CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
Then it was decided to send him by ship to Italy, and that Paul, with the others in custody, should be delivered to a centurion named Julius, of the cohort of Augusta.1 Αφου δε απεφασισθη να αποπλευσωμεν εις την Ιταλιαν, παρεδωκαν τον Παυλον και τινας αλλους δεσμιους εις εκατονταρχον Ιουλιον ονομαζομενον, εκ του ταγματος του Σεβαστου λεγομενου.
After climbing aboard a ship from Adramyttium, we set sail and began to navigate along the ports of Asia, with Aristarchus, the Macedonian from Thessalonica, joining us.2 Και αφου επεβημεν εις πλοιον Αδραμυττηνον, εσηκωθημεν μελλοντες να παραπλευσωμεν τους κατα την Ασιαν τοπους, εχοντες μεθ' ημων Αρισταρχον τον Μακεδονα τον εκ Θεσσαλονικης?
And on the following day, we arrived at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul humanely, permitted him to go to his friends and to look after himself.3 και την αλλην ημεραν εφθασαμεν εις Σιδωνα?
And when we had set sail from there, we navigated below Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.4 Και εκειθεν σηκωθεντες υπεπλευσαμεν την Κυπρον, επειδη ησαν εναντιοι οι ανεμοι,
And navigating though the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we arrived at Lystra, which is in Lycia.5 και διαπλευσαντες το πελαγος της Κιλικιας και Παμφυλιας, ηλθομεν εις τα Μυρα της Λυκιας.
And there the centurion found a ship from Alexandria sailing to Italy, and he transferred us to it.6 Και εκει ευρων ο εκατονταρχος πλοιον Αλεξανδρινον, το οποιον επλεεν εις την Ιταλιαν, επεβιβασεν ημας εις αυτο?
And when we had sailed slowly for many days and had barely arrived opposite Cnidus, for the wind was hindering us, we sailed to Crete, near Salmone.7 βραδυπλοουντες δε ικανας ημερας και μολις φθασαντες εις την Κνιδον, επειδη δεν μας αφινεν ο ανεμος, υπεπλευσαμεν την Κρητην κατα την Σαλμωνην,
And barely being able to sail past it, we arrived at a certain place, which is called Good Shelter, next to which was the city of Lasea.8 και μολις παραπλευσαντες αυτην, ηλθομεν εις τοπον τινα ονομαζομενον Καλους Λιμενας, πλησιον του οποιου ητο η πολις Λασαια.
Then, after much time had passed, and since sailing would no longer be prudent because the Fast Day had now passed, Paul consoled them,9 Επειδη δε παρηλθεν ικανος καιρος και ο πλους ητο ηδη επικινδυνος, διοτι και η νηστεια ειχεν ηδη παρελθει, συνεβουλευεν ο Παυλος,
and he said to them: “Men, I perceive that the voyage is now in danger of injury and much damage, not only to the cargo and the ship, but also to our own lives.”10 λεγων προς αυτους?
But the centurion put more trust in the captain and the navigator of the ship, than in the things being said by Paul.11 Αλλ' ο εκατονταρχος επειθετο μαλλον εις τον κυβερνητην και εις τον ναυκληρον παρα εις τα υπο του Παυλου λεγομενα.
And since it was not a fitting port in which to winter, the majority opinion was to sail from there, so that somehow they might be able to arrive at Phoenicia, in order to winter there, at a port of Crete, which looks out toward the southwest and northwest.12 Και επειδη ο λιμην δεν ητο επιτηδειος εις παραχειμασιαν, οι πλειοτεροι εγνωμοδοτησαν να σηκωθωσι και εκειθεν, ωστε φθασαντες αν ηδυναντο εις Φοινικα, λιμενα της Κρητης βλεποντα προς τον λιβα ανεμον και προς τον χωρον, να παραχειμασωσιν εκει.
And since the south wind was blowing gently, they thought that they might reach their goal. And after they had set out from Asson, they weighed anchor at Crete.13 Και οτε επνευσεν ολιγον νοτος, νομισαντες οτι επετυχον του σκοπου, ανεσυραν την αγκυραν και παρεπλεον πλησιον την Κρητην.
But not long afterward, a violent wind came against them, which is called the Northeast Wind.14 Πλην μετ' ολιγον προσεβαλε κατ' αυτης ανεμος τυφωνικος ο λεγομενος Ευροκλυδων.
And once the ship had been caught in it and was not able to strive against the wind, giving over the ship to the winds, we were driven along.15 Και επειδη το πλοιον συνηρπασθη και δεν ηδυνατο να αντεχη προς τον ανεμον, αφεθεντες εφερομεθα.
Then, being forced along a certain island, which is called the Tail, we were barely able to hold on to the ship’s lifeboat.16 Και τρεξαντες υπο νησιδιον τι ονομαζομενον Κλαυδην, μολις ηδυνηθημεν να βαλωμεν εις την εξουσιαν μας την λεμβον,
When this was taken up, they used it to assist in securing the ship. For they were afraid that they might run aground. And having lowered the sails, they were being driven along in this way.17 την οποιαν αφου ανελαβον μετεχειριζοντο βοηθηματα, ζωνοντες υποκατωθεν το πλοιον?
Then, since we were being tossed about strongly by the tempest, on the following day, they threw the heavy items overboard.18 Και επειδη εχειμαζομεθα σφοδρως, την ακολουθον ημεραν εκαμνον χυσιν,
And on the third day, with their own hands, they threw the equipment of the ship overboard.19 και την τριτην με τας ιδιας ημων χειρας ερριψαμεν τα σκευη του πλοιου?
Then, when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no end to the storm was imminent, all hope for our safety was now taken away.20 και επειδη δια πολλων ημερων δεν εφαινοντο ουτε ηλιος ουτε αστρα, και χειμων βαρυς επεκειτο, πασα ελπις σωτηριας αφηρειτο πλεον αφ' ημων.
And after they had fasted for a long time, Paul, standing in their midst, said: “Certainly, men, you should have listened to me and not set out from Crete, so as to cause this injury and loss.21 Μετα δε πολυημερον ασιτιαν σταθεις ο Παυλος εν τω μεσω αυτων, ειπεν? Επρεπεν, ω ανδρες, να μου υπακουσητε και να μη σηκωθητε απο της Κρητης και ουτως ηθελομεν αποφυγει την κακοπαθειαν ταυτην και την ζημιαν.
And now, let me persuade you to be courageous in soul. For there shall be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.22 Αλλα και ηδη σας παραινω να εχητε θαρρος?
For an Angel of God, who is assigned to me and whom I serve, stood beside me this night,23 Διοτι την νυκτα ταυτην εφανη εις εμε αγγελος του Θεου, του οποιου ειμαι, τον οποιον και λατρευω,
saying: ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! It is necessary for you to stand before Caesar. And behold, God has given to you all those who are sailing with you.’24 λεγων?
Because of this, men, be courageous in soul. For I trust God that this will happen in the same way that it has been told to me.25 Δια τουτο θαρρειτε, ανδρες?
But it is necessary for us to arrive at a certain island.”26 Πρεπει δε να πεσωμεν εις νησον τινα.
Then, after the fourteenth night arrived, as we were navigating in the sea of Adria, about the middle of the night, the sailors believed that they saw some portion of the land.27 Οτε δε ηλθεν η δεκατη τεταρτη νυξ, ενω παρεφερομεθα εν τη Αδριατικη θαλασση, περι το μεσον της νυκτος εσυμπεραινον οι ναυται οτι πλησιαζουσιν εις τοπον τινα.
And upon dropping a weight, they found a depth of twenty paces. And some distance from there, they found a depth of fifteen paces.28 Και ριψαντες την βολιδα ευρον εικοσι οργυιας, και αφου επροχωρησαν ολιγον διαστημα, ριψαντες και παλιν την βολιδα ευρον οργυιας δεκαπεντε?
Then, fearing that we might happen upon rough places, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and they were hoping for daylight to arrive soon.29 και φοβουμενοι μηπως πεσωμεν εξω εις τραχεις τοπους, ριψαντες τεσσαρας αγκυρας απο της πρυμνης, ηυχοντο να γεινη ημερα.
Yet truly, the sailors were seeking a way to flee from the ship, for they had lowered a lifeboat into the sea, on the pretext that they were attempting to cast anchors from the bow of the ship.30 Επειδη δε οι ναυται εζητουν να φυγωσιν εκ του πλοιου και κατεβιβασαν την λεμβον εις την θαλασσαν, επι προφασει οτι εμελλον να εκτεινωσιν αγκυρας εκ της πρωρας,
So Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you will not be able to be saved.”31 ο Παυλος ειπε προς τον εκατονταρχον και προς τους στρατιωτας?
Then the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat, and they allowed it to fall.32 Τοτε οι στρατιωται απεκοψαν τα σχοινια της λεμβου και αφηκαν αυτην να πεση εξω.
And when it began to be light, Paul requested that they all take food, saying: “This is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting and continuing to fast, taking nothing.33 Εως δε να εξημερωση, ο Παυλος παρεκαλει παντας να λαβωσι τροφην τινα, λεγων? Δεκατεσσαρας ημερας σημερον προσδοκωντες διαμενετε νηστικοι, και δεν εφαγετε ουδεν.
For this reason, I beg you to accept food for the sake of your health. For not a hair from the head of any of you shall perish.”34 Δια τουτο σας παρακαλω να λαβητε τροφην?
And when he had said these things, taking bread, he gave thanks to God in the sight of them all. And when he had broken it, he began to eat.35 Αφου δε ειπε ταυτα και ελαβεν αρτον, ευχαριστησε τον Θεον ενωπιον παντων και κοψας ηρχισε να τρωγη.
Then they all became more peaceful in soul. And they also took food.36 Λαβοντες δε παντες θαρρος, ελαβον και αυτοι τροφην?
Truly, we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship.37 ημεθα δε εν τω πλοιω ψυχαι ολαι διακοσιαι εβδομηκοντα εξ.
And having been nourished with food, they lightened the ship, casting the wheat into the sea.38 Αφου δε εχορτασθησαν απο τροφης ελαφρυνον το πλοιον, ριπτοντες τον σιτον εις την θαλασσαν.
And when day had arrived, they did not recognize the landscape. Yet truly, they caught sight of a certain narrow inlet having a shore, into which they thought it might be possible to force the ship.39 Και οτε εγεινεν ημερα, δεν εγνωριζον την γην, παρετηρουν ομως κολπον τινα εχοντα αιγιαλον, εις τον οποιον εβουλευθησαν, αν ηδυναντο, να εξωσωσι το πλοιον.
And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves to the sea, at the same time loosing the restraints of the rudders. And so, raising the mainsail to the gusting wind, they pressed on toward the shore.40 Και κοψαντες τας αγκυρας, αφηκαν το πλοιον εις την θαλασσαν, λυσαντες ενταυτω τους δεσμους των πηδαλιων, και υψωσαντες τον αρτεμονα προς τον ανεμον, κατηυθυνοντο εις τον αιγιαλον.
And when we happened upon a place open to two seas, they ran the ship aground. And indeed, the bow, being immobilized, remained fixed, but truly the stern was broken by the violence of the sea.41 Περιπεσοντες δε εις τοπον, οπου συνηρχοντο δυο θαλασσαι, ερριψαν εξω το πλοιον, και η μεν πρωρα εκαθησε και εμεινεν ασαλευτος, η δε πρυμνη διελυετο υπο της βιας των κυματων.
Then the soldiers were in agreement that they should kill the prisoners, lest anyone, after escaping by swimming, might flee.42 Εβουλευθησαν δε οι στρατιωται να θανατωσωσι τους δεσμιους, δια να μη φυγη μηδεις κολυμβησας.
But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, prohibited it from being done. And he ordered those who were able to swim to jump in first, and to escape, and to get to the land.43 Αλλ' ο εκατονταρχος, θελων να διασωση τον Παυλον, εμποδισεν αυτους απο του σκοπου και προσεταξεν, οσοι ηδυναντο να κολυμβωσι να ριφθωσι πρωτοι και να εκβωσιν εις την γην,
And as for the others, some they carried on boards, and others on those things that belonged to the ship. And so it happened that every soul escaped to the land.44 οι δε λοιποι αλλοι μεν επι σανιδων, αλλοι δε επι τινων λειψανων του πλοιου, και ουτω διεσωθησαν παντες εις την γην.
