chiamato Giulio, della coorte Augusta.
2 After climbing aboard a ship from Adramyttium, we set sail and began to navigate along the ports of Asia, with Aristarchus, the Macedonian from Thessalonica, joining us.	2 Montati quindi su una nave di Adramittio, che doveva far vela per le città costiere dell’Asia Minore, salpammo in compagnia del macedone Aristarco di Tessalonica
3 And on the following day, we arrived at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul humanely, permitted him to go to his friends and to look after himself.	3 e il giorno seguente approdammo a Sidone. Giulio, con un tratto di umanità verso Paolo, gli permise di andar dagli amici e di riceverne le attenzioni.
4 And when we had set sail from there, we navigated below Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.	4 Salpii da lì, navigammo al riparo di Cipro, essendo contrari i venti.
5 And navigating though the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we arrived at Lystra, which is in Lycia.	5 Traversato poi il mare aperto di Cilicia e di Panfilia, arrivammo a Mira di Licia.
6 And there the centurion found a ship from Alexandria sailing to Italy, and he transferred us to it.	6 Là il centurione trovò una nave alessandrina che faceva vela per l’Italia e ci fece trasbordare.
7 And when we had sailed slowly for many days and had barely arrived opposite Cnidus, for the wind was hindering us, we sailed to Crete, near Salmone.	7 Ma, in capo a parecchi giorni di lenta navigazione che con difficoltà ci lasciò arrivare al largo di Cnido, non permettendolo il vento, navigammo al riparo di Creta al largo di Salmone,
8 And barely being able to sail past it, we arrived at a certain place, which is called Good Shelter, next to which was the city of Lasea.	8 finché, costeggiandola con difficoltà, arrivammo a un luogo chiamato Buoni Porti, nelle vicinanze della città di Lasea.
9 Then, after much time had passed, and since sailing would no longer be prudent because the Fast Day had now passed, Paul consoled them,	9 Trascorso ancora parecchio tempo ed essendo ormai pericolosa la navigazione, anche perché era già passata l’Espiazione, Paolo mise in guardia l’equipaggio:
10 and he said to them: “Men, I perceive that the voyage is now in danger of injury and much damage, not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our own lives.”	10 «Amici, vedo che il proseguir la navigazione può arrecar pregiudizio, anzi rovina, non solo al carico e alla nave ma anche alle nostre vite».
11 But the centurion put more trust in the captain and the navigator of the ship, than in the things being said by Paul.	11 Ma il centurione diede ascolto al timoniere e all’armatore e non alle parole di Paolo.
12 And since it was not a fitting port in which to winter, the majority opinion was to sail from there, so that somehow they might be able to arrive at Phoenicia, in order to winter there, at a port of Crete, which looks out toward the southwest and northwest.	12 Ed essendo il porto inadatto a uno svernamento, la maggioranza decise di spiegar le vele, allo scopo di arrivare possibilmente e di svernare a Fenice, porto cretese rivolto a libeccio.
13 And since the south wind was blowing gently, they thought that they might reach their goal. And after they had set out from Asson, they weighed anchor at Crete.	13 Essendosi però levato un leggero vento del sud e credendo essi di poter sicuramente attuare il loro disegno, tolsero l’àncora e costeggiarono più da vicino Creta.
14 But not long afterward, a violent wind came against them, which is called the Northeast Wind.	14 Non passò molto che contro la nave si scatenò un vento tifonico, quello chiamato euroaquilone.
15 And once the ship had been caught in it and was not able to strive against the wind, giving over the ship to the winds, we were driven along.	15 La nave ne da investita al punto da non poter tenere la linea del vento, per cui ci lasciammo andare alla deriva.
16 Then, being forced along a certain island, which is called the Tail, we were barely able to hold on to the ship’s lifeboat.	16 Giunti al riparo di un’isoletta chiamata Gavdos, potemmo a stento impadronirci della scialuppa di salvataggio.
17 When this was taken up, they used it to assist in securing the ship. For they were afraid that they might run aground. And having lowered the sails, they were being driven along in this way.	17 Issatala a bordo, ricorsero a un’altra difesa: cinsero la nave; infine, per paura di essere sbattuti sulla Gran Sirte, calarono lo zatterone. Intanto la deriva continuava.
18 Then, since we were being tossed about strongly by the tempest, on the following day, they threw the heavy items overboard.	18 Ma poiché eravamo troppo sballottati dalla tempesta, essi, il giorno dopo, buttarono fuori bordo parte del carico,
19 And on the third day, with their own hands, they threw the equipment of the ship overboard.	19 e il terzo giorno gettarono via con le loro mani l’attrezzatura della nave.
20 Then, when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no end to the storm was imminent, all hope for our safety was now taken away.	20 E poiché da diversi giorni non si vedevano né sole né stelle e c’incombeva una furiosa tempesta, ormai svanì ogni speranza di salvezza.
21 And after they had fasted for a long time, Paul, standing in their midst, said: “Certainly, men, you should have listened to me and not set out from Crete, so as to cause this injury and loss.	21 A questo punto, visto che da molto si era digiuni, Paolo andò in mezzo a loro e disse: «È vero che sarebbe stato vostro dovere, amici, ascoltarmi e non salpare da Creta e così risparmiarvi questo pericolo e questo danno;
22 And now, let me persuade you to be courageous in soul. For there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.	22 ma in questo momento io vi esorto a farvi coraggio, perché tra voi non ci sarà perdita alcuna di vite umane, bensì unicamente della nave.
23 For an Angel of God, who is assigned to me and whom I serve, stood beside me this night,	23 Questo perché stanotte mi è apparso un angelo del Dio a cui appartengo e al quale servo
24 saying: ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! It is necessary for you to stand before Caesar. And behold, God has given to you all those who are sailing with you.’	24 a dirmi: “Non temere, o Paolo: bisogna che tu compaia davanti a Cesare, e per questo motivo Iddio ti ha fatto dono di tutti i compagni di navigazione”.
25 Because of this, men, be courageous in soul. For I trust God that this will happen in the same way that it has been told to me.	25 Per tutto questo fatevi coraggio, amici: io ho fede in Dio che tutto avverrà come’ mi è stato detto.
26 But it is necessary for us to arrive at a certain island.”	26 Ma è inevitabile che finiamo su una qualche isola».
27 Then, after the fourteenth night arrived, as we were navigating in the sea of Adria, about the middle of the night, the sailors believed that they saw some portion of the land.	27 Quando giunse la quattordicesima notte della nostra deriva per l’Adriatico centrale, verso la mezzanotte l’equipaggio sentì che una qualche terra si stava avvicinando.
28 And upon dropping a weight, they found a depth of twenty paces. And some distance from there, they found a depth of fifteen paces.	28 Mandarono giù lo scandaglio e trovarono venti tese; poi, avanzato un altro poco, rimandarono giù lo scandaglio e trovarono quindici tese.
29 Then, fearing that we might happen upon rough places, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and they were hoping for daylight to arrive soon.	29 Nel timore che da qualche parte si. andasse a finire sugli scogli, gettarono da poppa quattro àncore e si diedero ad aspettare bramosamente l’alba.
30 Yet truly, the sailors were seeking a way to flee from the ship, for they had lowered a lifeboat into the sea, on the pretext that they were attempting to cast anchors from the bow of the ship.	30 Quando però i marinai cercarono di allontanarsi dalla nave e calarono in mare la scialuppa col pretesto di mollare àncore da prua,
31 So Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you will not be able to be saved.”	31 Paolo disse al centurione e alla truppa: «Se costoro non rimangono sulla nave, voi non potete salvarvi».
32 Then the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat, and they allowed it to fall.	32 Allora i soldati tagliarono i cavi della scialuppa e la lasciarono cadere in mare.
33 And when it began to be light, Paul requested that they all take food, saying: “This is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting and continuing to fast, taking nothing.	33 Poco prima che spuntasse il giorno, Paolo andava incoraggiando tutti a prender cibo, dicendo: «Oggi è il quattordicesimo giorno che nell’attesa continuate il digiuno, senz’aver preso nulla.
34 For this reason, I beg you to accept food for the sake of your health. For not a hair from the head of any of you shall perish.”	34 Perciò vi prego di prender cibo: anche questo contribuisce alla vostra salvezza, visto che non si perderà nemmeno un capello della vostra testa».
35 And when he had said these things, taking bread, he gave thanks to God in the sight of them all. And when he had broken it, he began to eat.	35 Dette queste parole, prese del pane, rese grazie a Dio alla presenza di tutti, lo spezzò e per primo ne mangiò.
36 Then they all became more peaceful in soul. And they also took food.	36 Allora tutti si fecero coraggio e presero cibo anch’essi.
37 Truly, we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship.	37 Le persone a bordo erano in tutto duecentosettantasei.
38 And having been nourished with food, they lightened the ship, casting the wheat into the sea.	38 Quando si furono soddisfatti di cibo, alleggerirono la nave buttando in mare il grano.
39 And when day had arrived, they did not recognize the landscape. Yet truly, they caught sight of a certain narrow inlet having a shore, into which they thought it might be possible to force the ship.	39 Fattosi giorno, non riconobbero quella terra; soltanto scorgevano un’insenatura con un lido, in cui avrebbero voluto far incagliare possibilmente la nave.
40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, at the same time loosing the restraints of the rudders. And so, raising the mainsail to the gusting wind, they pressed on toward the shore.	40 Perciò alzarono le àncore e le lasciarono ricadere in mare, mollando nello stesso tempo i tiranti dei timoni e, spiegata la vela randa di mezzana al vento, si diressero verso il lido.
41 And when we happened upon a place open to two seas, they ran the ship aground. And indeed, the bow, being immobilized, remained fixed, but truly the stern was broken by the violence of the sea.	41 Andati a finire su una specie di istmo, mandarono la nave in secco. La prua restò immobile perché si era incagliata, mentre la poppa cominciò a sfasciarsi per la violenza dei marosi.
42 Then the soldiers were in agreement that they should kill the prisoners, lest anyone, after escaping by swimming, might flee.	42 I soldati concepirono il disegno di uccidere i prigionieri perché non cercassero di evadere a nuoto.
43 But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, prohibited it from being done. And he ordered those who were able to swim to jump in first, and to escape, and to get to the land.	43 Ma il centurione, che voleva salvar Paolo, impedì loro di attuare quel disegno. Diede anzi ordine che quelli che erano in grado di nuotare si gettassero per primi in acqua e raggiungessero la terra,
44 And as for the others, some they carried on boards, and others on those things that belonged to the ship. And so it happened that every soul escaped to the land.	44 gli altri parte su assi, parte su qualsivoglia pezzo della nave. In questo modo tutti giunsero sani e salvi all’asciutto.
